    Voices of Your Village

Let’s get real, this whole raising tiny humans thing is wild. That’s why I created a place where parents, caregivers, teachers, and experts come together to create the modern parenting village. We can support one another on this crazy journey so it doesn’t have to be this hard.

249 - A Roadmap for Parenting Even the Most Challenging Kids with Dayna Abraham Sep 14, 2023
    Show notes

You're listening to Voices of Your Village, have you ever found yourself looking at parenting advice or tips or accounts or things like that, and being like, okay, that sounds great, but my child would not respond to that. That wouldn't work for them. You know that I am not here for a one-size-fits-all approach, which is why Dayna Abraham's book, "Calm the Chaos, A Fail-Proof Roadmap for Parenting Even the Most Challenging Kids" is so darn helpful. We got to have this discussion around neurodivergence and really looking at what does that mean and what would it look like for us to really understand how our own nervous system works, how our kids' nervous systems work, and then what makes them tick, what fires them up, what helps them engage in certain things, what pulls them away and disconnects them from things, what puts them into fight mode, when we can understand these things, then we can respond with intention. One of her core messages that I just dig so much is that your child isn't broken, and she helps you really understand your unique child. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Dayna Abraham as much as I did! Connect with Dayna: Purchase "Calm the Chaos" nowFreebies and more!

248 - Navigating social media privacy and reputation with kids and teens with Devorah Heitner Sep 07, 2023
    Show notes

You're listening to Voices of Your Village. And on this episode, I got to have a conversation that I personally have been wanting to have for a long time. I got to hang out with Dr. Devorah Heitner and chat about Growing Up In Public her latest book. I think it's huge because we are living in this world as parents that we didn't grow up in when it comes to screens and navigating privacy and reputation with kids and teens. Like, if a teen posts this photo, what does that mean for them now or in the long -term that people are losing their jobs over tweets or things that show up online? And so this is a conversation I personally have been very curious about. Like, what does it look like to parent in this world, to support kids with these tools that they need to thrive when it wasn't something we experienced when we were younger? Her book, Growing Up in Public, is a phenomenal resource for this. And it's one of those things where, for myself, I like to feel prepared and look at, like, how am I setting kids up for success down the road? So I personally am really interested in diving into things like this. Even though I don't have a teenager right now, I wanna look at how am I sharing about my tiny humans and what am I doing to serve or support them in that way? And really examining my role in this now to then look at how do I set them up for success down the road as well? You can snag her book, Growing Up in Public, wherever books are sold, and I, 10 out of 10, would recommend. All right, folks, let's dive in.

247 - Raising kids differently than you were raised with Dr. Lynyetta Willis Aug 31, 2023
    Show notes

You're listening to Voices of Your Village. And in this episode, we get to talk about what it looks like in practice to raise children differently than we were raised. I got to hang out with one of my favorite people, Dr. Lynyetta Willis, to chat about this. In this episode, we really get to go down and dirty into like, what does this look like in practice? Because I don't know about you, but there are some things I want to pass on from my childhood and some things that I don't. And how do we do the 'some things I don't' part without completely swinging the pendulum to the other side? It's so hard. It's so hard to do what we haven't seen before. And we get to chat about that today.

246 - After school dysregulation with Lori Goodrich Aug 24, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome back to Voices of Your Village. On this epidoe I got to hang out with Lori Goodrich. She's an occupational therapist that I love and have leaned on over the years for so many things. And we got to chat about restraint collapse. You know, when your kid comes home from school or childcare and they just melt for you, or maybe they've been with a grandparent and all of a sudden they break down for you. That is restraint collapse, where they've held it together all day long and then they collapse for you. We're gonna chat about what this is, what's happening for them, and then ways that you can support your unique child. I dive in depth into the nervous system and what's happening for them and how to figure out what is draining for your kid and what is regulating for your child and how to respond to your unique child in the moment outside of these afterschool times and really just across the board with emotions and regulation.

Tiny Humans, Big Emotions is your guide to raising emotionally intelligent humans and it's available for order right now. It publishes on October 10th and if you order right now at seedandsew.org/book, we will send you some free goodies, you get access to our Back to School workshop to reference to come back to and so much more as a little thanks for ordering ahead of time.

245 - How to Navigate Busy Seasons with KC Davis Aug 17, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome back to Voices of Your Village. And today we get to chat with KC Davis, the author of How to Keep House While You're Drowning. I loved this conversation so much because I feel like I truly, truly needed it. Like, what do we do when it feels like there's 7 billion things that we're supposed to do or that we have to do that are vying for our attention? And it just feels like there's too much when you feel like you're drowning or overwhelmed by all the things. I'm so grateful for the timing of this episode with back to school, a season that often feels like there's so much going on and transitions are so hard, and it can feel really overwhelming. This is also an episode I feel like I will personally come back to.

244 - Raising Emotionally Intelligent Humans with Lauren Stauble Aug 10, 2023
    Show notes

You're listening to Voices of Your Village and I have such a special episode today. I get to bring you Lauren Stauble. Lauren is the co creator of the Collaborative Emotion Processing method. And she's my co author of Tiny Humans, Big Emotions. We got to dive into what the CEP Method is, why we don't believe in a one size fits all approach, and walk you through what does it look like? A little bit in practice, give you insight and really a sneak peek into the kind of stuff that you'll find in the book. We co created the collaborative emotion processing method and researched it across the US. Our research ended in 2018 and we've been working on putting together the data and a comprehensive guide to raising emotionally intelligent humans for you. And it is here.

We are publishing Tiny Humans Big Emotions on October 10 with Harvest Books, part of Harper Collins, and are so excited for it to come to you. I am reading the audiobook, so if you're an audiobook listener, it'll be your girl here reading to you and you can access the book and purchase it at seedandsew.org/book. You can reach out to your local library and ask them to carry it. You can connect with your child's childcare program and ask them to have a copy or share a copy with teachers. Feel free to share it with friends, with siblings, with anyone who is engaging with your tiny human.

If you order before our publication date, before October 10, we are going to send you free goodies. So you go right back there after you order and let us know your name, your email and your order number and we will send you some bonus things that you can dive into right away.

    243 - Back to school Q&A with Ellen Drolette Aug 03, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome back to Voices of Your Village. Today, I get to hang out with Ellen Drolette, and I get to be on the other side of the mic. Ellen got to ask me questions about back to school, and really, how can we support our kids? What can we do to prepare them for what's to come with a new classroom or new teachers or new school, new kids, new routine, all that jazz. There's so much that we can do now and to prepare and then also what it looks like to navigate this in the moment and beyond. I'm diving into a little bit of that here.

I wanted to let you know I have a free workshop, a live workshop coming for you next week. I'm doing two of them, one for teachers and one for parents to support you with this jazz for back to school. It is completely free for anyone who has pre-ordered my book, Tiny Humans, Big Emotions. Head on over to seedandsew.org/book to preorder the book, and then come join me for this workshop. Head to seedandsew.org to join me. All right, let's dive in.

242 - How to mindfully raise kind, confident kids with Hunter Clark-Fields Jul 27, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome back to another episode of Voices of Your Village. Today we get to chat about how to mindfully raise kind, confident kids. We get to hang out with my friend Hunter Clark-Fields. She is the author of Raising Good Humans: a Mindful Guide to Breaking the Cycle of Reactive Parenting and Raising Kind, Confident Kids. And out now is her book Raising Good Humans Every Day. I am so obsessed with this book because it's super practical and you don't have to read the whole book in one. You can open it up and you're like, all right, I can take this one today. I can take this one today, just like, bit by bit. And I love that so much. Here's the thing, I can feel like I'm failing at this work of like, oh, my gosh, I am supposed to just be here and enjoy the moment. And I had this idea of what mindful parenting was and is and really had to do work around that word. And Hunter and I got to chat about it and break it down. And it was such a fun episode to get to hang out with her and talk about what is this really? And y'all, it's not perfection. It's not enjoying every moment. It's not even being present to every moment. I'm so jazzed to get to share this interview with you. All right, folks, let's dive in.

241 - How to talk to kids about death with Child Life Specialist, Ali Waltien Jul 20, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome back villagers, today get to hang out with an old friend of mine. Ali Waltien, a licensed clinical psychologist and a certified child life specialist. Ali started her career in 2008 as a certified child life specialist here at UVM, our children's hospital. I reached out to Ali when I was writing Tiny Humans, Big Emotions, because I really wanted to talk about the emotional aspect, about how to help kids process death and the do's and don'ts, about talking about sickness and death. And it's one of those things that I think all of us grew up with different experiences around it, and it can come with a lot of feelings for us as the adult. So I turned to Ali. This episode is full of real life scripts and tips that anyone can implement.

Welcome back to Voices of Your Village. I got to hang out with Chris Wenger and Jesse Ginsburg. They are both speech language pathologists who really dive into Neurodiversity affirming practices and really how to celebrate and honor Neurodiversity. I love so much about this interview, but personally, I really love having conversations with SLPs Speech Language Pathologists who are trained in sensory integration and understand how sensory integration affects how we show up in everything, including our language and communication. This was such a fun one for me. Also, they're fantastic follows over on Instagram, so make sure you head on over there and follow them!
