Saying Goodbye to Ted Setla May 19, 2021
    Show notes

This week on What's Your Emergency the emergency is that we just found out a good friend died. The tears of sorrow, the laughter of good memories and the need to sometimes just sit quietly by a friend as they grieve are all topics for this week.

Moving forward though, make sure of the following:

    • Your living will and other documents are on file and good to go
    • Determine a family PIO, someone who can be the gateway to information through good and bad
    • Grieving alone is rarely good, find someone to listen, help...anything
    • Ted only really dies if his ideas die with him

The generosity and kindness shown to our families by Ted Setla is immeasurable. His constant drive to do better, to be better, rubbed off on many and we're proud to include ourselves in that group.

Advice to young first responders from their future selves May 12, 2021
    Show notes

Over the past (wiggle hands and fingers wildly) years we've tried to share as much knowledge as we can about living in the three disciplines of Police, EMS and Fire. We do this by inviting on guests that have inspired us, authors who distract (and inspire) us, heck we even invite people we disagree with to learn more for ourselves.

But imagine, if you can, a young Justin, polishing his boots for his first Volunteer shift in rural New Mexico, or a young Jason, ironing his uniform for his first day on patrol and our older selves had a chance to impart some wisdom.

If you could go back, with everything you now know...what advice would you give younger you?

    • A dose of encouragement?
    • A warning?
    • A nugget of wisdom learned the hard way?
    • Push them down a flight of stairs?

This week the guys talk about what they wish they could tell themselves way back in the day (Which was a Thursday by the way.)

    Blogging Nostalgic May 05, 2021
    Show notes

You likely know by now that your hosts met as public safety bloggers many, many moons ago. What you may not know is why they started and what made them stop.

In this episode, the guys fire up the microphones after listening to part of one of the first Crossover Shows and became nostalgic for everything that was the "new internet." For example, remember when MC had to wear a motor helmet every time he was on camera? Pepperidge Farms Remembers.

    We discuss:

    • Why they chose an online format instead of print
    • The challenges of anonymity
    • Transitioning from blogging to writing for magazines
    • That awkward moment when someone recognizes you in real life as your online alter ego

Live Reaction to the Chauvin Verdict Apr 21, 2021
    Show notes

Unless you're living with your fingers pressed tightly into your ears and screaming at the top of your lungs with your eyes closed, you're aware of the trial of former Police Officer Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd.

Your hosts, with a combined 50 years experience in law enforcement, fire protection and EMS, came together as soon as it was announced a verdict had been reached. While many have made this case purely political, others have tried to make it the greatest case of all time or something to be dismissed.

WYE Radio strives to live in the moment by bringing you our take on important topics, often after we have a moment to talk about whether or not our opinions are of value for the audience. This week all is bare as we react in real time to the verdict being announced on KCBS Radio 740 AM San Francisco.

Don't Ask WYE - Issue 59 - How asking the wrong question can hurt Apr 14, 2021
    Show notes

You know how when you're feeling down and you've experienced a not so great life moment it's irritating to constantly be asked, "You okay?"

We get it. Recently, Justin's eldest had some medical issues (Ask WYE 57) and he's been inundated with queries about how he's handling things. Methinks he's reached his limit.

In this episode we talk about some strategies as a replacement for simply asking, "You okay?"

    You'll learn about:

    • Offering a distraction (we landed on disc golf)
    • Planning an unrelated outing (favorite taphouse, anyone?)
    • Ask about the latest [insert book, movie, show] everyone is discussing
    • Show up with a favorite adult beverage and shoot the proverbial breeze
    • Let 'em know you're there for them without overtly asking their current emotional status

Ask WYE - Issue 58 - ATL and Dens of Iniquity: Why Don't the Cops Stop Them? Mar 31, 2021
    Show notes

Whenever a new social media platform launches there is always the elusive invitation. Certain people are given a certain number of codes to share with their friends to build the platform and create buzz.

Some knucklehead gave one to us so of course we went straight in with no plan other than to hear what all the fuss was about.

Listen in as we crash a Clubhouse room and more or less take over the conversation...as we do.

In our first Clubhouse experience, we tackle the light topic of the oldest trade in the world. Tyler wants to know how situations like the one in Atlanta aren't prevented by the cops shutting them down.

Yoga for First Responders CEO Olivia Mead Mar 24, 2021
    Show notes

We know what you're thinking. Yoga immediately brings to mind one of two images: Either images of impossibly skinny girls in their 20s stretching on a beach or Gary from weekend graves barely fitting into his sweatpants. You do you.

This week on the show the guys welcome Yoga for First Responders CEO Olivia Mead to discuss not only the benefits of yoga in the three disciplines, but to destroy some of your preconceptions about yoga and the benefits we can all reap from practicing it.

    In this episode, you'll discover:

    • The benefits of yoga and why it's not "just stretching"
    • How YFFR tailors their program to First Responders, not the other way around
    • How to get YFFR into your agency
    • How Olivia deals with a husband on "A" watch
