Continuing A Tale of Two Hygienist's series on ergonomics, Michelle and Andrew had the opportunity to speak with a guest whose company plays a significant role in making magnification both easy and comfortable for dental hygienists.

Brent Downs is the director of sales for Q-Optics, which specializes in the design and production of through-the-lens (TTL) and flip-up loupes used by dental professionals to magnify the teeth they work diligently on. He's proud that Q-Optics' products have opened so many dental hygienists' eyes (ha) to the benefits of ergonomic loupes.

In this episode, Brent discusses the process used to find the right loupes for a dental hygienist, delves into the potential effects of loupes on their wearers' eyesight, and explains what makes Q-Optics' devices stand out.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

    Interview starts: 14:25

    - Brent discusses his journey working with optics and how Q-Optics has helped to create so many "magnification junkies."

    - Looking back through the history of loupes and how they came to be a key aspect of dentistry and dental hygiene.

    - Want to know how Brent and his team fit their clients for loupes? Check out Andrew's own experience at https://www.ataleoftwohygienists.com/atoth-library/andrew-gets-fitted-for-loupes-video/

    - Brent debunks wide-ranging myths about loupe usage and its effect on eyesight.

    - How are bright lights in loupes affecting their wearers in the long term?

    - The "collective freak-out" over the potential effects of blue light.

    QUOTES:

"We want to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem."

"Let's get the information that we need, but let's make it as simple and bulletproof as possible."

"The beauty behind competition is it forces me to [lead] a better company."

"We are certainly not in the business of blinding people."

234 Student Focused Presents: Ergonomics For A Long And Healthy Dental Career! Jul 01, 2020
    Show notes

    Please Leave a Review!

It's A Tale of Two Hygienists' monthly student roundtable episode, which means Andrew and Michelle have invited a quartet of guests to educate student listeners on a chosen topic. This month's student roundtable introduces ATotH's new series for July: ergonomics.

Emily Boge, RDH, is the dental administrative chair at Hawkeye Community College and also serves as the program chairs for dental assisting and dental hygiene. Lancette Van Guilder has practiced dental hygiene for a quarter of a century and currently splits her time between private practice and working as a continuing education speaker, including courses on ergonomics. She's part of a "power team" with her husband, Ward, a physical therapist who specializes in occupational health and wellness.

In this episode, our guests discuss the essentials of posture, examine a study on impact of poor posture, and explain what you can do to feel as hale and hearty 20 years down the road as you are now.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

    Interview starts: 3:38

    - Lancette and Ward discuss an article on the long term effects of poor posture on muscle imbalances among dental hygienists.

    - The "cone of stability" and how sitting and standing have different effects on your body.

    - Why even veteran hygienists can benefit from having a student shadow them for a little while.

    - Emily expresses her concern about the lack of consistency in teaching ergonomics among hygiene schools.

    - The importance of resting your feet on the ground and not on the chair legs when sitting down.

    QUOTES:

"The goal of ergonomic training and education is [a] neutral working position."

"The vast majority of dental hygienists do not work in a neutral position."

"If I have one thing to say to the students that are listening, it's that you need to advocate to the people who make the decisions."

"It is a lot harder to unteach a bad habit than it is to learn it the right way."

233 Connecting Oral Pathogens with Systemic Conditions: Understanding the Oral Systemic Connection with Kathryn Gilliam, RDH Jun 24, 2020
    Show notes

    Please Leave a Review!

We've come to it: the last entry in perio series. Before A Tale of Two Hygienists waves goodbye—however briefly—to Michelle's favorite topic, we have one final interview with more detail than you can wind an entire spool of (not as effective as you think) dental floss around.

Kathryn Gilliam has been practicing dental hygiene for over three decades and is the founder and owner of PerioLinks, which offers specialized coaching programs to oral healthcare professionals (and who previously appeared on episode #221!). She preaches the importance of focusing on the whole patient, not just seeing them as "a set of teeth and gums."

In this episode, Kathryn explains why it's not simply enough for patients to swish around some mouthwash, breaks down the keystone pathogen hypothesis, and gives you all the juicy details on every little bacterium.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

    Interview starts: 12:00

    - What's Kathryn's favorite perio topic to discuss?

    - How personal tragedy led Kathryn on the personal and professional journey to where she is now.

    - Why it's actually dangerous that periodontal disease is mostly painless.

    - How even bleeding gums fit into a much larger medical picture that patients should be concerned about.

    - The luxury afforded to dental hygienists that other healthcare practitioners don't have.

    - Looking at the array of technology used to diagnose and treat periodontal issues.

    - Kathryn lays out her comprehensive protocol for dealing with periodontitis in the average patient.

    QUOTES:

"I love to use technology in order to better serve our patients."

"There's so much clinical, practical information within the research if we just seek it out and seek to understand."

"It makes such a difference for people to see the bacteria."

"There are just so many things beyond scaling teeth and talking to patients about flossing. We're so far beyond that."

"Everything opens up when you learn how to use this technology."

"If your mouth is inflamed, your body is inflamed."

231 Periodontal Disease: AAP Periodontal Classification And Patient Education With Katrina Sanders, RDH Jun 10, 2020
    Show notes

Please Leave a Review! It's a new month, which means that A Tale of Two Hygienists is embarking on a new series. This time around, Michelle is indulging in her favorite interest—periodontal disease—and has invited someone who can easily walk you through every step of periodontitis.

Katrina Sanders, aka the "Dental Winegenist," has been a dental hygienist for over ten years and is actually a level 1 sommelier! Katrina is based in Phoenix, AZ and works for AZPerio, the largest periodontal practice in the United States. She is also an educator, consultant and speaker.

In this episode, Katrina goes over and demystifies new periodontal terminology and classifications, reveals where you can build true value in your clinical work, and explains why you should really think about what you say when educating patients on periodontal issues.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

    Interview starts: 14:53

    - Katrina explains the importance of visually demonstrating to audiences and patients how periodontal disease can affect a person's oral health.

    - Michelle and Katrina reflect on how long it used to take to get licenced for anything.

    - The eye-opening moment that woke Katrina up to a long-standing issue with how hygienists discuss—or rather, DON'T discuss—periodontal issues with their patients.

    - Why how you say something can matter even more than what you say when bringing up periodontal concerns to apprehensive patients.

    - Katrina guides us through a very detailed tour of the stages of periodontal disease.

    - What are the best tools for identifying the early stages of periodontitis?

    QUOTES:

"This is our opportunity to rebrand dentistry."

"I love socializing with my patients, but there's a time and a place for that socialization."

"If there's more debris than we can manage in that small chunk of time we have to actually scale, let's appropriately diagnose that case."

"Patients need to know the 'why'."
