The Hawks kicked off their 2023 season with a win against Utah St. Final score was 24-14 in a game that many felt the Hawks left a lot on the table. The football season is officially here and so is our first game preview of the year! We kick off this episode with a slew of questions that revolve around game week and what that looks like for the guys. What does a practice week look like, which day is the hardest, how do guys taper and recover for game day? What does travel to hotel look like, and what does procedure look like once there? Cade's health gets discussed as well as the amount of playing time in Week 1 for the new QB1 is still up in the air. Then we cross over into some talk on the Defense and if an experience QB for the Aggies will make any difference against Coop and the crew. We dive into the betting lines and our first Ward's Winners of the year, and make our picks for week 1!

Nick is one of the former Asst Strength Coaches during the Walkons time in Iowa City, and has since moved on to be the Head man at Elon University in North Carolina. He was always cutting edge as an assistant looking to push the field of strength and conditioning forward. He is respected as one of the best in the industry and has guided numerous guys as his assistants on to bigger and better jobs. He is a legend and big time friend of the show. We talk the nitty gritty of strength and conditioning and off season training, opening the season on ACC network against Wake Forest, how to make guys great athletes, how strong is too strong?, GPS data on speedwork to prevent over training, parenting kids through their own athletic endeavors with his knowledge, and much more!

Can This Hawkeye O-Line Be 'Great' ? | WUW 448 Aug 24, 2023

The clock ticks down to 9 days away from Hawkeye Football and the guys sit down to discuss a variety of topics. We get Library Gary as he has settled back into Iowa City after a summer back in Denver. We talk throwing up during/before football games. We preview the Backpocket LIVE podcast event that we are doing on Friday, September 1st. We announce the Walkon Army Fantasy Football leagues, make sure to join if you are a Patreon member and interested in winning some merch packages. We talk about the new AD, a discord members thoughts on Beth Goetz, and potentially getting her or Gary Barta on the show. Kids Day happened, and we talk Cade McNamara's lower body muscle injury. Some Ward tailgate discussion, a few comments on the Utah State Aggies, the 25 point average, the hottest fall camp practices we ever endured, turf versus grass fields. How good will they be this year, and can they get to Great at all. We finish the episode by watching a practice clip from 2015, where Drake takes his self proclaimed hardest hit ever by Anthony Gair, a hit that separated his helmet from his head. Big episode as we draw ever so close to the start of College football season. Today after a short introductory conversation we dive into 2 main topics for the episode. The first, Where would the Iowa Football coaching job rank amongst the rest of the country? Top 15? Top 25? and we discuss the 247Sports list of the Top 16 jobs across the nation. We then move on to the Iowa Football schedule for 2023, and we give our thoughts game by game on the potential outcomes for this season. We go over a few of the betting lines out right now such as odds to win the West, the B1G Championship, and likelihood of winning more than 8.5 games. We also polled our private discord to gather their predictions for the season as well.

Rai Braithwaite | WUW 446 Aug 17, 2023

Raimond Braithwaite is in his 19th year as a member of the strength and conditioning staff with the University of Iowa football program. He was named director in March, 2021, after being named interim director in June, 2020. Braithwaite was a member of the Iowa staff from 2002-04 and rejoined the Hawkeye program after serving as the head strength and conditioning coach at Delaware State (2005-07). In this episode Drake and Kevin catch up with Coach after years of being away from the weight room in Iowa City. They talk about his role in recruiting process, the complexities and nuance of running a D1 program like Iowa, the intensity of big lift days, the biggest freaks he has coached in the weight room, and a whole lot more.

Realignment - The Walkons Craft A New Big Ten | WUW 445 Aug 14, 2023

Realignment talk and football talk start around the 27:00 mark, before that is just the standard BS banter from us.
We open the episode thinking Kevin wouldn't be joining us, and then later he shows up by surprise. We discuss some fun message board trash talking about our show, getting demolished on social about the wearing jerseys opinion, and all other instances in which people come at the Walkons. We discuss the upcoming LIVE Walkon show from Backpocket Brewery that is set to happen on Friday the 1st of September. We get around to talking football and conference realignment, what started the crazy mess, where the conferences could settle when its all over, and if there is actually any positives to it all? We also create our own Big Ten in a hypothetical where we get to choose 18 teams for the conference.

Mark Weisman | WUW 444 Aug 10, 2023

Mark transferred in to Iowa as a Walkon FB from Air Force. Went on to become a pivotal feature of the Iowa run game in 2012, 2013, and 2014. He is, from the inside perspective, one of the most respected teammates we ever had, and one of the best overall 'Hawkeyes' there has ever been. He entered the Strength and Conditioning world after football ended, and has since found his way to director of performance inside the Chicago Cubs organization. We go in depth on the differences between sports when it comes to training, the nuance of the minor league baseball system, what they focus on off the field, what his day to day looks like, what his own personal exercise has evolved into and much more.
