Prioritizing patients for breast cancer surgery during COVID-19 Aug 03, 2020
    Show notes

Patients with cancer consistently demonstrate poorer post-COVID-19 infection outcomes, and as a result of the pandemic, cancer services within the UK have shifted to protect patient survival. In the breast cancer field, the surgical management of primary breast cancer has also been affected, with many ER+ HER2- patients being deferred from surgery to neoadjuvant endocrine therapy due to safety concerns and resource availability. Therefore, the identification of primary breast cancer patients at greater need for surgical intervention is of great importance.

In this podcast, Peter Barry MBBS (Hons), MPhil, FRACS, Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, discusses a recent publication in npj Breast Cancer evaluating an evidence-based treatment algorithm designed to identify patients with post-menopausal primary ER+ HER2- breast cancer who should be prioritized for surgery or, based on ER and progesterone receptor status at diagnosis, be appropriate for neoadjuvant endocrine therapy.

This interview was recorded via an online conference call with The Video Journal of Oncology (VJOncology).

Genotyping in lung cancer and multi-cancer detection Jul 01, 2020
    Show notes

Using precision genotyping for identifying resistance mechanisms in advanced lung cancer can help guide treatment decisions and prolong the benefit of targeted therapy. Advancements in the use of circulating tumor cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has simplified this procedure to look for multiple mutations, although further tests are usually needed to confirm the mutation present.

The use of cfDNA has also been evaluated for the detection of multiple cancer types, and a recent publication in the Annals of Oncology showed that over 50 cancer subtypes can be successfully detected, paving the way for earlier detection, earlier treatment and potentially higher survival rates.

In this podcast, Geoffrey Oxnard, MD, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA, firstly discusses the use of liquid biopsy in genotyping for resistance mechanisms in lung cancer, the importance of genotyping patients upfront and some practical comments on sequencing of biopsies and treatment. Dr Oxnard also discusses the data from the multi-detection of cancers study.

This interview was recorded via an online conference call with The Video Journal of Oncology (VJOncology).

Molecular testing for lung cancer in the UK May 13, 2020
    Show notes

Molecular testing for lung cancer mutations plays an important role in the care of patients, by enabling quicker access to the most appropriate treatments. The guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellent (NICE) are clear on what molecular testing is required for patients in the England. However, although testing rates are high, further work is ongoing to improve this process.

In this podcast, Neal Navani, MA, MRCP, MSc, PhD, Care Quality Improvement Department, Royal College of Physicians, London, UK firstly discusses molecular testing in the UK, highlighting real-world evidence from the National Lung Cancer Audit. Next, Sanjay Popat, BSc, MBBS, FRCP, PhD, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, highlights the importance of molecular testing and the formation of the Genomic Laboratory Hubs (GLHs) in England, which will help to coordinate the national approach to providing molecular diagnostic tests for patients. Finally, Angela George, MB, ChB, FRACP, MD, the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, then reviews a paper she co-authored investigating next-generation sequencing (NGS) and single-gene testing for lung cancer testing, and how comprehensive genomic profiling aids patient care.

These interviews took place at the 18th British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) 2020 congress held in Dublin, UK.

Advancing immunotherapy for solid tumors Nov 23, 2018
    Show notes

Immunotherapy has the potential to treat all types of cancer, making it a highly lucrative area of research. Since the first FDA-approved immunotherapy for bladder cancer in 1990, the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin cancer vaccine, many more agents have arrived on the scene. A challenge in this field is not only finding the right therapeutic targets and optimizing efficacy, but also managing the immune-related side effects. In this podcast, our experts explore the use of immunotherapies in solid tumors.

James Spicer, FCRP, PhD, MRCP, MBBS, from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, Michael Pishvaian, MD, PhD, from Georgetown University, Washington, WA, Marina Garassino, MD, from the National Cancer Institute of Milan, Milan, Italy, Barbara Burtness, MD, from Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, Thomas Gajewski, MD, PhD, from the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center, Chicago, IL, Michel Sadelain, MD, PhD, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY, and Hans Hammer, MD, PhD, from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, TX, USA, discuss a range of topics, including recent advancements, molecular targets, the current and future landscapes of immunotherapy, including CAR T-cells, as well as some of the challenges associated with patient selection and the immunotherapeutic treatment of solid tumors. All interviews were recorded at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2018 Congress, in Munich, Germany.
