Top Ways to Manage Your Stress and Rage with Dr. Jennifer Mullan Aug 22, 2023
    Show notes

"In order to experience true joy, it also means that we have to experience this variety of emotions." This episode is a little different and was hosted with a studio audience in New York, NY at Brace Life Studio. Conversing with Dr. Jennifer Mullan, of Decolonizing Therapy at Triggered AF's first live event, The Evolve Experience, was life-altering. Dr. Jennifer helped us to begin to unpack the different ways to identify and release our rage. It is essential to acknowledge what is and be intentional about finding places and spaces where you can be revitalized.

Sometimes rage gets a bad rap. There are different layers of rage and acknowledging ways to rejuvenate yourself so that these past experiences are not controlling us is vital. Find ways to include compassion and grace within your life's experiences that may trigger rage. Learning how to release your rage in healthy ways helps you to remain in control.

    KEY POINTS:

    • Events like colonization and historical trauma have an impact on everything and everyone surrounding us. Most traumatic events are associated with these events. The lack of love and affection we all deserve is missing from our everyday lives. If a situation begins controlling you, remove yourself before it escalates.

    • When trauma happens it didn't just verbally happen, your body had a response and it keeps the score. And if it's keeping score it needs a way to release some of that pain in order for it to start to heal.

    • Anything related to trauma is like a mirror being held. And it requires people to self-reflect and not everyone is ready to look at things that are buried or are painful so it's important to meet people where they are.

    • Anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and illness manifests when we keep swallowing our emotions versus having a conversation or admitting we need help.

    QUOTABLES:

    • "Find ways to release rage in a healthy manner."

    • "We do better together than separated"

    • "The stigma of people thinking we're weak many times keeps us from seeking or asking for help."

    • "Don't only just stuck in what feels good or bypassing [your emotions] and jumping to what feels good."

Managing the Stress of Being a Stepparent with Jennie Guay Aug 08, 2023
    Show notes

In the "The Unspoken Stressors of Being a Stepparent" episode, children's book author, Jennie Guay, helps us break down the complexities of being a step-parent. Being intentional about creating healthy spaces as a step-parent is the basis of the relationship. Every parent and step-parent has their unique set of parenting tactics; however, all tactics must benefit and protect the child.

Having open discussions on the role you'll play and the dynamic of each parent is vitally important to the continued success of any step parent journey. Not only is communication important for all adults involved, but it is essential to create a space for the child to communicate their feelings.

Learning how to manage your frustrations connected to parenting starts with healthy communication. It's imperative to understand if you have trouble managing your own emotions, you will struggle as a stepparent. You will need to find ways and tools to manage your stress on a daily basis.

    SPONSORED BY:

Dating Well AF Course, visit to learn more: http://datingwellaf.com

    KEY POINTS:

    • Deciding what you agree "bad" parenting looks like is a great place to start when coming into agreement on parent styles with multiple parents. If you can get on the same page as to what you agree is bad, ensuring there are no negative implications on the children, then you can get on board with each other. If you all agree on the wrong way then that's a strong position to start from.
    • Identify the parenting methods that are not acceptable for your family unit, agree on those as a unit, and consistently reinforce those with your child(ren).

    • You cannot tell children what to think, but you can teach them how to think.

    • If you have trouble managing your own emotions, you will struggle as a stepparent. You will need to find ways and tools to manage your stress on a daily basis.

    • Knowing how to teach your child instead of telling them what to do will benefit them most in the future.

    QUOTABLES:

    • "There is no right way to parent, but there is a wrong way."

    • "It is important to allow children to have choices and avenues to communicate their feelings."

    • Children go on feeling, not just the title of mom and dad.
    • "You cannot tell children what to think, but you can teach them how to think."

    • "Sometimes our own coping mechanisms can work against the connection with our children."

    • "It can be challenging to be a better person for a child you may not have had otherwise."

How to Overcome the Hurt Experienced by Your Mother Aug 01, 2023
    Show notes

In the "Things My Mother Did Right" episode, your Triggered AF Podcast hosts explore how to overcome the hurt experienced by your mother. No one is perfect and mommy wounds - much like church hurt - can cut deep! Those childhood experiences can still affect our lives today. Some of us had some really crappy, mean, broken, and downright evil mothers … and still, there's something about them raising us that made us who we are.

This episode explores the gifts and the pain caused by our mothers and how shifting our perspective can bring about true healing. Figuring out how your childhood experiences are connected to your trauma helps you better understand how to make healthier choices. Your habits and cycles are inherited from your parents and those who raise us, but we get to decide how much of an effect they have on our lives.

    SPONSORED BY:

Dating Well AF Course, visit to learn more: http://datingwellaf.com

    KEY POINTS:

    • Understanding our mothers were simply women having a human experience helps us to remove our expectations and requirements to free ourselves from what we hoped they would be for and to us.

    • Apologizing to your children is an important part of parenting. Learning how to communicate with your child is an essential part of parenting. There's nothing wrong with seeking help from a therapist to guide you through traumatic experiences. Healing is a timeless journey.

    • Cultivate a community to reparent that inner child. So many of us are stuck at the place and in the stage where the trauma happened. Stop moving, living, and operating from a space that's not even who you really are. Don't condemn yourself to a life of misery. You can change.

    QUOTABLES:

    • "Slow progress is still progress."
    • "It is ok to acknowledge when you are wrong and apologize."
    • "Children pay more attention to what you do than what you say."
    • "If you have to isolate your mother or parents for your own sanity, do it from a place of power, not a place of pain, frustration, bitterness, and resentment."
    • "Check in with yourself to determine what type of boundaries you may need to put in place for your protection."
    • "Sometimes their reactions to you aren't solely about you. Sometimes that's just who they are."

S6 EP8: Overcoming church hurt and trauma with Pamela Merritt May 23, 2023
    Show notes

S6 EP8: Church and Trauma | Pamela Merritt

Skirts below the knee. No jewelry, accessories, or makeup. Stockings in bed and no relaxing your hair. Does this sound familiar?

For those raised in the church like Alechi, Dani, and their guest - religious trauma healer Pamela Merritt, this conversation is for you. Tune in as Pamela discusses church hurt versus trauma, how the Black community embodies religion, and the often confusing emotions around sex and religion. And be sure to lean in for her advice for reimagining your faith and reconnecting to the divine outside the church.

    KEY POINTS:

    • Why is church membership dramatically dropping?
    • Is the rise in community violence correlated with the lack of connection to spirituality?
    • Do we need the church to teach us accountability and structure?
    • The positive benefits of the church
    • What trauma looks like and how it's perpetuated from the pulpit
    • How to nourish your relationship with the divine outside of the church

    QUOTABLES:

"For black church kids, we embody the music. We embody the feel of church. We embody the culture. We embody the community that Black church gives us. So when people come to me for religious trauma, consultations, and they are transitioning, what I'm helping them with is understanding that their religious space does not determine the structure that they have to their life." - Pamela Merritt

"Once you understand who you are and what your needs are and what your beliefs are, you can reimagine your connection with the divine in a different way." - Pamela Merritt
