    Show notes

Times are changing and so is the way we do business. Corporate social responsibility is more important than ever, and not just to investors but to customers. More consumers are demanding that companies ditch outdated models for transparency and instead adopt open communication and sustainable practices in a bid to make the world a better place. In fact, 84% of consumers say it is important to them that a company supports charitable causes. Buying into brands that partner with charities is an easy way for consumers to feel like they’re giving back. And an overwhelming number are willing to pay more to know that what they’re spending their money on is actually good for the earth and the people on it. But the question is, can we create an ethical balance between profit and purpose? The short answer is yes and for this episode of WorkParty, our host Jaclyn Johnson sits down with Shiza Shahid who is doing just that with her kitchen and homeware company, Our Place. The co-founder of the Malala Fund is fusing her passion for philanthropy and social impact to build a brand that brings people together around home-cooked meals. Tune in to learn more about why investing from the heart is the key to building profitable businesses and thriving communities where everyone belongs. S8. E. 3 The "Next" Normal: Creating the Workplace After Tomorrow With Stephanie Mehta Nov 04, 2020
    Show notes

    Presented by Mastercard

It’s safe to say 2020 has been a year of firsts. We've endured a pandemic, persevered through quarantine, and pivoted our personal and professional lives to digital as we navigate this unprecedented time. It’s clear that we aren’t returning to “normal” any time soon so the big question is, what does the workplace after tomorrow look like? According to Stephanie Mehta, Editor-in-Chief of Fast Company, as businesses start to reopen, the greatest innovators in design, technology, and workplace leadership are thinking about the “next normal”—a world where flexibility and resilience are the coins of the realm. Stephanie says adhering to this “next normal” mentality will also set leaders up to deal with future pandemics and business interruptions. So, how do we prepare now for what’s next? In this episode of WorkParty, Jaclyn sits down with Stephanie to discuss how the physical footprint of offices and work campuses will change and evolve, the impact of 2020's grand remote work experiment, and how we can best manage hybrid teams of remote and in-person workers. S8. E. 2 Self-Confidence in the Age of Social Media With Nabela Noor Nov 02, 2020
    Show notes

Cultivating self-confidence in the age of social media is not easy. Since the rise of platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, social media has been linked to increased feelings of loneliness, envy, depression, and anxiety. And in a recent survey, 60% of people reported that social media has negatively impacted their self-esteem. Despite these stats, Nabela Noor is using social media to inspire people to love themselves as they are. Since launching her YouTube channel back in 2013, she has amassed nearly 900K subscribers and a staggering 1.4 million Instagram followers. But Nabela is not your average beauty influencer. Since posting her first makeup tutorial to YouTube, she has used her platform to spark a self-love movement, advocate for inclusivity and diversity in the beauty industry, and push the culture forward—which is just one of the many reasons why she’s attracted major partnerships with brands like Elf Cosmetics and OGX. In this episode of WorkParty, Jaclyn sits down with Nabela at our digital Self-Care & Beauty Summit to talk about why representation matters, how she’s wielding her influence for good, and what her hopes are for the future of the beauty industry. S8. E. 1 The Empathy Gap: How Morgan Mercer is Using VR to Improve Workplace Harassment and D&I Training Oct 28, 2020
    Show notes

Presented by Mastercard Fact: 54% of women report workplace harassment. A staggering 64% of women are exposed to gender-based micro aggressions, with non-white women experiencing it more than anyone else. But here’s the kicker, nearly all sexual harassment or discrimination at work goes unreported and those who do, often see zero benefit. If you’ve ever had diversity or anti-harassment training at work, you’ll know that they are long overdue for a shakeup. And these statistics prove their outdated powerpoint and video presentations just aren’t working. Despite mandatory sexual harassment trainings in many states across the U.S., cases of harassment are still on the rise. Morgan Mercer recognized the critical need for education that bridged the empathy gap and she’s doing just that with her immersive enterprise training company, Vantage Point. Morgan’s technology is teaching “soft” skills like kindness and empathy through a live 360-degree virtual reality experience where users watch harassment unfold before them and have to make decisions on how to respond. In this episode of WorkParty, Jaclyn sits down with Morgan to discuss how she’s using technology to transform workplace training, how to drive empathy and fundamentally make the world more human, and what’s in store for the future. S7. E. 6 A Fresh Take: How the Natalie’s Juice Founder & CEO Built a $140M Company on Honest Transparency Oct 26, 2020
    Show notes

It’s hard to remember a time when companies could sell products without an ingredients list, keep their process as a trade secret, and have values based on profit over purpose. Not anymore. Today, transparency rules and consumers are demanding it. Entrepreneurs are being held to a higher standard, now more than ever, but Marygrace Sexton and her daughter, Natalie, are up to the challenge. In fact, honest transparency has been at the core of their business, Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice, before it was a buzzword. Marygrace launched the business in 1989 with $20,000 she saved from a job as a radiologist’s receptionist. Her goal? To compete with the preservative-laced cartons on supermarket shelves. And she did! Natalie’s Juice keeps it simple, which is why there are never more than five ingredients in each juice. Her commitment to uncompromising quality and honest transparency has captured the hearts of consumers too. Sales last year topped $60 million on a volume of 7 million gallons. In this episode of WorkParty, Jaclyn sits down with Marygrace and her daughter Natalie to dive into their authentic mission, how private equity nearly spoiled everything, and why her fresh take on juice has built a $140 million-dollar company. S7. E. 4 The Triple Bottom Line: How Lindsay McCormick Created a Brand That Values Profit, People, and the Planet Equally Oct 14, 2020
    Show notes

Have you ever heard of the triple bottom line? For some of you, this might be a new concept, but for Bite Toothpaste Bits founder and CEO, Lindsay McCormick, it’s been part of her business plan from day one. Businesses that have adopted the TBL framework evaluate their performance based on meeting three main criteria—social, environmental, and financial—to create greater business value. In short, they value profit, people, and the planet equally. Unfortunately it hasn’t always been the standard and a lot of businesses have valued profit over everything else and it’s impacting all of us, but especially the planet. So, how do we ensure this business model is the status quo moving forward so we can all have financially successful businesses while helping others and reducing our footprint in the process? In this episode of WorkParty, we sit down with Lindsay to dive into the TBL framework of her sustainable oral care line and learn more about her mission to eliminate the one billion plastic toothpaste tubes that end up in our landfills and ocean every single year. S7 E. 3 Sense and Sustainability: How to Create a Conscious Beauty Brand From Start to Finish With Each & Every Oct 07, 2020
    Show notes

Sustainability hasn’t exactly been at the forefront of the $532 billion beauty industry. In fact, when it comes to packaging, ingredient sourcing, and distribution, it’s actually responsible for a great deal of waste, and it’s taken a heavy toll on the environment. But thanks to a handful of pioneering indie brands, the tides are changing. And Each & Every is one of them. In addition to using sustainable, clean ingredients—and being cruelty free—reducing product waste has also been central to their brand mission. Over the past year, they have been working on more sustainable options and have developed a multi-step plan towards a more environmentally-friendly product. Their first step in tackling this complex but very important issue is to launch their worry-free recycling program. In this episode of WorkParty, Jaclyn sits down with the Each & Every co-founder, Lauren Lovelady to dive into their eco-friendly mission and the challenges of creating a conscious beauty brand with a sustainable state of mind from start to finish. S7 E. 2 How Fashion Vet Kym Gold Co-Founded, Scaled, and Sold True Religion for $800+ Million Sep 30, 2020
    Show notes

Kym Gold has been a self-starter from the get-go. With a deep-rooted passion for fashion and unwavering determination to succeed, the fashion industry vet was running her first business selling clothing on the Venice Beach boardwalk and around college campuses in her late teens. In her early 20s, Kym and her then-husband set their sights on a whitespace in the male-dominated denim industry: fashion denim. Enter True Religion Jeans, a luxury, locally-made denim line. The brand became an acclaimed leader in the premium denim market and, according to Kym, set the stage for the “Denim Fridays” office movement. The brand achieved mass popularity (keep in mind, this was the pre-social media and e-commerce era of fashion) and went on to sell the company for over $800 million in 2013. Now, she’s shifted gears to home decor with a line of high-quality ceramics that she fires in the kiln in her Malibu home. In this episode of WorkParty, we sit down with the entrepreneurial powerhouse to learn how she found her place in a male-dominated industry, built a multi-million dollar denim empire, and pivoted to a new career. S7 E. 1 From Seed to Sale: How Equilibria Found Whitespace in the Competitive $20 Billion CBD Market Sep 23, 2020
    Show notes

It’s safe to say there is a lot of buzz around CBD and it’s easy to see why. Leading cannabis researchers project that the collective market for CBD sales in the U.S. will surpass $20 billion by 2024. Who wouldn’t want a slice of that pie? When Coco Meers launched her CBD company, Equilibria, in the spring of 2018 the space was already flooded with thousands of brands. But instead of being discouraged by the competition, Coco and her co-founder, Marcy Capron Vermillion were driven by it. The duo also didn’t view the current brands as competitors. Most of them were not seed-to-sale or medical-grade and it was clear the market was ripe for transparency and results-driven formulas. They quickly got to work on filling the whitespace. But Equilibria is so much more than just a premium, farm-fresh, full-spectrum CBD product line. The co-founders went one step further by offering personalized medical-grade CBD routines and dedicated one-on-one dosage support with a specialist—they’re the only CBD brand to offer that service. As a “for women, by women” company, they understand that female bodies are different—from cyclical changes to the very real challenges of menopause, childbirth, and everything in-between—and women deserve a CBD brand that can deliver all of the above. In this episode of WorkParty, Jaclyn sits down with Coco to dive Equilibria's seed to sale concept, why we should all believe the hype around CBD, and how they’ve built trust in an unregulated industry.
