August 13, 2020 Another Equal Pay Day, It gives me anxiety... Did you know that today is #BlackWomenEqualPayDay? Black Women’s Equal Pay Day is the approximate day a Black woman must work into the new year to make what white non-Hispanic man-made at the end of the previous year. My life's mission is to close the gap in wages and leadership. As a black woman, I know far too well the struggle and I know the joy of achievement. It is my intention that more of us experience #WinningSeason as I continue daily to move the needle in closing the gender wage gap I've put together a pdf guide and made my best-selling book available for a limited time. https://lnkd.in/ewe-hW2 #leadership #diversity

THE PRICE OF PROCRASTINATION This is a very special episode of “The Winning Season” recorded by Jacqueline V. Twillie, host of the #WinningSeason Podcast for the private FB Community.

In this episode, our host stresses on how expensive the price of procrastination could be, and how, by the learnings from this podcast, one could fruitfully deal with it.

She tells us there are 3 areas where procrastination can hit on our lives and how they could strongly affect our productivity. The cost of procrastination as mentioned are:

    1. Missed opportunities (10:10)

    2. Finances (08:58)

    3. Health and Personal well-being (13:04) Procrastination keeps you stuck at a place, perhaps by making you feel that even the other people around you aren’t doing anything. It is also important to know how to negotiate for your finances as and when needed. By procrastinating on how the outcome would have been, if you had negotiated, you’re keeping yourself stuck in your thoughts.

The host describes 3 worthwhile elements that would help you move past procrastination, having garnered sufficient experience helping others who’ve had to deal with the same.

These are 1. Eliminating excuses (18:15)

    2. Getting yourself a partner /coach (20:45)

    3. Rewarding good behavior (23:45) By being honest to yourself and having a level of self-awareness, you can very efficiently develop the ability to get win-win outcomes.

Getting a partner can help you stay accountable to yourself, could help pick you up when you laze around. Citing a famous quote by Zig Ziglar, which explains that you’re not always going to be motivated, Jaqueline tells us how a coach could help you stay on track. What distinguishes successful and unsuccessful people is that successful people do the things they need to do even when they do not feel like doing it, while unsuccessful people tend to brood over their lack of motivation. It is also very important to reward yourself for your success. The rewards need not be extravagant or expensive. Do anything which makes you happy!

Giving homework toward the close of the session, our host asks you to jot down the list of excuses you’ve been telling yourself all this time. Self-awareness could help you get out of it. “Level up! Do something to invest in yourself today!”

“No More Secret Allies” with Jodi-Ann Burey Jul 27, 2020
    Show notes

Jodi-Ann Burey is a speaker, writer, and equity advocate. Her work is grounded in centering the experiences of historically underrepresented communities and the systematic intersectional approaches needed to address inequities. She is currently working on her first book and podcast called Black Cancer, which explores the stories about women of color and healthcare.

“No More Secret Allies” Piece on LinkedIn - No More Secret Allies is a powerful piece Jodi Ann wrote on her LinkedIn Profile. She used this platform to express the accurate reflection of what she was feeling about people who are “secret allies” of the Racism Culture black folks have long endured. People who she calls “secret allies” are those who want to be allies with her but aren’t really part of the system. They are those people who are not willing to risk professional careers, losing relationships to fight for what they say they value. - She doesn’t need anger. She needs action. No More Secret Allies. Racism is a public health issue - Research studies show that the medical community think and feel that black people don’t feel pain or have high level of tolerance. Recalling Jodi Ann’s cancer journey, it took 3 years for her to get diagnosed, going in and out of doctors’ offices and convincing them that the pain that she was feeling was real. It was only after 3 years that she was told that she has a tumor in the spinal cord and that she needs surgery to be taken it out. - People create environments that make black people sick. Not because genetically black people are sick, they put factories to pollute the air in black and brown communities. There's a system that creates sickness in black people, not just environmentally, but also even in our offices. - Chronic racial stress that damages you physiologically that impacts what is actually physically happening in your body. Eradicating the Racism Issue - A whole system that needs to shift. We need to have a racial equity lens on all the decisions that we make that impact people of color. - The biggest work is for leaders and decision-makers who decide things around where businesses go, different policies around the environment should look at things through a racial equity lens. - Advocate for yourself and look for people who will advocate for you. Do research because that’s how you are going to advance as an individual in this system. Upcoming Book: Black Cancer - The book, Black Cancer talks about her journey of depression from heartbreak and how her cancer diagnosis saved her from that because it gave her something to fight for to want to live. - The book also talks about what it means to seek help. When you are a black woman, society and even you perceive yourself as strong. So how do strong people ask for help? How do strong people get help? Do you know how to help strong people? The book, Black Cancer will disrupt this idea of strong as something that protects you. Being strong is something that can also put you at risk because maybe you're not aware of when you need help. Podcast: Black Cancer - Guests invited are cancer survivors, people who are currently going through treatment, caregivers of family members who had their cancer journey, and those who lost loved ones due to cancer.

Rochelle Porter on Winning Season Jun 29, 2020
    Show notes

Rochelle Porter has never met a blank surface she didn’t want to draw on.

A lifelong lover of global design traditions, the Atlanta-based artist takes cues from the breezy hues of her Caribbean roots, the stark simplicity of Scandinavian design and the bold geometrics of West African weaves to create vibrant, eye-catching textiles for the home décor and apparel markets. Her travel-inspired patterns feature joyful, unexpected burst of color and classic motifs with a fresh, modern twist.

Upon learning of the unethical and environmentally hazardous labor practices of today’s globalized “fast fashion” industry, Rochelle nearly abandoned her dream of becoming a designer. That is, until she figured out that style could also be sustainable.

Combining her passion for patterns with her commitment to social responsibility, she formed Rochelle Porter Design (RPD), a lifestyle brand specializing in thoughtfully made, eco-friendly home and fashion accessories.

True to its tagline, “Design for abundant living,” the company believes everyone along the value chain should have the chance to live well—from the farmer who picks the pesticide-free organic cotton for its textiles, to the customer who puts them on her sofa.

RPD prioritizes fair pay, environmentally safe manufacturing, and the use of allergy-free organic and recycled materials whenever possible.
