    Voices of Your Village

Let’s get real, this whole raising tiny humans thing is wild. That’s why I created a place where parents, caregivers, teachers, and experts come together to create the modern parenting village. We can support one another on this crazy journey so it doesn’t have to be this hard.

259 - Decluttering Holiday "Shoulds" with Rachel Nielson Nov 23, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to Voices of Your Village, so this is a selfish episode because I really needed it. This is about how to declutter the "shoulds" in the holiday season. One of my challenges is like, Oh I should be doing this. I should be baking cookies with my kids. I should be doing family photos and holiday cards and getting those sent out. But all of these "shoulds" add up for me. And ultimately, I end up showing up as a parent I don't wanna be when it's a lot of things that really don't matter to me or that I don't super care about, but I can end up in that land of "shoulds".

I got to hang out with Rachel Nielsen and talk about what it looks like. How do we declutter our shoulds? What does it look like to dive into what really matters to us? And then what about the guilt or the fear of missing out? Because boy, do I have that. This was such a rad episode and honestly, super helpful for me personally. I hope it's so helpful for you as well. And look forward to hearing your takeaways and what "shoulds" you are decluttering, what you are gonna let go of.

258 - How to navigate rage as a parent with Kelly Smith Nov 16, 2023
    Show notes

You're listening to Voices of Your Village. And today I get to hang out with Kelly Smith. Kelly is a certified yoga teacher and she's a meditation teacher. She's the host of a podcast called Mindful in Minutes. and she's the author of the book, Mindful in Minutes: Meditation for the Modern Family. We get to dive in in this conversation about my triggers around the words mindfulness, meditation, and how they, for a long time for me, felt like things that were for somebody else and things I did not have time for or understand how people really did and how, in actuality, figuring out what they really are and what it looks like in my social context, in my cultural context, what it looks like has really been transformative for me as a parent, as a person, as a partner in allowing myself to be with all emotions and not try to push them away. In moving from living a life with a lot of anxiety to living pretty anxiety-free and to allowing myself to allow my child to have hard emotions and to see beyond the behavior when he is having those hard emotions because they can often be triggering or inconvenient or at annoying times. And these two practices of mindfulness and meditation really, truly transformed how I live my life.

255 - How to address relationship challenges with Dr.Tracy Dalgleish Oct 26, 2023
    Show notes

You're listening to Voices of Your Village, and today I get to hang out with Dr. Tracey Dalgleish. She and I got to dive into how to address relationship challenges. Y 'all, I don't know about you, but for me, and for us, entering into parenthood especially was this real shift in our relationship. What did it mean to prioritize us or even ourselves individually when we're trying to keep a tiny human alive, when there's someone else who always needs you, and all the things that come along with that that triggers all of it, you know? Dr. Tracey wrote the book, "I Didn't Sign Up For This", and I'm obsessed with it. I think it's so good, and I'm so excited to be able to chat about it here in this episode.

254 - Bedtime stalling with Rachel Lounder Oct 19, 2023
    Show notes

You're listening to Voices of Your Village, and today I get to hang out with one of my favorite humans, our first ever SEED employee, Rachel Lounder, to chat about bedtime stalling. This is something we've been talking about a lot over at the SEED team, behind the scenes, as all of our kids have gone through some bedtime stalling and pushback, and it is a doozy to navigate. So we get to dive into what it looks like, where it's coming from, and what you can do as you move through it. Remember, over at SEED, we are not a one -size -fits -all approach for anything, including sleep. We support folks who are sleeping in all different ways, and whatever works for your family, we help folks access safe sleep in a number of different ways, really focused on connection and emotional development, and really getting kids and families the sleep that they need to thrive. It's a cornerstone for regulation. I'm so glad that you're here and diving into this, and I hope it's helpful for you. I would love to hear your thoughts and more from you on what your big takeaways were, what resonated, and what you want to dive deeper into.

253 - How to practice emotional regulation with kids with Dr. Tina Payne Bryson Oct 12, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome back to Voices of Your Village, and I got to hang out with one of my heroes, Dr. Tina Payne Bryson. She is the co-author of one of my favorite books, The Whole Brain Child, and has authored and co-authored many books beyond that that we dive into in this episode. We got to chat about risk management. And y'all, this is something I feel really passionate about because we get to teach kids what it looks like to listen to their inner voice, and to cultivate that, and to lean on it, to say like, do I feel safe in this situation, and how do I navigate risk? How do I make this call for myself to say, hey, I need help, or I'm gonna be brave, and I can take a risk here? Looking at how to help foster that voice and support it. I am so grateful for the opportunity to get to dive into this conversation with someone that I have so much respect and love for. Dr. Tina Payne Bryson is someone that I truly, like, we mention her in our book and quote her because her work has been so influential in the work that I get to do.

You're listening to Voices of Your Village, and today's episode is one of those where I was like, gosh, I need this at my fingertips at all times, because have you ever like been in one of those scenarios where your kid says something, and all of a sudden you're like, oh, yikes, how am I supposed to respond to this? 250 - Mom burnout and alternatives to typical self care with Dr. Morgan Cutlip Sep 21, 2023
    Show notes

You're listening to Voices of Your Village, and today we're talking about such a needed topic. I got to hang out with Dr. Morgan Cutlip to chat about burnout, in particular moms, and we got to dive into actual practical self-care and how it isn't prescriptive, and that what works for one person is going to be different than what works for someone else. I love this so much because I think so much of our burnout comes back to how we're taking care of ourselves, and what does that look like, and what are the narratives around it, what's the access to it. There's so much that's packed into this. I got to chat about comparison and how that comes up for me, or even our goals and how parenting expectations have shifted and what's working both for us as parents and for kids, and what isn't, and how we can take a good hard look at this so that we can truly show up with more energy and engagement and feeling like ourselves. Morgan wrote the book "Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself", and she's incredible. She's a psychotherapist, and it's packed full of incredible tips and strategies and really truly like practical and applicable. Head on over to wherever you get your books, Barnes and Noble, a local bookstore, Amazon, you name it, and snag "Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself" by Dr. Morgan Cutlip.
