19-Wichita State Football Aug 27, 2021

Show notes

Unfortunately when most people think of the Wichita State football program they associate it with the horrific plane crash that took place in 1970. Albeit probably a contributing factor to the program shutting down, it wasn't until 1986 that the city of Wichita and the university discontinued the program.
Join us as Evan walks us through the long history and the many ups and downs of the Wichita State football program including many firsts in the history of football as a whole. And as always - Go Shox!

17-Joyland Aug 13, 2021

Show notes

We were fortunate enough to sit down with Dalton Sanders and Dustin Ray Shannon - two major Joyland fans who walked us through a historical look at Joyland and what happened that shut it down. Joyland was a major part of the Wichita history in the mid to late 1900s and into the 2000s, and it is missed by many. There is much controversy around both the safety of the park as well as the leadership, which we discuss on the show.
Join us as we go through this roller coaster of ride that is the history of Joyland and it's impact on this great city. It was a beloved theme park that has since been abandoned, but it will live in our hearts forever.
Check out Dalton's page the Humans of Wichita at https://www.facebook.com/officialhumansofwichita.
Dustin wrote a literal book on Joyland and you can find it at dustinrayshannon.com. You can also like the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/WichitaJoyland for all things Joyland.

16-Riverside Zoo Jul 30, 2021

Show notes

If you listen to this podcast, you've probably at some point been to the Sedgwick County Zoo. But do you know the story of the Riverside Zoo that eventually became the zoo we know and love today?
David's cousin-in-law, Stephen, sat down in the Collective Basement and took us through a journey of the original Wichita zoo and the wacky things that happened back in the early 1900s. We might have to make a Wichita Podcast sponsored movie of this story because it is hilarious and unbelievable - and yet all so true.
So join us as we look at the early zoo that shaped the incredible zoo we are all lucky to have in our very own backyard. And while you're at it, go support the Sedgwick County Zoo - let them know the Wichita Podcast sent you. Even though you'll get nothing.

13-Candle Club Jun 25, 2021

Show notes

There is nothing more Wichita than going to the Candle Club at the Prairie Village Center 6135 E 13th St N, Wichita, KS 67208. This members only club has been around since 1960 and has been a staple for many generations of Wichita families over those years.
We sat down with Judah Craig, managing partner of the Candle Club, to hear both his story of how he came to be running the Candle and also its rich history.
The Candle Club is a country club without the golf course - when you walk in you are hit right in the face with a rat pack era feeling. From nightly activities planned by the staff to live music several times a week, the Candle Club is the place to be every night.
If you've never been to the Candle Club, don't fret, because memberships are very affordable and they are always happy to welcome new members to their family. Check out https://candleclubwichita.com/ for all the details on what the Candle Club can offer you.

12-Homesteading in Wichita Jun 18, 2021

Show notes

If you think you can't homestead in the Wichita area, think again! We sat down with THE Mama Marketer aka Olivia Hayse and talked homesteading because her and her husband decided to move to the Wichita area around 3 years ago to do that very thing. We recorded this episode at Hayseed Farm which is where they spend their time raising chickens, ducks, and pigs as well as a huge garden to provide fresh fruit and vegetables. Olivia talked to us all about what it is like to grow and raise your own food and the benefits behind it all.
Olivia also runs her own podcast which David sat in on an episode from Friday Friendsday! They talked all about starting a podcast and going after your dreams. You can find her podcast at: https://themamamarketer.podbean.com/ as well as find her on Instagram: @themamamarketer

Show notes

We were able to meet with Pretend Friend - a local bluegrass band who is unlike any other. With Grant Boesen on guitar and lead vocals, Brody Wellman on bass, and Evan Ogborn on the mandolin this trio has been described as "rockgrass," "new high lonesome," and "if Robert Plant and the Stanley Brothers had a baby."
The guys walked us through how the band was formed, where they came up with the name, and gave us some interesting trivia about their personal lives you will not hear anywhere else. Join us for this extra long episode that was extra fun just for you!
Pretend Friend was also our first ever Wichita Podcast Jam! We are starting a new segment called Wichita Podcast Jams where we are bringing on local bands and musicians to play
intimate jams just for you. Find us on YouTube for all the jams!
