What Were They Thinking?

Latest Episodes:

Casper (w/Mariah Lirette) Feb 10, 2022

Show notes

It's Mariah's turn to pick the movie and she also joins the guys to discuss it! That's right, this week they discuss the 1995 big-screen adaptation of a "beloved" cartoon - Casper. They talk about the very dark turns and foul language in this children's film, the controversial choice of Casper having four fingers (and weirdly referencing it!), the Lazarus and its ability to only bring ONE person back to life, Nathan's love for Cathy Moriarty and much more.

Black Dog (w/Andy Hamilton) Feb 03, 2022

Show notes

It's that time of year when the better halves get to pick the movie! This year, Patty picked the Patrick Swayze vehicle (no pun intended) Black Dog. Thankfully, Patrick Swayze-certified expert Andy Hamilton joins the guys to help them break down this insane truckin' movie. Why does Meat Loaf disappear for 45 minutes of the film? Is Jack Crews secretly a mass murderer? Was Randy Travis purposely singing really badly and if so, why does it suddenly get way better an hour later? Is there a buddy cop movie going on in the B-plot? Also: Nathan comes up with a way better alternate ending for Randy Travis' character Earl.

Old (w/Lindsay Escoffery) Jan 27, 2022

Show notes

To cap off an eventful month of last year's misfires, your hosts take aim at one of the wildest rides: the M. Night Shyamalan movie Old, which asks the question: what if everyone was stuck on an island that aged you super-quickly and no one talked like a human being? Listen to the drama unfold as Lindsay joins the fray for another Shyamalan banger where they discuss the overwhelming amount of foreshadowing, the absolutely insane and unintentionally hilarious childbirth scene, the greatest name ever for a hip hop artist and much more. Plus: Nathan reveals his mind-blowing pandemic theory.

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (w/Home Video Hustle) Jan 20, 2022

Show notes

Pressing forward through the worst of 2021, the guys tackle a found-footage disasterpiece known as Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. Thankfully, they have recruited a helping hand in Brent from the Home Video Hustle podcast, who appreciated this nap of a movie. So why is this episode longer than usual for such a nothing movie? Well, they may have gotten off-topic... a lot. They do discuss the nonsensical camera work, the legalities of obtaining hospital security footage, Brendan's hatred of one character in particular and much more!

Space Jam: A New Legacy (w/Jerika Layne) Jan 13, 2022

Show notes

And onwards into 2021, the guys discuss another reboot/sequel many years removed from the original film in the form of Space Jam: A New Legacy. The guys are also joned by resident extreme sports expert Jerika, who tries to help them figure out if the original Space Jam exists in this world as a movie or a real-life event. They also bemoan the lack of any Jock Jams, wince at how incredibly long the actual basketball section of the film is (half of a TWO-HOUR MOVIE), cringe at all the Warner Bros self-gratification with their extensive use of footage from other movies and all the Intellectual Property cameos and more. Plus: Jerika tells a harrowing tale of when she saw the film in theatres.

Mortal Kombat Jan 06, 2022

Show notes

All January-long is reserved to "celebrate" the Worst of 2021 and so the guys start off hot by talking about Mortal Kombat, the R-rated attempt at creating a better version of the 90s flick. Why does the tournament never actually happen in the movie? What's with all the obnoxious shoehorned video game references? Why suck up to the fans this much and yet still introduce a COMPLETELY NEW main character? Is "Arcana" this movie's version of "metachlorians"? All this and more!

Livestream for the Cure 2020: Cool Cat Saves the Kids Dec 30, 2021

Show notes

Your hosts are on vacation until January so enjoy their segment from back in April on the hugely successful charity event "Livestream for the Cure" run by the wonderful Nicholas Haskins! And yes, they discuss Cool Cat Saves the Kids, a very strange "feature-length" PSA created by the very strange and problematic filmmaker Derek Savage. They talk about how the cat costume can barely move, Cool Cat being the product of bestiality (that's not even a joke, they LITERALLY show his biological parents to be a human and a cat), uncomfortable child actors, the cameos from Erik Estrada and Vivica A. Fox and much more.

Next week: we return to our regularly scheduled programming with our month-long series on the Worst of 2021.

Home Sweet Home Alone (w/Mariah Lirette) Dec 16, 2021

Show notes

Tis the season! The guys present their Christmas episode with regular recurring Christmas guest Mariah Lirette as they discuss the Disney Plus Exclusive Home Sweet Home Alone. Does this movie really think that making the 'burglars' into a likeable cute family was the appropriate update for this film? Why does the movie keep forgetting that Jeff is a computer genius when he can't figure out simple mechanics? Why does this movie waste nothing roles on so many talented comedians? And could that Devin Ratray cameo be even MORE embarrassing?

Next week: we unlock the Patreon Vault for a special Holiday episode.

Manos: The Hands of Fate Dec 09, 2021

Show notes

To celebrate 200 episodes of podcasting, the guys talk about Manos: The Hands of Fate, one of the all-time worst and most incomprehensible movies ever made. Despite that, how is this film linked with an Academy Award-winning screenwriter? Is Neil Breen a more competent filmmaker than Harold Warren? How about that incredibly bizarre "jazzy" soundtrack? And if you took out the pauses and awkward stares, would the movie be ten minutes long?
