    Ask WYE - Issue 40 - Kids These Days May 06, 2020
    Show notes

Not just for the parents among us this time, our recent guest Joe Newman chimed in with a question about if we on the streets as first responders have seen a change in kids, parenting, or both.

This week, the guys cross the lines between peace keepers and caregivers and authoritarians in their own homes, taking childhood experiences that are literally opposite yet land in almost the same space as adults. How does that compute? Covered this week by your experts:

    • Has law enforcement seen a generational change in recent years?
    • Do tactics used in police and EMS have a place in determining if little Johnny is telling the truth?
    • Has every generation asked this question? If so, where is the answer?
    • Is it safe for MC to come over and punch HM in the uvula during Shelter in Place?

Parenting Emergencies: Raising Lions with Joe Newman Apr 29, 2020
    Show notes

It sounds funny, but some children are different than others and finding a strategy to successfully deal with the children can be a challenge. Just ask MC. As you, our loyal listener, is well aware, MClet #3 has presented challenges and opportunities throughout the years. Be it yelling, hitting, throwing things or just plain being mean, MC and the wife were near their wit's end.

Enter Joe Newman. His book Raising Lions was like he was writing about their family. The techniques they've been able to deploy have had a tremendous positive impact, so much so that we invited him on the show. We discuss:

    • Have kids changed? Has parenting changed?
    • What are some of the techniques that work on children that act like lions?
    • What are the three stages in development that explain how sometimes the terrible twos become the terrible adolescence?
    • Can any of this be applied to supervising first responders?

Don't forget to enter the giveaway and get yourself a FREE hour long call with Joe!

Rights, Responsibility and Reason. Or not. Apr 22, 2020
    Show notes

We get it. Times are tough. None of this is easy. Those of us in the three disciplines are lucky enough to remain employed and support our families while our neighbors and friends who own a small local shop or were our favorite waitress at the local burger bar are struggling. That's no excuse to go crazy. This week the guys discuss:

    • Are armed protests that ignore social distancing recommendations appropriate?
    • Where does one person's right to get others sick intersect with someone's right to not get sick?
    • When did everyone go insane that they can't get into the Olive Garden?
    • Even though HM gave himself a Covid haircut, how long can MC's glorious locks hold on?

Ask WYE - Issue 39 - What's the best advice for a lateral being the new guy? Apr 15, 2020
    Show notes

Listener PJ reached out recently with a question about changing agencies.

While MC has been at the same agency, HM has bounced around a bit and both share advice on being the new guy when you're not really all that new. This week the guys discuss:

    • How to handle being experienced but not able to use your experience.
    • When to hold your tongue and when to interject.
    • What are some of the common mistakes when changing agencies.
    • Is it unfair for the new hires with experience to test for promotion?

First Responder Tax Relief - What does it all mean? Apr 08, 2020
    Show notes

Lots of rumors and bad advice are floating around the firehouse, ambulance yard, and PD briefing rooms these days. To combat the rumor mill, we brought in our favorite tax expert to talk about what the upcoming stimulus means for those of us in the Disciplines.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • What are Covid-19 stimulus checks going to look like?
    • How will Uncle Sam know I'm eligible?
    • Is this a loan or advance on next year's taxes?
    • Do I still need to file my taxes on April 15th?

Ask WYE - Issue 38 - What are Police doing different during Shelter in Place? Apr 01, 2020
    Show notes

Fire Departments and EMS Services across the nation are greatly changing their response patterns in response to the global pandemic that is Covid-19, but what about police?

Has Law Enforcement had to change how they respond, where they respond or any of the services they offer?

To find out, we tracked down our resident law enforcement expert Jason (He was sheltering at home) to find out what is different on the beat, in the car and on the streets.

The Best Laid Plans - Adapting to Social Distancing Mar 25, 2020
    Show notes

Still under a State wide Shelter in Place order your hosts Jason and Justin (the Police and the Fireman) are back to talk about the crazy week they've had not coming into contact with anyone. Except for the part where they have to.

The guys talk about the unique challenges of avoiding contact with people in a job that literally requires just that and how they view the economy's reaction to the virus rapidly sweeping through the US and having disastrous results in Italy and Spain. In this episode the guys talk about:

    • What Justin means by "contact precautions" and why he hasn't hugged his wife or kids in a week
    • How has MC's response with the trainee changed?
    • Is PD actually staging and waiting for an all clear from EMS now?
    • If 1 week was this stressful...how will we handle 3...or more?

WYE Special - Report from the Frontlines of Covid-19 Mar 16, 2020
    Show notes

How's that Social Distancing treating you, friends? Freaking out yet?

Lucky for us, our Fire and EMS expert Justin Schorr has been on the front lines of this epidemic turned pandemic since early in its surveillance. Working at an international airport and working closely with the CDC and local health departments Justin has been monitoring not only the symptoms of travelers but the response to said symptoms.

Justin's experience with epidemics didn't start in December 2019, he was on an ambulance during the H1N1, SARS, Swine flu and was also at an airport designing response for the Ebola outbreak.

In this episode MC asks the questions many first responders, as well as their families, have been asking:

    • What is the difference between an epidemic and a pandemic?
    • Is Covid-19 just another flu?
    • Are the new restrictions on gatherings, "social separation," really necessary? Will they help?
    • What can we do, as first responders, to protect ourselves and our families?
    • Why is Justin live via satellite from 4 minutes away?

The article mentioned in the show has been updated even in the 30 minutes since the guys recorded. It is, by far, the most balanced evaluation of current data we have seen as of now. Medium article by Thomas Pueyo.

Like we said in a recent show, wash your hands, avoid touching your face, stay away from sick people and if you're sick stay away from others.

Wear PPE when possible, maintain 6 feet separation when you can't and stay away from as many others as possible for as long as you can. That's the only way we can slow the spread of this virus, we owe it to ourselves, our families and our community.

Self-defense or Assault in Atlantic City? Mar 11, 2020
    Show notes

According to the Courier Post story from March 5th 2020, the incident that occurred in November 2019 has the EMTs in hot water of their own boiling. The crew arrived onscene to a patient handcuffed, apparently with blood on his shirt from what was described as a head injury.

What was caught on the casino cameras following their arrival will make you tilt your head to the side and want to jump in and help...the suspect. They proceed to physically hit, strike and yell at the patient, all while he's still handcuffed.

    • Who besides PD carries handcuffs? Should private security be a replacement for PD at a scene when someone has been restrained?
    • Does EMS (or Fire) get any self defense training?
    • Is striking someone in custody a crime?
    • When does self defense become assault?

Ask WYE - Issue 36: Professional Appearance Mar 04, 2020
    Show notes

All public safety agencies have some kind of grooming and uniform standard, but where did it come from and has it evolved with the times? Sounds like in many places that answer is no.

Officers all over the Nation are made to cover up sleeve tattoos, but should they have to keep wearing long sleeves in 100 degree heat just because an old rule book says so?

What about hair style and color? Shouldn't we be able to freely express ourselves while still serving the community? And who decides if a tattoo or piercing or hair color is "in good taste"?
