    Tribe of Testimonies

The Book of Mormon, a scripture of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, describes two peoples: Lamanites and Nephites. After a last great battle, the Nephites were destroyed from the face of the earth. The remnants of the Lamanites are among the ancestors of today’s North American Native Americans. Andrea Hales (Navajo), the host of Tribe of Testimonies, interviews faithful Native American Latter-day Saints of tribes across the U.S. and Canada to learn how the Gospel of Jesus Christ has influenced their lives. Everyone’s story is different—conversions, families, missions, educations, careers, talents, achievements, failures, trials. As we share our stories, maybe we can strengthen each other. May we all walk in beauty. // This podcast is not sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, we love the Church. Creation. Shiloh Mahgwees and I talk about creating all kinds of things in this episode. We talk creating families, educations, stories, art, love, bridges, and more. And we talk about The Creator, the One who knows us perfectly and loves us perfectly because He is perfect. Shiloh is so grateful for parents who have loved her fiercely even in their imperfections because she sees how they have given her so much. I love that about Shiloh because it helps me see perfection in those who love me.

    Chuck Kaye - Hopi Dec 28, 2022

This conversation was so delightful. I learned so much about Hopi. I loved learning a little about the parallels between Jesus and Satan and some of the Hopi traditions. I loved learning about titles that we use in our church: elder, brother, sister. I loved learning about a sacred family role we can all aspire: the legacy period of our life when we make truths and family history and family time priorities. I loved learning about how to fellowship and minister to others by just inviting and being available. It was a wonderful time on the phone with my new friend, Chuck Kaye.

Yes--it's me! Rachel Crouse (episode #46) interviews me. We talk about my family--both the one that I grew up with and the family I have now. We talk about one of the hardest things I've ever gone through--the first 18 months of my daughter's life. We talk about the ideal "tribe" to us. And we talk about covenants and coming closer to the Savior--even if it's only by looking up.

    Corey Smallcanyon - Navajo Dec 14, 2022

Another one of my BYU friends, Corey Smallcanyon definitely studied a different topic than I did. He has learned that even though history can be ugly or confusing, that the "basics" of the Gospel will always help through those murky questions and that having a witness about Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Book of Mormon will always keep us grounded. He basically challenges each of us to get our own testimonies because that will aid us through all parts of our life.

Linda Azure Big Day - Fort Peck Assiniboine Sioux & Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Dec 06, 2022

Linda Azure (way before becoming a Big Day) was raised by her grandmother. She learned from Grandmother how to pray and recognize blessings and direction from the Creator. As her life has progressed, she joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, attended BYU, earned multiple degrees, and became somewhat disassociated with the Church. Her church family and friends always just loved her. But she came to recognize that she was missing the whole that she knew was available to her. Since coming back to the Church, she has served in various callings, thriving because of temple service and charity. Hmmm: sounds like loving God and your fellow man--fulfilling the two great commandments.

Janice Clemmer - Wasco, Shawnee, & Delaware Nov 29, 2022

There's a part in our conversation where Janice Clemmer gives an analogy of life as preparing for an exam. This has been an analogy I have envisioned myself. She said that we work really hard in this life so that when the "test" comes, we'll be prepared for it. How do we prepare? She talks of associating with good people, of serving those around us, of learning to forgive, of working hard in all we aspire to, and of looking for the everyday miracles that we are blessed with. She shared how her good companions in life--friends and family at every stage of life--have helped her become a better person. And for those who don't, she has learned to not worry about them. So many snippets of good advice that we can all start practicing today.

One of my friends was feeling kind of down--so I retold Cynthia Connell's amazing stories to bring a smile to my friend's face. It totally worked. Actually, I can almost guarantee you're going to smile through these stories too. Really, her life should be a miniseries (a movie isn't enough time!). I laughed. I cried. I thought deep thoughts. Cynthia's story about feeling the power of a righteous home made my heart swell. I want that feeling in my own home for me, my family, and any guest who comes. Cynthia's story about finding her identity, I'm sure, is relatable in many ways to you and me. As always, I wish I had more time to visit. I'm sure I would have been edified. I hope you feel that as well.

Matthew Azure - Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Nov 15, 2022

Learning about how Matthew Azure's father influenced his life was wonderful. Truth is truth--whether or not you are a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Matt's father taught him so much truth and life wisdom that now it just seeps from Matt. Treat others with respect--whether you know them or not. Use the right tool for the job. And keep your commitments. These and many other life lessons Matt shares with us, along with a profound testimony of our Savior Jesus Christ. His testimony is his foundation from which all truth flows.

Anthony Rivera - Juaneño Band of Mission Indians Acjachemen Nation Nov 08, 2022

Doing hard things definitely gives a person confidence. Brother Anthony Rivera has done a lot of hard things, and you can feel his confidence. He is also very confident that the Book of Mormon is true. (I'm confident of that myself, by the way.) He has learned through testing it and through the language and structure of it. And he has learned that he can be confident in the Plan of Salvation because he continuously sees how it blesses his life. Anthony has stories that will fascinate you and humble you. And stories that will inspire you. I love his challenge to all of us at the end of this conversation where we should take at look at ourselves, our congregations, and the Church as a whole in how we are bringing to pass the promises foretold in the Book of Mormon.

This lady is a soul mate of mine! Well, except maybe for the fact that she wants to get a PhD in English. But she tries so hard to follow what the Spirit prompts her to do. And she loves to laugh. She's served as a Relief Society president for six years. Six! But she has come to love all the sisters that she serves and serves with. That is a blessing! She now recognizes something her grandmother taught her interaction after interaction--that we are all family. We are all children of God. We are all related. And that is a special thing to recognize. She wants to jump out of an airplane and she wants to meet the Prophet Joseph Smith. I get that! I'm so glad that I now count Melissa as one of my friends.
