    You’re Making It Worse

Although performing stand-up comedy was what initially united Eliot, Brent, and H. Alan over 10 years ago, it’s their openness (and sense of humor) about feeling totally lost and disconnected from the gay community that’s truly bonded them. On YMIW, Eliot, Brent and H. Alan get down and dirty, exploring the good, bad, and ugly tropes of contemporary gay life, often the stuff that no one — especially straight people — discuss for fear of being labeled homophobic. (Don’t worry. They’ll do that for you.) Each episode features a special guest -- comedians, humorists, musicians, influencers, film/TV writers, journalists, politicians, etc. – as well as allies, enemies, and acquaintances from all backgrounds and professions, not just those in the public eye. And as white, urban-dwelling gay dudes in their thirties, Eliot, Brent and H. Alan check their own privilege at the door, eager to instead explore what life looks for those not afforded the same concessions.

    Meatball Feb 27, 2020
    Show notes

We love drag queen Meatball SO much! She'll make you laugh, she'll make you cry, and then she'll make you laugh again, louder this time. Whether you know her from Dragula or her podcast Sloppy Seconds (with friend of pod Big Dipper), Meatball will always leave you coming back for seconds. After queer activist Adam Eli used Instagram to publicly reflect on what it REALLY means to have "a type," the guys ask themselves the same question: how much of what we're "into" is dictated by others, and how much of it is allegedly biological? And Brent, Eliot and H. Alan discuss yet ANOTHER Trumpian policy trying to dismantle the work of LGBTQ military after an unsuccessful attempt to discharge two airmen who were both undetectable and in perfect health. And get this: NO BONE SPURS!

But when it comes to queer allies, what are the names you never saw coming? From Garth Brooks and Marlon Wayans to Meghan McCain and Laura Bush, the guys welcome the warm embrace of unexpected allies.

Then, the guys evaluate Pete Buttigieg's choice to cancel last minute on a campaign stop at a gay bar after they refused to take the stripper pole. Finally, Brent ALMOST passes out when he, Eliot and H. Alan fondly recall the first time they learned about buttsex. Plus, find out which host, as a teenager, used to insist on getting his Playgirls gift-wrapped by bookstore employees!

And with Utah finally banning conversion therapy in an effort to protect queer kids, ex-Mormon H. Alan breaks down the REAL real of the situation ...and, sorry, it's a bummer. Finally, find out who the guys consulted for all things gay when they came out of the closet. (Incidentally, never read the book "Coming Out" unless you want to RUIN YOUR LIFE!)

And after Daniel Foote, the Ambassador to Zambia, expressed disgust when the country threw a gay couple in jail for 15 years, would you believe that the Trump administration canned HIM? Finally, Brent asks about "gay rights flashbacks," the moments where you can clearly remember when you felt unequal, before Queer Eye, before Obama, and before Patrick Duffy went into full-blown gay panic on Step by Step.
