The evolving role of nurses amidst global pandemic: perspectives, and highlights from cancer nursing leaders Apr 22, 2022
    Show notes

In a world that is still acclimatizing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fragility of many aspects of our society has been laid bare. Global health care systems were among the most seriously affected by the SARS-CoV-2 which has put a spotlight on the integral role of nurses not only in day-to-day patient care and running of healthcare facilities but also in public education and awareness campaigns, public health policymaking, and population-based medicine.

In this podcast, we hear from two oncology nursing leaders at the International Conference on Cancer nursing 2022 (ICCN), which took place virtually this year. Patsy Yates, AM, PhD, RN, FACN, FAAN, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, speaks on challenges experienced during the pandemic and positive initiatives that have arisen as a result. Stella Aguinaga Bialous, RN, DrPH, FAAN, University of California San Francisco School of Nursing, San Francisco, CA, advocates for the nursing community to embrace their influence on public health policy. We also catch up with Sarah Hargreaves, PhD, University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK, who discusses findings from a survey on the impact of COVID-19 on lung cancer and mesothelioma nurses during the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) Conference 2022.

Lung Cancer Screening: Current state and future directions Apr 01, 2022
    Show notes

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, and has a very low survival rate, partly due to many patients being diagnosed only once their disease has reached an advanced stage. Screening programmes for high-risk populations are a possible solution to this problem, as it would help to identify more lung cancer cases when they are in early stages, and are therefore more treatable.

In this podcast, we explain the current guidelines from the US, UK, and Europe, talk on key trials in lung cancer screening, and hear from leading experts about possible future screening methods.

Novel treatment approaches in HR+/HER2- breast cancer Mar 25, 2022
    Show notes

Resistance to endocrine therapy in patients with hormone-receptor positive (HR+), HER2-negative breast cancer inevitably results in relapse and metastasis, leading to death. Understanding mechanisms of intrinsic and acquired resistance has been the focus of many clinical studies. Recent advances including the use of cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6) inhibitors and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitors have improved progression-free survival and overall survival in these patients, however, endocrine resistance still develops in some patients. New classes of agents including oral selective estrogen receptor degraders (SERDs) and CDK7 inhibition have been explored in advanced HR+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer.

In this podcast, we hear from Aditya Bardia, MD, MPH, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, Mario Campone, MD, PhD, Cancérologie de l’Ouest, René Gauducheau, St Herblain, France, and Charles Coombes, MD, PhD, Imperial College London, London, UK, as they discuss the latest data evaluating oral SERDs, elcacestrant and amcenestrant, as well as the CDK7 inhibitor, samuraciclib.

New treatment approaches for advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma Mar 18, 2022
    Show notes

Clinical trials presented at the the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Genitourinary Cancers (GU) Symposium 2022 have been investigating treatment options for patients with advanced or metastatic UC who are ineligible for or have progressed on platinum-based chemotherapy, in hopes of improving patient prognosis. The LEAP-011 trial explored the addition of the VEGFR inhibitor, lenvatinib, to first-line pembrolizumab for patients ineligible for platinum-based chemotherapy, in hopes of increasing responsiveness to pembrolizumab. The TROPHY-U-01 trial investigated treatment with sacituzumab govitecan for patients with mUC who had progressed on platinum-based chemotherapy and ICIs. The ATLANTIS trial is exploring personalized maintenance treatment options for patients undergoing palliative chemotherapy in biomarker-defined subgroups of patients with advanced UC.

In this podcast, Yohann Loriot, MD, PhD, Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, France, and the University of Paris-Saclay, Gif-sur-Yvette, France, Petros Grivas, MD, PhD, University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, WA and Simon Crabb, PhD, MBBS, Southampton Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre, University of Southampton, Southampton, UK, outline results from these clinical trials.

Updates on HER2-positive breast cancer Feb 15, 2022
    Show notes

HER2-positive breast cancer accounts for 15-20% of all breast cancer cases. It was associated with a poor prognosis until the approval of trastuzumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting HER2. Since then, the therapeutic landscape for patients with HER2-positive tumors has changed dramatically, with the introduction of other monoclonal antibodies such as pertuzumab, tyrosine kinase inhibitors including lapatinib and neratinib, and the antibody-drug conjugate trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1). Currently, patients with HER2-positive breast cancer are treated with a taxane plus trastuzumab in the first-line setting and with T-DM1 in second-line. Several treatments are emerging as viable options for the third-line setting and beyond. Nevertheless, recent highly promising data from clinical trials investigating novel triple combinations such as tucatinib+trastuzumab+capecitabine, and trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd), an antibody-drug conjugate, has already started reshaping standard of care treatments for HER2-positive breast cancer.

In this exclusive podcast, Rupert Bartsch, MD, of Medical University Vienna, Vienna, Austria, Javier Cortés, MD, PhD, Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona, Spain, and Wolfgang Janni, MD, PhD, of Ulm University, Ulm, Germany, discuss the latest research updates in HER2-positive breast cancer therapy, sharing data from the practice-changing HER2CLIMB (NCT02614794) and DESTINY-Breast03 (NCT03529110) trials.

BTOG 2022: Highlights in lung cancer Feb 11, 2022
    Show notes

For patients with lung cancer, surgical resection is a treatment option and perioperative management is imperative to improve surgical outcomes. Patients undergoing surgery may face a decline in quality of life, especially those who have co-morbidities or are older. Prehabilitation aims to prepare patients mentally and physically before surgery with exercise, nutrition and stress reduction. Whilst an optimal program is still under investigation, initial research has demonstrated the efficacy of prehabilitation, with patients requiring shorter hospital stays and having fewer post-operative complications.

In this podcast, Matthew Evison, MD, University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester, UK; Alastair Greystoke, PhD, MBChB, PhD, MRCP, University of Newcastle & Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Newcastle, UK; and Neal Navani, MA, MRCP, MSc, PhD, Care Quality Improvement Department, Royal College of Physicians, London, UK, discuss the most current advances in the field of lung cancer. Topics include prehabilitation in lung cancer care, the process of understanding a next-generation sequencing (NGS) report, and the increasing role of low dose CT scanning. This interview took place at the 20th Annual British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) Conference 2022.
