Legal Documents every First Responder needs with Wendy K Reynolds Mar 10, 2021
    Show notes

Oof. That's a rough subject line, right? Lord knows we as a species aren't big on considering our own mortality, but for those of us working in the world of First Responders, we really should be required to do just that.

This week we tackle a confusing topic: legal documents. Wendy K Reynolds is an expert in Estate Planning and, as we learn from this episode of What's Your Emergency, an accomplished lawyer, DA and judge.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • What documents every first responder should have prepared
    • How to make sure you're dealing with a person who cares
    • Why having an estate plan doesn't require an actual estate like you think
    • How Wendy was found half dead in a car crash that killed her parents and 14 month old sister

Dr. Sharon Grossman and the 7E Solution to Burnout Feb 24, 2021
    Show notes

Burnout in the disciplines is real. We all know it. Trouble is, most of the resources made available to first responders are tips on avoiding future stress (good luck with that), avoiding alcohol (C'mon, man), and maybe go and get you some therapy

Justin has been going through anxiety and burnout for almost two full years (possibly longer) and thought there wasn't any more help out there.

Then, he stumbled on our guest's book, The 7E Solution to Burnout. Curious about the subtitle, "Transforming Exahuasted to Extraordinary" Justin dove in expecting the usual advice he had already encountered. It could not have been any different.

Dr. Sharon Grossman joins us on the show today and we discuss:

    • Identifying Burnout in yourself and addressing the possible cause(s)
    • Why keeping your job is an option most ignore
    • Tips on dealing with anxiety derived from supervisors and workplace stress
    • How Dr. Grossman seems to have written this book while looking over Justin's shoulder

    Ask WYE - Issue 56 - Our DUI Experience Feb 17, 2021
    Show notes

In true WYE-fashion, we turn the tables on the week's Ask WYE. While recording a future episode with our guest, we started talking about our past experiences with DUI.

No, not committing them. Arresting them and then prosecuting them. MC took the chance to take the show down a rabbit hole and got our guest, Wendy Reynolds, to give her perspective as a former district attorney.

    You'll learn about:

    • Different experiences with DUI
    • The "wet and reckless" (it's not dirty...stop it)
    • Ways a prosecuting attorney may (or may not) view DUI
    • Frustrations felt by both LEOs and Prosecutors involving DUI

Refresh2021 and the Future of Online Education with Batt Chief Tom Bouthillet Feb 10, 2021
    Show notes

During these challenging times (Aren't you sick of getting those emails?), Battalion Chief Tom Bouthillet saw an opportunity to improve EMT and Paramedic education and decided not to just watch it go by.

The result was an entirely online education program that offered 30 hours of Continuing Credit Units for providers stuck at home due to Covid restrictions. And he didn't just read some slides on a cell phone camera and upload it to Youtube.

Calling in heavy hitters in the Pre-Hospital world, Tom lined up the folks who literally wrote the book in their respective fields to give engaging presentations unlike the EMS profession has ever seen.

HM and MC ask Chief Bouthillet:

    • What was the inspiration behind Refresh2021?
    • Why was the decision made to make the content free on ProdigyEMS.com?
    • Who are some of the experts presenting at Refresh2021?
    • Is this format the future for EMS education?

    Ask 55 - LODD Survivor Benefits - 2221 9.58 AM Feb 03, 2021
    Show notes

Listener Teri fired a question to Justin at Justin@WYERadio.com asking about benefits for first responder families after a line of duty death. While your hosts think this is a no brainer, there are apparently municipalities that do not automatically offer benefits for the surviving families of first responders killed in the line of duty.

A quick search revealed a curious case the guys dive into involving the death of an Officer in North Dakota and how it spurred lawmakers to expand benefits to the family. This touched off a tangent discussion because, really, that's what we do!

Garrett TeSlaa & 6 Tips to Improve Your Leadership Skills Jan 27, 2021
    Show notes

This week the guys welcome back Garrett TeSlaa, host of the Squadroom Podcast to discuss 6 key points to consider when looking to lead in the disciplines. It doesn't take a high score on the Lt's test or any brass on your collar, it takes the right attitude and application of the right tools.

    In this episode we discuss:

    • Staying relevant and finding help around you
    • Why leadership is not tied to rank or position
    • When to call in other resources
    • Why staying focused on the next step is as important, if not more so, than the final target

    Ask WYE - Issue 54 - Schrodinger's Retirement Jan 20, 2021
    Show notes

Ever heard of Schrodinger's Cat? We're introducing a concept called Schrodinger's Retirement. To get a better (and brief) understanding of this oft quoted concept, check out the full show notes.

Why are we diving so deep into theoretical physics on a first responder podcast? Because one of our hosts is experiencing what the other host refers to as Schrodinger's Retirement.

When asked if Jason is, in fact, retired from law enforcement the answer is confusing and has so many different moving parts that Justin has officially decided he is both retired and not retired until we can open the box.

    Season 3 Premiere! Jan 13, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode, the guys are back together, in studio, after a 10 day quarantine since Jason left the area to visit family over the holiday. With new toys and equipment, hopefully the show sounds cleaner and crisper and all our bad jokes are easier to hear.

The guys discuss new segments, future guests and offer brief comments about recent events. Coming up in Season 3 you may hear:

    • If Jason is actually retired. Or not. Or whatever
    • How to handle an interview with a national radio show with Scott Kier
    • Transitioning from LEO to Real Estate with Michael the Realtor
    • The future of online learning/certification with Tom Bouthillet
    • New segments on mental health and how we're handling the stress of the job (or retirement) and Covid.
