A Career in the Rear View: What Will We Miss? Jul 15, 2020
    Show notes

In the wake of recent protests and calls for extensive reform of policing, in some cases abolishing it, law enforcement is seeing a rash of retirements and folks hanging up their vests.

In this week's episode Justin tries to get Jason, our law enforcement expert, to think about the things he'll miss when he retires sometime in the coming months or years (20.5 months we think is the exact maximum he has left).

    Ask WYE - Issue 44 - What's YOUR Emergency? Jul 08, 2020
    Show notes

This week, the guys need your help! We are nearing the two-year anniversary of the launch of What's Your Emergency (and if Justin doesn't get Jason the appropriate 2 Year gift, there will be hell to pay) and we want to continue to deliver the kind of content to which you want to listen.

Answer a simple question for us:

What are you struggling with right now that we can assist with?

Be it Personal or Professional, Financial or Physical, or anything in between, this show wants to emphasize the "Your" in WYE.

Motorcop Defunds the Police - Minneapolis and Beyond Part III Jul 01, 2020
    Show notes

We at WYE took it a different way and (gasp) landed in the middle, looking at what many folks have always been asking: Can Law Enforcement be better?

Short answer? Yes. But how? This week Justin sits Jason down and tells him "OK, I've defunded the Police, now rebuild it from scratch. What stays, what goes, what gets highlighted? Go."

What follows is a discussion including:

    • Introducing efficiency and simplicity into reporting
    • More action from law makers to hold those arrested accountable instead of issuing a citation
    • Expanding capabilities and staffing of "Community Aides" for non injury collisions, noise complaints and other minor issues
    • A better definition of "high level of service" some bureaucrats seem to think means lights and sirens and a gun to every single complaint.

Ask WYE - Issue 43 - Covid resurgence from the protests? Jun 24, 2020
    Show notes

In recent weeks, tens of thousands of people across the nation have gathered in large groups, some wearing masks (some wearing gas masks in fact) and others not during the civil unrest following the killing of George Floyd.

Patron and old time friend of the show, Phil, asks about the protests and if they could be responsible for the sudden upswing of Covid-19 positive cases across the nation.

Be Careful What You Ask (Chant) For - Minneapolis and Beyond Part II Jun 17, 2020
    Show notes

Today, the guys discuss civil unrest as a member of public safety and how rioting doesn't solve anything and looting doesn't solve anything and massive protests doesn't solve anything and taking a knee doesn't solve anything...but here we are anyway. This week get our take on:

    • Civil unrest and how this isolated incident maybe isn't as isolated as some would like it to be
    • How breaking windows at the auto parts store doesn't seem to line up with the stated purpose of the march
    • Will Law Enforcement in general rally behind the phrase "America, we're leaving"?
    • What does a guy holding Lego at a looted store tell us about mob mentality, group think and what Lego did soon after Minneapolis erupted in chaos

Ask WYE - Issue 42 - What to expect at your Volunteer Firefighter Interview Jun 10, 2020
    Show notes

Career fire jobs have almost a cottage industry built up at the front door to teach you how to sit, how to answer, how to react, probably even how to smell to get that coveted career fire job, but what about the Volunteer companies?

This week, Justin tackles this question with some of the same advice he offered Phil over the phone in an effort to take some stress out of becoming a volunteer firefighter. This week you'll learn:

    • What kind of fire/rescue scenarios you'll be expected to answer
    • Tips and trick to answer the dreaded "Why would you be a good fit for our department?" questions
    • Steps to take before you even apply for the spot
    • Whether or not Phil got the nod to join his local VFD

Changing the Culture in the Disciplines - Minneapolis and Beyond Part I Jun 03, 2020
    Show notes

The death of George Floyd at the hands (knee) of a Minneapolis Police Officer has touched off a powder keg of emotions, protests, riots and political tap dancing. This week our show talks first responders and addresses what it feels like to see people we call "brother and sister" destroying the hard work we do day in and day out.

In an upcoming show they will discuss the fallout, directions to go from here and how to rebuild the trust we have let people like the MPD Officer take away from us all. This week they discuss:

    • The death of George Floyd, specifically the submission technique that caused his death
    • Alternate methods for restraint, including when and how to get a co-worker to de-escalate their efforts
    • Tips for addressing overly engaged co-workers both at the scene and back at the station/yard/PD
    • Dealing with emotions running fast and hard both at the scene and later on

Ask WYE - Issue 41 - What's with all the different ranks? May 27, 2020
    Show notes

This week, the guys try to compare and contrast their current Departments, old Departments, Departments that they live near...well, it gets messy, but here's a good primer on what rank equals what between our three disciplines!

    You'll learn:

    • Is a Police Lieutenant the same as a Fire Lieutenant?
    • Is an EMS Captain the same as an Army Captain?
    • Why do some Departments have Corporals and why do some not?
    • Why do Firefighters always cook chili?

Story Time - WYE Style May 20, 2020
    Show notes

In this bonus episode, originally recorded last September, the guys chat with long-time friend and fan of the show, Sean Eddy. In an off-air moment, the stories started flying and a familiar thought occurred..."Why aren't we recording?!"

    So, we did.

If you miss the bygone days of The Crossover Show (minus the swears) wherein we just regaled you with entertaining tales, this bonus episode is for you. You'll learn:

    • Why Sean is lucky to still be employed ;-)
    • How MC charmed a superior to get his job
    • The importance of keeping a good sense of humor (or humour for our international friends)

We'll be back next week with a brand new show!

We Gotta Get Outta This Place - What to do as SiP is lightened May 13, 2020
    Show notes

As we've said in previous shows, it's OK to come out of SiP with a new language, home immaculate and a new side job, but it's also OK to come out just the way you went in.

That being said, the guys are here to offer some tips to make sure your emergence from the cocoon is a safe one:

    • Are masks really helping? If so, how, when and why do I wear one?
    • What is the single best thing to make your home easier for rescuers to find?
    • Home monitoring and home alarms are great, but are they still being monitored?
    • Why is MC dressing up as the old guy from Toy Story who cleans up Woody?
