Everything You Need to Know Before Getting Started With PR

Want to know how to get started with PR from an expert? In this episode of Enlightened Entrepreneur Podcast, a former journalist turned PR expert reveals the basic do’s and don’ts of Public Relations. Alison considers herself as an excellent storyteller who specializes in media training and crisis communication.

    KEY QUESTIONS ASKED:

    • Who is Alison?
    • What criteria does she use to identify the people to work with?
    • How does Alison market her business in such a noisy environment?
    • What are the misconceptions around PR?
    • What issues with crisis plans do business owners need to know about?
    • What are some of the biggest mistakes Alison sees when it comes to PR?
    • If somebody is looking to get started with PR, what necessary skills or the very first thing they need to do?
    • Why is it so important to get started small?
    • What is the perfect mindset a business owner should have about PR?
    • For business owners who are looking to employ the service of a PR agency, what criteria should they use in identifying who to go with?
    • What are Alison’s thoughts about giving to the community?

    HIGHLIGHTS OF LESSONS LEARNED:

Criteria for People to Work With

    • Find somebody that you can relate to that you admire
    • If you can help somebody avoid doing the mistakes you’ve committed and give them some guidance, it will make you feel good knowing you’re helping someone.

    Marketing Business in Today’s World

    • Alison never advertises and rarely go to networking events.
    • What she does is she writes a lot of content, video blogs and speaks at a lot of conferences.
    • Alison provides as much value and information to people looking for help in PR by putting articles out, doing video blogs, and putting it out on Linkedin and other social media such as Facebook.
    • By putting information out, people see her as an expert. Providing value is an effective way to get business.

    PR Misconceptions

    • A lot of times people say any press is good press. Yes, you want to press, but you never want negative press. It’s really hard to control the message the media will send out.
    • Another misconception is that people think that a public relations expert can control what the media says. When PR experts work with reporters, they can’t give them questions, they can’t tell them how to write the story. What they could do is guide the reporters in the way they want the story to come out.

    Crisis Plan

    • Everybody should have a crisis plan, especially now with social media, if you have a negative review, you need to know how to respond to it: what to do and what not to do.
    • If you have a crisis plan at the beginning of your business, you won’t be reacting but you are in control of the whole thing and your team will know exactly what needs to happen

    Biggest PR Mistakes

    • One of the things is that a lot of business owners don’t understand is the timeliness of the media.
    • A lot of times, it’s not all about them it’s not all about the company they’re just going to be a part of a story and so while the media may be here for 20 minutes they may only use 10 seconds of your interview, and that’s okay what's more important is that you are a part of the story. When you establish yourself as an expert the media will call you time and time again about the industry. The media really wants to tell a story they don’t want to advertise you and talk all about you.

    Starting Out With PR

    • Start small and start establishing relationships with local journalists. Follow them on social media, start sharing their stories and content and email them. Start forming relationships with the local press and follow news trends in your industry.
    • Start small, start paying attention to things that are going on in your industry, establish a relationship with the local media and do some research about how to pitch yourself to the media.

Episode #97: 3 Human Resources Mistakes Every Business Owner Needs to Avoid – An Interview with Jacqui Mann Feb 04, 2021
    Show notes

3 Human Resources Mistakes Every Business Owner Needs to Avoid - An Interview with Jacqui Mann What is HR outsourcing? What does it entail and what benefits can your business expect?

In this interview, Jacqui Mann offers important

insights about modern HR practices and the mistakes that start-up business

owners often make involving human resources.

Jacqui Mann is a Founder of J Mann Associates, and

known as the P.E.O.P.L.E. ™Doctor. She works directly with forward-thinking

entrepreneurial business owners to define and embed a company culture that

    delivers results.

    Common HR Mistakes:

Mistake #1: Hiring the wrong person

The main problem that business owners tend to have

is not being able to recruit the right people. Because they think nobody can do

the job like they can, they’re looking for someone like themselves.

Don’t take someone if they’re not the right person.

You need to wait. And that could be really hard if you’re desperate for someone

to help you but it will only cause you more problem if you take the wrong

    person.

Mistake #2: Don’t have a process in place to help

    with recruitment

How to let go of the wrong person:

If they’ve been with the business less than two

years, it’s much easier. If they’ve been with you for more than need a

    termination agreement.

    Mistake #3: Payment Misconceptions

You don’t always need to think you have to pay

people lots of money to get the right person. If you get someone who believes

in your values, then money isn’t always their motivator. In fact, majority of

people are not motivated by money alone. They’re motivated more by purpose and

their fulfilment in what they’re doing in their work. People want to work

for you if you’ve got really good values.

How to Avoid Recruiting the Wrong Person:

    Establish Business Values

You need to understand what your purpose is for the

business, which also includes understanding what your values are. Every single

thing you do in the business revolves around the purpose and the values of that

    company.

Once you know your company values, you then create

all your assistants and processes around those values and then when you recruit

someone, you recruit using your values so you would ask questions based around

on that. That way you’ll know if they are a fit in your business.

If there’s a conflict with the values, if your

applicant’s personal values conflict with the business values, the relationship

is simply not going to work.

    Know your Purpose

As the leader of the organization, you need to

understand your purpose and need to inspire employees. They want the

leadership, they want to know where the business is going, they need to

understand how their particular role fits into it in terms of progression. They

should have ownership of what they do.

    Outsource Your HR

If you’re serious about growing your business, then

outsource the HR, don’t try to do it yourself.

Before you do, make sure you’ve got a good

employment contract in place, and you’ve got some policies and processes and

systems that link into your values right from the beginning,

You want to be able to have a culture that’s going

to become an asset and a culture that will live on when you’re not there.

    Have the Right Mindset

You really need to be thinking what is the real

purpose of our business. What do you want to be doing and how are you going to

achieve that? Be prepared to explore outside your comfort zone.

Episode #95: Danny Lyon | Networking and Why It’s Not Working Out For You Feb 04, 2021
    Show notes

Let’s Talk About Networking and Why It’s Not Working Out For You Success with networking starts with the right mindset, have you got the right attitude and skills to establish yourself in your community? Danny Lyon, a successful entrepreneur and networking expert, talks with Enlightened Entrepreneur Podcast host Yeukai Kajidori about the secrets to networking and some common mistakes every business owner needs to be aware of. Key Questions Asked

What is involved in networking? What roadblocks did

Dan face when getting started? How did Dan get his initial client and what are

some of the lessons he’s learned from the people he was able to help over the

last 18 years? How does Danny market his business or himself? What is the

number one mistake people do when networking? Why is this mistake detrimental

to anyone’s success when it comes to networking? What other major mistake does

Dan see that business owners are doing which they can avoid? What is the right

mindset for people who are going to business events?

    Highlights of Lessons Learned:

    Key to Networking

There is a high failure rate of small businesses and

the reason for this is because they think that they know what they’re doing and

they think that they have to do it by themselves. One of the great aspects

of networking is the fact that you don’t know everything and that there are

people out there everywhere that want to help you.

    Overcoming Roadblocks

Biggest roadblocks most start-up’s use is either

disbelief, non-awareness, or non-admittance that your business is exactly how

    you create it.

The moment you learn to take credit for both the

good and the bad, you will position yourself as a leader, which other people

    will look up to.

    Secret to Getting Clients

Any business that is focused on money is set up for

trouble. When a business is focused on extraordinary customer experience, it’s

set up for success. Because it is the customer that has all the money. So

just get off of money and get on to customers, the money comes by itself.

    Biggest Mistake in Networking

The number one mistake people often commit when

networking is, they think “It’s about me,” so when they come to a networking

event or join a networking group, they’re focused on themselves what they are

going to get. This is much like closing all the doors at once.

The best way to focus on the customer experience is

to learn to be a giver first.

We like to think that we’re interesting people and

the way that we think that were interesting is by telling other people how

interesting we are, when in fact the more that we get interested in another

person, the more interesting we can become as we get into their world.

Another mistake people usually commit is that they

are not open to trying new things.

Episode #102: Barbara Werner | Start-up Ideas For Long Term Success Jan 03, 2020
    Show notes

In this episode of Enlightened Entrepreneur Podcast, musical pairing expert Barbara Werner shares how her unique idea for business was conceived, how she worked on that idea from the initial stage up to the point when she was finally able to take it into the market and present it as a full-blown product, which, especially in the case of her business, people have received overwhelmingly well.

    Key Questions Asked:

What is Barbara’s background and how she got started in business? How did she come up with the idea of musical pairing and what is that all about? What roadblocks did Barbara face during the development stages of her business? What was the role of mentors in Barbara’s business? How does Barbara go about reaching out to mentors? If he was to start all over again with getting an idea and putting it out in today’s world, what would you see differently? What would she do more of to speed the process? Where should business owners focus their attention to if they want to succeed in both short term and long term with their business? How does Barbara manage her time?

    Highlights of Lessons Learned:

    You and Your Business

As a start-up business owner, you must rely on your experiences and if you don’t have the skill needed in a particular area of your business, the solution is to go out and find an expert in that area. You also have to be aware of your finances, and if you’re not good with money, find an expert who can help you manage it. You have to hire somebody you can trust because trust is such a huge thing when doing business. Mentors are important, and many successful people today are more than willing to help fellow entrepreneurs who are just starting out in the industry.

    Must Remember

One advice Barbara shares with entrepreneurs are to make sure you have an elevator pitch ready, a short synopsis of your business or your product that you can pitch whenever you need to. Barbara had cited the importance of hiring more people sooner, explaining that it would have sped up the growth of her business. When you’re owning a business, you have to constantly be watching and making sure that everyone in your team is doing what they’re supposed to.

    Keys to Success

For short-term success, entrepreneurs must have a very focused financial plan and also expect and be prepared for change. For long-term success, entrepreneurs must constantly change their product, learn about technology and social media, and if you don’t have the time or you don’t really grasp the necessary skills for these changes, then hire people who do. As an entrepreneur, you’ve got to focus on the things that are important to you, especially those that make you happy.

Episode #100: Katy Blevins | Empowering Women and How to Best Achieve Real Success Oct 25, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Enlightened Entrepreneur Podcast, Katy Blevins, together with Yeukai Kajidori, discuss “The Beginner’s Guide for Empowering Women to Design and Achieve their Personal Definition of Success.” As an expert in business consulting, Katy shares some eye-opening details about how women can craft their own success and live the life they’ve always wanted

    Key Questions Asked:

What is Katy’s background and how did it prepare her to be a business owner? What triggered Katy to leave the corporate world and go full time to being an entrepreneur? What are Katy’s reasons for taking on a business when she has got the assurance of money coming in every month with her corporate job? What are the major changes that Katy had to go through during her transition from working in a corporate world into venturing on to the business world? What roadblocks did she face while making that transition? What are the necessary steps that business owners, particularly women, can follow in designing their own life and achieving success? What advice would Katy give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

    Highlights of Lessons Learned:

    The Journey

One key indicator of success and also a source of inspiration for Katy is seeing the people that she serve, help equip and empower, obtaining their own professional and personal dreams. Experiencing roadblocks have made Katy a better business owner because she can relate to her clients more, which adds to the assurance that they can trust her. Katy believes that one effective way to overcome obstacles is by surrounding yourself with people who believe in you and are invested in your personal and professional life. Katy believes in the notion that if whatever you are doing in your life right now is not giving you that sense of joy, and you have some other idea that you think you can put into motion, you need to gather up the courage and take that leap of faith to do whatever you can to make that happen.

    Steps to Success

Designing your life starts with having an honest conversation with yourself and creating a visualized picture of what you want your life or your business to look like. If you do your best to hold true to that visualized picture of success, it simplifies the decision-making process you do for your business and your life every day. As a business owner, it is important that you take advantage of and utilize every opportunity to put a support system in place and delegate where you need to in order to help you move towards success. The biggest step to achieving success is acknowledging that what success looks and feels like to you may not look and feel the same way with others.
