    Tribe of Testimonies

The Book of Mormon, a scripture of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, describes two peoples: Lamanites and Nephites. After a last great battle, the Nephites were destroyed from the face of the earth. The remnants of the Lamanites are among the ancestors of today’s North American Native Americans. Andrea Hales (Navajo), the host of Tribe of Testimonies, interviews faithful Native American Latter-day Saints of tribes across the U.S. and Canada to learn how the Gospel of Jesus Christ has influenced their lives. Everyone’s story is different—conversions, families, missions, educations, careers, talents, achievements, failures, trials. As we share our stories, maybe we can strengthen each other. May we all walk in beauty. // This podcast is not sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, we love the Church. Becki & Brian Young - San Carlos Apache May 16, 2023
    Show notes

Most of this interview is Becki Young. She shares how she met her husband, Brian Young. Becki tells of how depression has been an invasive and permanent part of her life. But she also talks about how the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and those blessing that can be found in the Church, have helped her cope with this. Blessings like the Holy Ghost and the Book of Mormon. She talks about dreams and about helping to gather Israel by sharing her testimony and those things that are precious to her. She talks about how the Gospel has answered some questions she had about her previous church life and how The Church of Jesus Christ has filled holes and made her feel like Heavenly Father loves her. I'm so grateful for the time I had with the Youngs.

Nelson Deer - Pima, Maricopa, Kiowa, & Creek May 09, 2023
Show notes I love it when I learn new things in unexpected ways. I always plan on learning things from my guests, but sometimes I'm surprised at what I learn. This time I learned more about silence. Seriously--silence. Listen. And then be still after you hear what I heard. I also learned about remembering to take care of our promises with the Lord because He will then take care of us. I learned that the youth are watching the parents and leaders more than we might realize (as I'm both a parent and leader this certainly makes me feel good). And I learned that being led by the Holy Ghost can give you a rush that can't be felt in any other manner. Maybe that's the feeling we should all be seeking after. I'm so grateful for this time with Nelson Deer, a young man striving to be a valiant servant of the Lord.

Flora Shorten - San Carlos Apache May 03, 2023
    Show notes

As I visited with Flora Shorten, I couldn't help but notice how much power she has, how much power she uses, and how much power she shares. She uses power for herself to keep her safe and on the strait and narrow. She uses bless and protect her family. And she shares the power of the Gospel with everyone around her who is willing to accept it. What power? The enabling power of Christ. She knows Him. She knows that He loves her as His daughter. She knows that the power of keeping covenants is a complete blessing in itself. She wants the people in her sphere to enjoy and know these blessings for themselves as well. God bless this wonderful lady.

Goldlin Wall - Ute Mountain Ute & Navajo Apr 25, 2023
    Show notes

Sometimes I stumble over the questions that I'm trying to get out. That's pretty common for me. But I really feel like the questions that I asked were inspired this episode. "As you prepared a talk for high council, what talk or preparation really stood out to you?" And then Goldlin Wall tells this story that is personal for one person--but relatable for every single one of us about what we can carry and what we can accomplish. "What is something hard that you've been through?" Then Goldlin tells us about how people can judge without really knowing a person and how we each have the opportunity to make something of ourselves and of the situation and leave a good impression. Before we started we asked Heavenly Father to lead us in this conversation, and I'm certain He did.

Kevin Simmons - Grand Ronde & Muckleshoot Apr 18, 2023
    Show notes

This conversation with Kevin Simmons was so beautiful to me. In fact, we talk about beauty a few times, but especially at the end when we talk about the Tribe of Israel. Kevin shares how he didn't always have an easy-go with the melding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and his heritage--until he saw it! When it all came together for him, he knew it was true. And now he shares that with friends, with clients, with family, with everyone. Sometimes he uses words. But probably more often he lives it, like the wonderful influential people in his life lived their testimonies. It felt pretty special to be included in his list of answers for when he asked Heavenly Father what to do next. But it wasn't just me he was supposed to share his testimony with--it's you too.

Cherry Menard - Navajo & Lakota Sioux Apr 11, 2023
    Show notes

Think about how cool circles are. Now think about applying those to your life. We read in the scriptures that this life is one eternal round. What does that mean exactly? I don't know. But for a minute, Cherry Menard and I talk about what it might mean. It might mean being able to see across time to those before who are holding onto us here and now, and maybe being able to see across time and holding onto those who will come after us. Maybe we're all focusing on the Savior at the same time. Maybe we should be moving with one heart. Maybe as we move our circle's shape goes a little "uncircular." Maybe a goal is to make it that perfect wheel, with Jesus as the perfect center. Maybe. Maybe we can work on our part of the circle right now.

    Tianna Bettingson - Navajo Apr 04, 2023
    Show notes

I have this book called The Zookeeper's Secret. It talks about how most of us will look back on our lives and find that our "final" destination is almost never a straight line from point A to point B. Tianna Bettinson's life, even though she's still in a YSA ward, is already starting to look like an unexpected mess. She's learned that trusting in God means that He trusts in her. That's kind of big. It's huge, actually. Tianna recognizes that things won't always be perfect. Life isn't meant to be perfect. It isn't meant to always be happy. But it also isn't supposed to be miserable all the time either. Trust in God. Look for the joy. Stay on the strait and narrow path--but enjoy the meander.

Leslie Curtis - Laguna Pueblo Mar 28, 2023
    Show notes

This episode is shorter than most. But you will find that since Leslie Curtis lives her life with the Savior in mind that all the short vignettes she shares are powerful. It's amazing how she has remembered the names of so many people who directly influenced her life for the better. Did you know that your actions can be part of someone's life story? Let's hope our actions and words are worth remembering. I love that because Leslie was so diligently searching for her own witness of the truthfulness of the Gospel, that when she received it, she has focused her whole life on that answer. The answer is always Jesus!

Jason Boni - San Carlos Apache Mar 21, 2023
    Show notes

While I didn't say much in this conversation, Jason Boni just made me feel so good. He brought me into his family and into his life. He taught me about how to handle hard things and how not to handle hard things. And he taught me how to return to the Savior because the Savior is always there for us. Jason found humor in moments of high intensity. And he looked for the good people who were always helping him. I'm sure his light hasn't always shined like it does now--but he just glows. His spirit is one of joy and testimony. I hope you can feel all these same feelings.

    Norman Brown - Navajo Mar 14, 2023
    Show notes

This episode is so fun! Why? Because we get to talk about flying!!!!!! Ok, I really enjoy flying. But Norman Brown L.O.V.E.S flying! It isn't just a passion, it's a soul thing for him. He's learned so many things from his time as an airman in the Naval Air Force. He has learned patterns that help him remember the patterns we're taught by our church leaders. He has learned how to watch for and pay attention to the small stuff--and that helps him in personal relationships. He has learned to show love to so many people because his heart is full. I hope you enjoy this flight and coming closer to our Savior as much as I do.
