Ask WYE - Issue 53 - Litigiosity: Suing Rescuers for Helping You. Dec 02, 2020
    Show notes

Listener Jeff Sinfield from the great Down Unda' chimes in this week with a question aimed at MC but that HM has some questions about, too.

"Can you be sued personally on the job?" It turns out MC and his pals have a built in legal device called Qualified Immunity that HM is curious to learn more about. He asks:

    • Could the removal of Qualified Immunity increase quality of service?
    • Should Qualified Immunity be used to remove officers for wrongdoing when they apply for new positions?
    • If HM and his Medic pals purchase malpractice insurance, is there a PD product that should be considered?
    • Will taking away Qualified Immunity lead to more deaths?

    Ask WYE - Issue 52 - Board Game Mashup Nov 18, 2020
    Show notes

This week Justin has been thinking about all the board games we play and have around our homes and got the idea in his head to write new rules for Monopoly. And that got him thinking, "If you could mash two games together to make a fun new one? Which would you choose?"

Lucky for him, co-host Jason is also a game nerd and so this week's question is all about shaking up family game night.

After all, with all that's going on, a good game night can relieve a lot that ails us.

Horrible Industry Ideas that Should Never See the Light of Day Nov 11, 2020
    Show notes

Here at WYE Radio, we fancy ourselves experts in our respective fields. Years of advanced education and training on top of decades of public service, pushing the limits, challenging the status quo and striving to make our professions better than we are.

And then comes the Industry. Not the industry like "Oh, cool, electricity and factories" but the companies that prey upon confused (and more than likely a little intoxicated) managers, Chiefs and administrators who suddenly have the solution to a problem the never knew they had. You know the ones...

Just such an industry solution rattled through Justin's feeds this week as THIS DEPARTMENT thought it would be a good idea to purchase what 25-year Fire Service veteran and Paramedic Captain calls "the second dumbest thing I've seen."

What about you? What kind of equipment/tech have you seen around that makes you shake your head and wish you were the one writing the checks?

Post Election Mood Cleansing Shenanigans Nov 04, 2020
    Show notes

In an effort to try to turn a sour election season sweet and a dark week bright, the guys come together to learn about the brilliance, and dim wittedness that is Yahoo Answers as well as trying a few Google auto complete searches about cops and firemen.

We hope this episode finds you in the total bliss of a political win and the realization that, even if your old white guy lost and the world is coming to an end, you can always count on WYE to bring a smile to your face, even if it is over a well placed Andy Garcia joke.

Ask WYE - Issue 51 - How much cross training is too much? Oct 28, 2020
    Show notes

Listener Phil is back with another good question this week about cross training Police Officers as EMTs. We tackled this topic on our old show and discuss it sometimes but this week we get into the specifics about expectations on scene and how much EMT training is too much.

While Police Officers do need tactical intervention training, like bleeding control and CAT use, there isn't much value in them being educated in the ins and outs of vital sign gathering and interpretation, nor clouding their training with medication dosages and documentation.

On the other side of that coin is how much tactical training do EMTs and Medics really need outside forming up a Rescue Task Force? Not that much.

Have a listen and find out what our experts think on this week's ASK WYE!

    In Memoriam - Firefighter/Paramedic Jason Cortez Oct 21, 2020
    Show notes

To honor the memory of San Francisco Firefighter/Paramedic Jason Cortez, we've decided to pre-empt our usual show this week and "go dark" in his memory.

Jason Cortez was a second-generation firefighter for SFFD that died in the line of duty on October 7th, 2020. The final report is still to be released, what we do know is he was knocked from the third floor of the training tower in what appears to be a tragic accident. For more information about Jason and how you can help the two sons that survive him, please go to http://wyeradio.com/cortez.

the social dilemma - Discussing what social media really does to us Oct 14, 2020
    Show notes

This week your experts get together for a live video discussion of what they learned and their thoughts on the Netflix Docu-drama The Social Dilemma.

They discuss the brain's reaction to notifications and our desire to be recognized and appreciated. The filmmakers interview the engineers who were there at the beginning to really get an idea of what the social media landscape was supposed to look like.

The guys go into more detail about:

    • What it's like to be the generation growing with this technology, now wondering how it turned on us
    • As people who are still trying to be active on the socials, how can we limit the Pavlovian response they've created?
    • As parents, is blocking all social media the right thing to do?
    • Is Millie Bobbie Brown the next Natalie Portman?

    Ask WYE - Issue 50 - You've Got Homework Oct 07, 2020
    Show notes

This week's Ask is brief. We're gonna ask you to check out the Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma. Both your hosts have seen it and were deeply intrigued.

We thought it would be an interesting experiment to ask you, our faithful listeners, to check it out and then join us this Saturday, October 10th, at the WYE Facebook page (not at all ironically) to have a conversation about the doc, LIVE.

At what time, you ask? Dammit if you don't ask good questions. We've got five kids between us...we'll be playing it by ear. Likely early afternoon, but we'll update the FB page later in the week and certainly on Saturday.

Temporary Modified WYE - MC is Moving out of Town Sep 30, 2020
    Show notes

You read that right, MC is moving out of town. We've discussed his line of duty back injury for a few weeks but today you'll learn what happens on the administrative side when you're off for more than a few weeks recovering.

Yup, MC is getting kicked out of the Town. The Town he's been serving since you met him, since Justin met him, since he was MC. After 16 some odd years or so, they cut him loose back to the larger agency and now he has no idea where he's going to end up.
