What Were They Thinking?

Latest Episodes:

Heat (w/Britany Sparrow) Dec 02, 2021

Show notes

No, it's not the one with DeNiro and Pacino. Nor is it the Sandra Bullock/Melissa McCarthy cop comedy. This week, the guys bring in first-time guest and independent filmmaker Britany Sparrow to discuss the bizarre Burt Reynolds action (?) movie Heat. This movie has everything: it's written by acclaimed screenwriter William Goldman (!) adapted from a William Goldman novel (!!!), Burt says every horrible creepy insult in the first ten minutes of it, the film inexplicably becomes The Karate Kid halfway through and that's just the tip of the iceberg!

Blade: Trinity (w/Joshua Kotsabasakis) Nov 25, 2021

Show notes

Josh is back so you know what that means - another comic book movie! This week, he joins the guys to discuss the "final" installment in the Wesley Snipes vampire saga, Blade: Trinity. What's with all the Deadpool-level Ryan Reynolds ad-libbing? How come it feels so weird to hear Triple H swear? Do MP3s really get people pumped up to fight vampires? Did NO ONE think through the name "The Night Stalkers" before assigning it to the good guys? All this and much more!

Gamera vs. Viras Nov 18, 2021

Show notes

It's that time of year again - time to fly Air Gamera! This year, Nathan picks the clip show extravaganza Gamera vs. Viras. Did the alien spaceships look like Madonna's Beetlejuice bra or bumblebee butts? Why are these junior scouts allowed to operate a highly deadly submarine without any supervision? Did Misao invent the smartwatch and is Jim secretly Tim Cook? Why were they taking erotic pictures of Gamera? And why did this children's movie have one of the most violent scenes in any Gamera flick?

Twilight (w/Amanda the Jedi) Nov 11, 2021

Show notes

This week, the guys are joined by a returning guest as Amanda the Jedi swings in to discuss a film that is near and dear to her heart: Twilight. What is this renaissance we're living in and why are we living in it? Stephenie Meyer did WHAT with a real tribe?! Is this the most hilarious romantic dialogue in any movie ever made? How difficult is it to use a ketchup bottle? And of course, the age-old question - why is vampire baseball the single greatest thing to happen on the planet Earth? All this and more in a JAM-PACKED new episode!

Silent Rage (w/Galen Howard) Nov 04, 2021

Show notes

Schlocktober is over so why not transition back to regular flicks with the action/horror hybrid and Chuck Norris vehicle Silent Rage. Galen Howard returns to join the guys in breaking down this absolutely insane movie. Is Stephen Furst playing the REAL serial killer in this movie? Why does the plot seemingly change into a different movie every 15 minutes? How is no one shutting down that hospital that only does illegal medical experiments? And how in the hell does Buford Pusser get mentioned so many times in this episode?

Pumpkinhead Oct 28, 2021

Show notes

Schlocktober comes to a screeching halt with this final episode for October as the gents discuss one of the two films directed by creature feature maestro Stan Winston - Pumpkinhead starring Lance Henriksen. Why does Nathan love this movie so much? Why did no other characters check for a pulse after a kid is hit by a bike and clearly still alive? How come Nathan and Brendan can't tell who's who in the mess of adult victims that come to town? Did someone just get STABBED WITH A GUN!? All these questions and more will... probably be answered in this week's episode!

The Human Centipede 2 (w/Home Video Hustle) Oct 21, 2021

Show notes

Schlocktober soldiers on as the long-awaited followup finally occurs as Brent from the Home Video Hustle podcast pops in to discuss The Human Centipede 2 with Nathan and Brendan. The film is discussed in all its super gross detail and could this be one of the more angrier appearances from one of the hosts? Shouldn't Martin start off as a somewhat put-upon sympathetic character so we care about anyone in the movie? Why did Brent get angry about something in the film that almost went unnoticed? How in the hell did Brendan not catch what the ending implied and why it made EVERYONE angry?! Look, anger is the name of the game here, okay!? ANGER!

Slumber Party Massacre II (w/Jason MacLeod) Oct 14, 2021

Show notes

This week, Shlocktober continues as the guys bring back Jason MacLeod to help dissect the driller killer sequel Slumber Party Massacre II. Just how long did the girls take to choreograph that dance number that was solely for their own enjoyment? How cheap are the cheap porn credits? Have you ever seen a slasher finale set to a musical number BY THE KILLER? Are the dream sequences real? And how long will Denny's hold your booth for in the middle of the night?

Vamp Oct 07, 2021

Show notes

Surprisingly, Nathan had NOT seen this week's film as a very young child but alas, the guys watched Vamp (thanks to Steve and Izzy for the Listeners Choice pick!) and had some stuff to say - why is everyone turned on by the very bizarre "striptease" by Grace Jones in full kabuki makeup? Do you think Gedde Watanabe was relieved to not have to effect an "accent" in an 80s movie for once? Does this film have one of the worst payoffs to a running bit? And for the love of all that is holy, can we COOL IT with the puns during the finale?!

True Crime (1996) Sep 30, 2021

Show notes

No it's not the Clint Eastwood one, it's not the singular version of that weird one with Jim Carrey that no one saw and it's certainly not the entire genre itself but the guys DO talk about the Alicia Silverstone straight-to-video 90s "hit," True Crime. Is the title really referring to the murder that surrounds the film or another far more sinister crime? What is with the weird religious themes that pop up from time to time? Do you have to register your mace in California? All this and more in this week's episode!
