Episode 200 - Why We Love the Book of Mormon Dec 17, 2024

Woohoo! We made it to 200 episodes! I couldn't be happier with all the support and love shown over the past four years.
In this episode, I have invited four of my former guests to share hang out with me and talk about the Book of Mormon. We talk about how we first got our testimony of the Book of Mormon, some special experiences we've had, some questions we've had answered, and what we want our children to know about the Book of Mormon. This time together was beautiful and precious. We are happy to share this time with you and those you love.
My guests are Charity Fleming, Kwani Winder, Anthony Rivera, Franklin Keel, and Tom Pittman. We hope you feel like you are visiting with us as you might answer these questions in your own head or with your loved ones. And, perhaps you might even share your thoughts with us.

Dee Macdonald - Northern Cheyenne Dec 10, 2024

Dee was baptized as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when she was eight years old. Ever since then, she has looked for and found purpose in maintaining that membership. She has been so grateful to missionaries from her youth and missionaries she has served alongside as an adult. She reminds us of the story of the "dirty little Irish kid" and how she relates to that story so much--she's so grateful she was found. I think what I draw from Dee's story is tenacity, which she recognizes as strength from her own family tree. Dee is a wonderful example of being a believer.

Shon Baldwin - Wampanoag Dec 04, 2024

We talked multiple times about how each of us walk with Jesus Christ *individually*. Our life stories are all different. But they should all draw us closer to our Savior Jesus Christ and to our Heavenly Father. Shon shares about how he has drawn so close to his ancestors and has had his own testimony strengthened by their lives. That, to me, is why family history is so power. It gives us strength and it also makes life more meaningful. Shon has a beautiful story and you will feel uplifted by it.

Jenae Nelson - Bois Forte Band of Chippewa Nov 26, 2024

It was such a privilege to have Jenae Nelson come to my home. Jenae is a professor of psychology, so our conversation was definitely unique. Some of the best parts included her analogy of trying to expand our vision and see things like bees' eyes do. Are we looking through a tunnel, or are we looking with compound vision? There is always room to expand our vision. Another thing that really struck home was that she mentions how her relationship with Heavenly Father hasn't always been "good." In fact, there were many years when she didn't even believe that He could be real because of all the hard things she has gone through. But, now she says that she realizes she had to go through things so that He could help shape her character. There are truly so many good things to glean from Jenae in this episode!

Michele Reyes - Navajo Nov 19, 2024

Creativity is a gift of the Spirit. Teaching is another gift of the Spirit. Being able to make connections between concepts is a gift of the Spirit. Michele has been blessed with these gifts and a myriad of others. She uses these gifts in all aspects of her life--especially in parenting and serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Michele begins this conversation with sharing about how Hózhǫ́ means so much to her--and then she just ties that in through her thoughts as we talk about a variety of subjects. She is a beautiful mother in this part of the Lord's vineyard and sees that gift as one of the highest honors. It was really amazing to get to know Michele a little better, I'm so grateful for her example.

Leo Platero - Navajo Nov 14, 2024

I think artists look more carefully at the world around them. They see the beauty in landscapes, people, and experiences more clearly. Or with more reverence and appreciation for them. Leo Platero is awesome like that. He chose to join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Just like an artist purposely chooses colors to get a desired result, Leo has made decisions that have made his life beautiful and helped his family to make their lives beautiful. I even feel like the way Leo shared stories and testimony that he was choosing carefully how to paint the picture we are now privileged to listen to.

Shiloh Luper - Cherokee (Part 3 of 3) Nov 05, 2024

In this episode, Shiloh talks about all the blessings he has found by living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He sums up how his life has changed and how he is implementing the Gospel in his daily and weekly routines. He bears testimony again and again of the goodness of the Savior Jesus Christ.
I hope if you haven't yet listened to the first two episodes, that you will now go back and listen to them. This is a testimony that will probably stay with you for the rest of your life.

Shiloh Luper - Cherokee (Part 2 of 3) Oct 29, 2024

In this episode, Shiloh shares about how out of hand his addictions become. It spills into his family life big time. He shares, too, about how he didn't want to be there in the situation. He realizes how addiction has become an actual problem for not only himself but those around him. And then he shares about being ALONE. More empty and alone than he had ever, ever been. And then LIGHT happens. The best light and the best fulness.

Shiloh Luper - Cherokee (Part 1 of 3) Oct 22, 2024

In this episode, Shiloh talks about how he fondly first encountered The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He doesn't talk about a firm testimony of the Gospel, however, because he was only in it superficially. He talks about how his first wife was so kind to him, as was her family. He saw how a family who lives the Gospel looks and acts. But eventually, he ended up back on the outside of the Church. That, to me, is a good takeaway: that an easy in will often lead to an easy out. Because this episode sets up the next two episodes, you'll not want to miss this.

Kristina Begay - Navajo & Zuni Oct 15, 2024

Way back when I was an undergraduate student, Kristina and I danced together in a performing group. I admired her then. She's become an even more wonderful woman in the years since then. Her heart is with her Savior, her husband, her family, and those she serves in her community. She is a mother of five children, and a teacher to many. But she's humble enough to learn from everyone around her. One of her children has just left to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and his siblings are examples to Kristina of how to live a Christ-like life--and she cherishes that blessing. Probably my favorite part of the whole conversation, though, is the end when she talks about "belonging." It sums up all the tidbits we touch on throughout our time together. I hope you know that you "belong" too!

Jon Tolliver - Makah Oct 08, 2024

As a recent convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jon has found so many things that align between our teachings and practices and that of his Makah heritage. Especially the Potlatch. As he learns more about both, he wishes that his people could see that value in each. He feels like the traditional potlatch is going away--and wishes that he knew how to revive it. But he also sees that by learning the Gospel, he really is living a potlatch-life. He wishes he could share the Good News of Jesus Christ with everyone so everyone can live a potlatch-life!

Sonny LaFontaine - Navajo & Chippewa (Part 2 of 2) Oct 01, 2024

When Sonny returned from his mission, he wooed and married a good, strong woman. Sonny tried taking care of his body through exercise and weights--but that ended up in disaster. Of course, taking care of your body is good and healthy. But when Sonny got hurt lifting weights one day, the physician who should have been watching out and caring for Sonny gave bad advice and an addictive prescription. Sonny became an addict. This addiction went on to cause havoc in his and his family's lives. Add to that alcohol. Years of their lives have been marred by drugs, alcohol, and the lifestyle that accompanied. And then other poor life choices. Sonny is working on returning to the temple. He has achieved the restoration of his priesthood. But he is mending things that have been broken--and these will still take time. Thankfully, the Savior has all the time and all the grace and mercy needed.

Sonny LaFontaine - Navajo & Chippewa (Part 1 of 2) Sep 24, 2024

Sonny LaFontaine was loved as a child. He was raised by two loving parents and extended family. He had a particular affinity towards his maternal grandmother (Navajo). He learned through her passing, that Heavenly Father was aware of him and that the Plan we so often talk about as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true. Sonny is also a natural-born leader. This is a blessing and a curse, he has found. As a missionary, he used this gift in a negative manner--resulting in hard lessons. But those lessons also helped him grow up.
This interview was so long that I broke it into two parts. The second half will be posted next week.

Valerie Hosteenez - Navajo Sep 17, 2024

Life is not easy. It's not supposed to be. And some of the challenges we bring upon ourselves. Valerie has had challenges in her life that were from other people's decision. And she has also taken challenges, like major hikes. She is planning on hiking Mount Everest someday soon. How amazing will that be!?! She loves to volunteer. It adds to her simple life. She volunteers her talents, like photography and videography. And she just loves to be involved. Those kinds of challenges are fulfilling and sometimes exciting. She has learned to be grateful about all things in life, a quality worth emulating.

Maribeth Mills - Ute Mountain Ute & Northern Ute Sep 10, 2024

There is a part in this conversation when Maribeth talks about her time in the temple. She said that the temple became more precious to her through the following steps: (1) Just going. Just being there. Giving it time. (2) Listening to the ordinances. She said that it didn't make sense to her at first. But she listened anyway. (3) Then she started memorizing the ordinances. They became something she looked forward to reciting in her mind as she attended. (4) This is where she really began learning. She put the effort into learning more about what she was participating in. (5) Understanding the meaning. She says that she doesn't understand everything--but what she does understand has blessed her and has given her light and knowledge. I love this process she talks about. And she gives so many more tidbits of advice.

Harriet Whitmer - Cherokee Sep 04, 2024

Heavenly Father prepares us for different things. Harriet Whitmer was prepared for her educational career here and there. And then she was blessed by being willing to step into the Indian Education program in her community. She loved learning the children. She loved learning the people. She loved learning the history. She loved learning how things connected in her life. She was blessed by temple and family history opportunities as well. Harriet has learned so much about her family's history and the way it has made her who she is--though most importantly she is a child of God.

Bartley Harris - Saulteaux-Cree (Peguis First Nation) Aug 27, 2024

Recently we read and talked about the Stripling Warriors in the war chapters in the book of Alma. We talked about the parents, actually, more than the youth. Why? Because the parents were the ones that we are more like right now. We have the youth--but we're the parents. Bartley Harris talked about his sacred roles of husband and father and how those are so precious to him because his family is so precious to him. He loves them so dearly. We talk about some of his career moves--but always he saw how those opportunities and locations could teach, strengthen, and provide for his family. It was a wonderful conversation.

Gordon Limb - Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) Aug 20, 2024

It is definitely interesting how some people come to the careers that they do. I read a book by one of my MPA professors who described that process--it isn't a straight line. Gordon Limb's career has not followed a "straight line." But he has been led to do what he does now. During our conversation, he talks about how he's so grateful for the matriarchs in his line who have gone through so many hard things to bring him into this world and put him where he is now. I can feel that same emotion. He talks about how he has seen probably generational trauma manifest itself in his line and how he is working to combat the ill effects of that. It's pretty interesting. But, most importantly, he's trying to help people recognize their divine heritage of which we all share.

Gayle Toyebo Roulain - Kiowa Aug 13, 2024

The honesty and pure testimony that Gayle shares in this episode is real and powerful. She just talks about her relationships with family and how God has always been a part of those relationships. She talks about how she has used prayer for personal strength and to bless the lives of those she loves and served. Gayle talks matter-of-factly about how having the Holy Ghost in your life with strengthen you and me in these latter-days, just as our prophet has told us. There are just so many good things that Gayle shares; both she and I hope that many people will be able to listen and receive their own witness of the love of our Savior Jesus Christ through these words.

Tolani Francisco - Pueblo of Laguna Aug 06, 2024

Some people have incredibly fascinating stories. Tolani's story is fascinating. She started life without a birth certificate. She's ending life with multiple graduate degrees. There's a moment when she talks about how she's not always made the most perfect decisions--but has used the Atonement of Jesus Christ and second chances to refocus and redirect. I love that. I love that she is vulnerable enough to talk about how that blessing has affected her life. I also love how she talks with affection about some of the simple acts of service toward her: a clean cup of water for sacrament, a word of inclusion in a ward that didn't originally feel inclusive. I just sat back in awe at Tolani.

Nancy Bear Cloud - Apsáalooke (Crow), Gros Ventre, & Assiniboine Jul 30, 2024

Oh. My. Goodness! Nancy Bear Cloud is beaming! I'm the luckiest because I got to watch her face and eyes as she described her life and testified of Jesus Christ and the blessings found in the temple. She tells here about her life, about how it wasn't always rosy. She talks about trials of faith and of learning how to let go of past hurts and look for the lessons. She tells of praying over food at work (for work). It's kind of a funny story--but it's always a perfect description of how prayer and faith work to bring about miracles. Nancy is sitting outside while we visit and it's like I was there with her. It's like we're old friends now.

DaNae Elton - Navajo Jul 23, 2024

In so many ways, DaNae feels like a sister to me. We both grew up so loved by both sides of our families, but yet there was a cultural disconnect. Not an intentional or harmful disconnect, but more situational. At BYU, DaNae started looking more into who she was as a whole person, and that included spending time with relatives she had really only just spent holiday time with. Now she embraces more than ever who she is as a whole person. She loves her life and wants to share her identity as a child of God through her church life, work life, and social life. She wants to share her identity because she wants others to know they, too, are children of God and belong as they are. Don't forget--you are a child of God!

Doug Macdonald - Lakota & Assiniboine Jul 16, 2024

A while back, my great aunt sent me the names of two people she thought would be amazing guests. Well, finally, someone else convinced Brother Macdonald that he needed to share his testimony more often and more boldly. Doug said things during this conversation that had me really thinking--like about the last days before Christ returns to the land. Like about the purposes of the Indian Placement Program. Like how we can receive gifts of the Spirit that will change our lives and make us different people. I loved his soft-spoken demeanor and thoughtfulness. I loved that he considers meeting his wife a tender mercy of the Lord. I really felt connected with Brother Macdonald as he described things I have experienced in my own life.

Sylvia Miera-Fisk - Navajo, Pueblo, Yaqui Jul 09, 2024

As I'm always keeping an eye out for possible guests, I was shocked to find out we had a gubernatorial candidate who fits this podcast! Sylvia was so kind and interesting to visit with. She's smart and quick. She's well-spoken and thoughtful. It was nice to bask in the truths she was sharing about people, the Gospel, and common sense. It was fun to listen to her describe her Tabernacle Choir experiences. I wish I had asked her to play the piano for us. Her story sounds like a movie. But what I learned best, perhaps, was how she talked about how listening to or ignoring promptings from the Holy Ghost changed her life for the better or worse. It's something I'm working on every day. Sylvia has so much to share and I'm grateful for her and her life.

Priscilla Pearson - an Indian Placement Program Story Jul 02, 2024

There are some controversial topics surrounding The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of them is the Indian Placement Program. I happen to be particularly thankful for the Program. And so is Priscilla Pearson. I interviewed her during my first year of Tribe of Testimonies. But she has mentioned to me a few times how much gratitude she has for the Program and asked if she could tell her Placement Program story. Yes! Priscilla talks about the faith of her Navajo family to send her on the Program. She talks about the transition from Rez life to white-suburbia life. She talks about the differences in the three families she lived with. She talks about relationships that were forged as deeply as her blood relationships. And she talks about the blessing of learning to have a testimony of her own. I love this story time and I hope you do too.

Lance Morris - Assiniboine & Sioux Jun 26, 2024

Lance Morris has done much good in Indian Country. He has helped honor veterans. He has stood for rights to worship and live. But he says that the most important things to him are much closer. He says that the living the tenants of the Gospel of Jesus Christ are the most important--because he wants to live with those he loves for forever. He says being worthy of holding and using the Priesthood is incredibly important to him as he serves family, church family, and society. I loved when he said about his wife and her conversion: "So we can walk together." He talked about how some Native veterans made a decision to not stand separately from other veterans--and how this touched him. He didn't say it, but I think it made an impact on the way he sees and understands more than just veterans. There's really so much to say about Lance. I'm so grateful to now call him friend.

Bob Adams - Tlingit Jun 18, 2024

We didn't exactly follow the normal episode pattern. But that's okay. Bob taught us about how the history of his people has brought him where he is and makes him who he is. His ancestors and their stories really matter. And maybe we don't have a direct "link" with the stories in The Book of Mormon, those stories really matter and bring us as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where we are and who we are. I also loved his description of all the different ways songs have come to him and his family. Each song has its own story and influence. I think the analogy there is wonderful for each of us--that our "stories" can be influenced and completed through different means. It was wonderful to talk with Bob.

Blaine Goklish - Eastern Shoshone, White Mountain Apache, Blackfeet, & Pawnee Jun 11, 2024

This episode was recorded two weeks before Blaine was baptized and now uploaded after his baptism! I'm so happy for him!!! I wish I could have been there to witness his special day and to hug him! (Gee whiz, I'm using a lot of exclamation marks!) Things I particularly loved about this conversation include his honesty about how things are with his family--especially his mother. I love that he cares about her feelings, but also recognizes the vast importance of the baptism covenant. I love that he has studied it out in his mind and in his heart. I love that he is so excited about finding answers to questions, feelings, and promptings he has had. I just love that he was so excited to share his excitement with all of us.

JJ First Charger - Kainai (Blood Tribe), Blackfoot Confederacy Jun 04, 2024

There's a part in this conversation when JJ talks about feeling despair. I think that's why I needed to interview him. When have you felt despair? How did you respond to that? What caused it? What did you do to get out of it? I think it's important that we seek to move out of it ourselves first. Easier said than done, I know. But we have to have hope. We have to seek our Father and Savior. We have to have faith that They will respond. Because They will! I'm so grateful for JJ's life lessons. Now he seeks to share his testimony with his family and those who are willing to listen. I'm ever so grateful.

Kaika Cole - Kanienkeha (Mohawk) May 28, 2024

This episode doesn't "sound" right because I managed to turn my microphone off when I was adjusting the stand. But this episode sounds awesome in all wonderful things Kaika taught us. He loves his heritage because it brings him closer to our Savior, Jesus Christ. He finds joy in the simple pleasures and teachings of his heritage. And he finds joy in sharing that with others through dance, service, and friendship. I was so impressed with the way Kaika has been thoughtful about how he wants to share his talents with others. At one point, Kaika said, "There's a reason for everything." If I'm correct, he tries to use that perspective in his life to see Christ and the Plan laid out for him. I'm so grateful to call Kaika a friend now.

Lucille Hunt - Navajo & Comanche May 22, 2024

When she was a young lady, Lucille found the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She has been on fire with that testimony ever since! Even when she was called to serve a full-time proselyting mission right in her backyard! Her description of how she became and has remained a translator for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is so fun. I'm so glad that she gave us a little peek into the workings of the Church. I'm so glad that she shares her fire with us and I'm sure you'll be warmed through and through.

Samantha Begay-Bass - Navajo & Tewa Pueblo May 16, 2024

I really didn't know much about Samantha before we started visiting. But I'm so glad that we had this time to chat. She really sees the hand of God in her life--and I love that! She and her husband are a team in the goals that they have for their life. And she also recognizes that sometimes the plan you lay can change. Her love of her family and those relationships is a beautiful part of her life. I loved, too, the way she talks about the temple. Samantha has a deep love for her Father in Heaven and Savior Jesus Christ.

Dhanielle Declay - White Mountain Apache May 03, 2024

Dhanielle Declay reached out to me because her testimony is burning brightly. There are so many analogies with fire during this conversation. And there is the topic of a real-life fire that about took Dhanielle's life. She is a burn survivor. As she talked about the pain I could only imagine. She talks about angels who were with her on this side of the veil and those she's sure were helping on the other side of the veil. She talks about how specific experiences forged her into the tool she is in the Lord's Hands today. She talks about how that fire burns to get to the temple and to help family on the other side of the veil. She talks about how education is a fire that she continues to fan every day through her studies. Fire moves her, cleanses her, and lights her way.

Geoff & Akasha Balkman - Oglala Lakota / Yankton & Oglala Lakota Apr 23, 2024

Ah...where to begin with this one. Geoff and Akasha came to my house. And they didn't use a tissue once. You might need one though. This is a tough, tough story. They lost their son out of the blue. Their son just didn't wake up one day. The baby of their family. And I'm so sorry for their loss. I asked them after we recorded how they felt this loss compared to suddenly losing someone in a car accident or some other freak accident. The loss would be as sudden, but they pointed out that this loss doesn't leave them any one to blame--which is a burden they are glad to not have. Throughout this conversation, you will hear how they are seeking many ways to heal. But their best healing comes through seeking our Father in Heaven and our Savior Jesus Christ. They know that the covenants they have made in the temple are a strength to them and their other children. They know that one day they will have answers. Jacob Obioma - Navajo Apr 16, 2024

One of a kind. Literally. Jacob is Navajo and Nigerian. No siblings. He's one of a kind. But something else that I love about Jacob is that he has dedicated his life to sharing his love of Jesus Christ. He wants people to see Jesus through his actions, speech, and works. It's interesting how sometimes I some of my guests surprise me with how deep their testimonies really are. Jacob is that way for me. He sees Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ in such a way that I simply want to know Them more. I'm grateful for the time that we could spend together--you will probably feel the same as I do.

LaRue Willie - Navajo Apr 09, 2024

One of the first people that has sent me multiple emails is LaRue. She often sends me a note to tell me how much something someone said on Tribe of Testimonies has affected her. It's taken me a couple years to get her to agree to be a guest. I'm glad she finally accepted my invitation. She has a strong testimony. During the interview, she mentions that she hasn't always had a perfectly strong testimony. And then she talks about how she's continued to work on it. You could say that she's worked on her testimony "muscles" for years--strength training it. She's a good example of learning and relearning the basics of the Gospel. Like President Oaks just taught us at General Conference this past weekend: the basic doctrine of the Church is simple and can be tested. LaRue is a testament of the doctrine.

Ira Jones - Seneca Mar 26, 2024

In a few days from the posting of this episode, a full eclipse will pass over much of the United States. In this conversation, Ira explains a Seneca story about making promises of peace during an eclipse. He is planning on doing a similar pledge with his family and friends during the eclipse. I think that's beautiful! (I wish I could be there!) But Ira is seeking ways to mend hearts, to establish love and connection with people. It seems to be a life mission at the moment. Ira also talks about tithing--one of the commandments we have that has a promise attached. He can witness the law of tithing is a blessing. In fact, it helped him return to full activity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I'd say THAT is a blessing!

Joshua Freeman - Hopi Mar 26, 2024

The longer we talked, the more I appreciated the things Josh had to say about life and family. We talked a lot off the recording as well. There is just so much that I could appreciate about his experiences. Josh shares about some of his family's trials of mental and physical health--and the toll those have on his mental health. I can commiserate! Having to deal with others' mental health problems is a weight! But I love the ways that Josh and his wife work together to find a balance. I love the way they love their children as much as possible. I love the way Josh has found an outlet (running) that is soothing his soul and teaching him so much about Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, the earth, ancestors, and so much more. (I said he almost has me convince to start running.) This is a very vulnerable and amazing conversation. I'm so grateful for Joshua Freeman.

Tamera Wheeler - Anishinaabe from Sagkeeng First Nation & Navajo Mar 12, 2024

I remember when I was a student at BYU, I saw this sweet little girl dancing at the Harold A. Cedartree powwow. She was there pretty much every year that I was. Her name is Tamera Wheeler. So, I've seen her around for a long time. She told me that she remembers me coming to her house with my friend, Sommer, to get help making regalia. Tamera has grown up now. She's lovely. And she has experienced, firsthand, the blessings of our Savior in her life. There was a time when she stopped practicing the precepts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When she decided to come back, she saw how it really did bless her life. Now she weaves all parts of her life together in hopes of pleasing our Father in Heaven and our Savior. She sees how They love her unconditionally and want her to be with Them. Her testimony is pretty powerful.

Brighten Crawford-Martin - Assiniboine & Sioux Mar 12, 2024

About a year ago I reached out to Brighten to ask her to be a guest. It didn't work out, so I just left if. But recently I was scrolling through old messages and saw our open conversation and I reached out to her again. This time was the right time. A year ago it wasn't. This time Brighten was not only willing to share her story and testimony, but it's even stronger and brighter than it was a year ago. She has learned so much about her divine identity through family and making family (hunka). She has learned how to deal with depression. And she has learned how to witness, experience, and identify the Atonement of Jesus Christ in her life and in others' lives. Her testimony and story are so moving and bright! Just like she is. I'm so thankful that this was the time--I think you'll feel that as well.

Kalista Hill - Yankton & Lakota Mar 05, 2024

It feels like Kalista and I have a lot in common. We both grew up in eastern Utah. We both spent time in Washington, DC. We both have sought reconnection with our heritage. But there are a lot of things we don't have in common. I have not lived as many places as she. We are obviously from different tribes. The biggest common denominator, however, is that we both love Jesus, His Gospel, and know our divine heritage. It was fun to listen to Kalista talk about callings in different wards. It was motivating to listen to her passion to serve others. And it was humbling to learn of circumstances that I have been spared experiencing. There's a lot to learn from Kalista. Holy cow! This young lady is amazing. AH-MAZE-ING. I am so impressed with her testimony and her sweetness. She has lost a great many people in her life. She could choose to be bitter or hard. But instead she is sweet and soft. She is seeking our Savior Jesus Christ actively. She seeks to surround herself with people that live high standards and she seeks to love those who don't. Jada loves to connect with Heavenly Father through prayer and service. Her reservation branch doesn't have many active young people close to her age, but instead of griping about it, she listens to those older than her. There are so many good things about Jada. I only wish and pray the best for her.

Brother Mose was a cowboy. A bull rider, to be exact. Was. Until he got hurt. Since that injury, he's moved on with life. He doesn't do all the things that he once did. Now he does other things to improve his life and the life of those around him. He serves others. He has served as a branch president. He has served with the Boy Scouts. And he serves many, many people with the gift of family history work. It is definitely a gift of the Spirit for him. He feels drawn to it even when it isn't his assignment. His joyful demeanor was wonderful to be around. Someday I'll meet him and we can hug--because that's how I feel about him.

Some of the most powerful things that Marilyn Reed taught me were: meet people where they are (children or adults); when teaching, allow imperfection and give them the right tools and instructions; grow hope; and make connections with people, Mother Earth, and especially the Godhead. Marilyn has worked hard in all her pursuits. She has received a bachelor's and two master's degrees. And she has served in the communities in which she lives. But she also knows the power and influence of motherhood. She now serves in the Stake Relief Society and in her branch's Young Women. She is using those opportunities to love, testify, and strengthen those around her. Marilyn is doing good in this world and I want to be like that.

As I listened to Anne, I was struck with how much she LOVES family. She's a single woman. But she clings to family, including those by close blood relations, those of her Nation, those who love Jesus Christ, and those who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She started really regularly going to the temple because of the Catholic Pope. Seriously. She sees how The Book of Mormon can heal hearts, minds, and souls. She loves attending church and powwow--because both bring people together to worship our Creator. And she continues to strengthen her faith by practicing the formula we've been taught: ask a question, search for answers, and do the thing that she wonders about. It was a total joy to visit with Anne.

Cheryl McManus - Tobacco Plains Ktunaxa, aka Kootenay (BC, Canada) Jan 30, 2024

The spirit of Elijah is strong with Cheryl McManus. She has felt pulled to her ancestors--sometimes literally. She talks about experiences she has had with them and how their influence has been felt and blessed her life. Cheryl also talks about how, in some regards, she has felt lost because of how her mother was unable to live and cherish her own culture. That might be a lesson for all of us to learn: that where we come from and experiences we have really do matter for our own sake as well as our posterity. On the other hand, Cheryl praises her mother for her determination to move forward and to be strong. Strength is something Cheryl is proud to come from. I also love that Cheryl has a good sense of humor. A good chuckle is always worth it.

As I was listening to Sister Enas, I just kept thinking that she's doing a lot more good than she realizes. She's humble. She's kind. She's a good person to be around. I love her stories about how she came back to church and has slowly been immersing herself fully into the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She sees how the church helps us become better people and she's allowing that to happen to her. And now that she's feeling that, she is inviting other people to join her in her happiness. She has challenged us to read The Book of Mormon. AND she has challenged us to share a copy of The Book of Mormon with other people. I think I'll take that challenge!

Mondo Hand - Mescalero Apache & Chiricahua Apache Jan 16, 2024

Talking with a surfer dude was kind of fun. But he was also pretty inspiring. Mondo Hand really talked a lot about the Holy Ghost. He talked about how the Holy Ghost can help us in relationships. And he especially talked about how the Holy Ghost can help protect us. I loved that Mondo emphasized that we who have been baptized and confirmed members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been blessed with that constant Companion--it's up to us to listen to Him and heed Him. Mondo talked about how as mortals, we're bound to make mistakes. That's just part of this life. But we also have the Holy Ghost to help touch our hearts and help us repent and return to our Savior and Heavenly Father. I'm really grateful for this reminder today.

I've often talked about how, as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Native Americans, we have a different view than others. I have a different view than those who were raised "traditionally." And also, every tribe's "traditionally" is different. But as Carlos Reed and I talked about these things, it was very clear to me. We have been asked to leave cultural and traditional things "behind," but not those that add to the Gospel and not those that bring us closer to Jesus Christ. Carlos experienced those things personally and has witnessed those things with family and friends. His testimony is strong. And he seeks to bring others to Christ. Because of these experiences, he's seen how to be a good missionary and become a good missionary.

I think I'm going to tell the missionaries I'm no longer interested.... Well, that's didn't happen. The Holy Ghost told Sister Pam to go to church with those young missionary sisters. I'm glad she did go to church with them. Pam's spirit is so sweet and beautiful. I love at the end when she talks about what she feels as a member of the Tribe of Israel: that she's a daughter of God, that it helps her know that she can be with those she loves who have left this earth life, and that she gets to go Home one day and have all her questions answered. Maybe you have questions too. That's okay! Pam has learned that it's okay to have questions but to press forward with faith, trusting that Heavenly Father, our Savior, and the Holy Ghost are always there for her. I could just hug her!

This conversation was fun for me because Ann Marie asked me a question. And then we talked about it a bunch. What was the question? She asked me about how I hear the Holy Ghost. She has heard the Holy Ghost at three pivotal times in her life and has been grateful she followed those promptings. We talked about how other people have listened to promptings of the Holy Ghost and those promptings have affected her as well. Being willing vessels to do the work we're called to do is a true blessing. I think words of wisdom from General Conference have truly improved and blessed her life. She talks about a couple specific things, but I can tell it's more than she mentions. I'm so grateful for Ann Marie.

It was super fun to get to interview someone I only slightly knew before. Debbie Blackburn has spent most of her married life in the same little town I grew up in. She was a fixture of my youth because I always saw her driving a school bus. But learning about her history and about her struggles and blessings has given me a whole new appreciation for this woman. She talks about her conversion story--about the kind neighbors who shared not only sugar but the Gospel of Jesus Christ with her. They taught her and answered her questions using the Holy Bible. I don't know the couple that helped her learn, but I think they are the kind of people I want to be. They have impacted her life for generations to come. And Debbie finds strength in her family heritage of strong and resilient people. This was an excellent conversation.

He's a gem. I found a gem! Levi Esquerra has been polished and now shines. He attributes a lot of his success to his mother, to other good people in his life, and of course to the Savior. He's been able to get a great education and then use that to benefit others. He served, for a season, his tribe as tribal chairman. Now he serves in a public university shining light on other peoples. He has learned how to incorporate Gospel principles and practices into his career and relationships. His ability to listen to people has become one of his greatest assets. And, I definitely think, his general demeanor has opened doors for him, for his university and career, and for missionary experiences.

This conversation was so fun! We laughed much. Mostly at ourselves. We talked about how we are each needed in God's plan. Remember in the New Testament how we're each a different part of the body? Yes. We are also all important spokes in a wheel moving toward God's kingdom. Levi Heperi talks about how even as he has moved forward in life without knowing a specific goal, as he has put his trust in the Lord and moved, he has been blessed with opportunities. Now he's taking those opportunities to try and bless the lives of God's children. It was delightful to talk about how he is fulfilling his calling in less-than-orthodox ways. Maybe "orthodox" is really akin to "Law of Moses" level. So many things to chew on with our conversation. I think you're going to find something to grin about.

So many of us have learning curves--not just speaking about formal education. We have learning curves where we learn to treat people better, where we learn to value things better, and where we understand life better. Austin Lynn is going through learning curves some of us will go through differently. He's learning about his past. He's learning about the people who move in and out of his ward. He's learning about family and priorities. As he studies to become a therapist, he also sees the value of these life lessons as he one day will help others come to conclusions about things they are learning. It's a blessing. He's also learning about what is important to share with future generations. May we all come a little closer as we learn our own life lessons.

The testimony Lottie Orcutt shares about responsibility and trust is amazing. She really knows that Jesus Christ, through His Atonement in our behalf, is The Answer. The answer to what? Like, pretty much everything. The attacks on the family. The relationships are confusing. The health challenges we face. The questions people have about the Gospel. Pretty much everything can be summed up or modeled by Jesus Christ if we have trust in Him and in His Plan. Lottie has learned this. Lottie has also learned that Heavenly Father sends her messages and messengers in dream. It's a gift of the Spirit. That gift has prepared her and has carried her and has calmed her. The testimony is strong with this one!

Ty Yellowman - Navajo Oct 17, 2023

Ty Yellowman is at a turning point in his life. He's about ready to graduate from college. But he has already had enough experiences that he recognizes how blessed he is. He has wonderful people in his life, including his parents, institute leaders, and church leaders. He served a mission where he learned time management skills as well as spiritual skills. He has seen how scriptures can be likened to him. And he has witnessed the priesthood in action. He knows that as he moves forward, if he trusts in our Father in Heaven, he can be led and have prayers answered. This is faith--using what you know and hope for, and then going and doing.

Growing up in a teeeeeeeeny tiny Utah town has its benefits. One of those is that when you finally get yourself to the temple after a tumultuous youth, there will inevitably be loved ones there welcoming you. People who knew you when you were a rough stone. People who saw the gem in you. Lemikki Westlund was one of those rough stones. But now she holds fast to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She has had so many personal witnesses in so many aspects of her life that she knows who she is--both by mortal blood as well as her spiritual heritage. She holds fast to her heritage. She holds fast to her parents. She holds fast to the scriptures. She holds fast to her husband and her children. She holds fast to our Savior, Jesus Christ. She knows that all the imperfections of this world can be perfected through Him.

Daniel Nehring - Monacan Indian Nation of Virginia Oct 03, 2023

As we prepared for the Utah Gathering of Tribes, my friend and I put a few signs up in a couple locations. One of those locations was at the Trading Post in West Valley, Utah. Daniel Nehring doesn't frequently shop there. But, the day before the Gathering, Daniel was out and about doing some errands. As he was heading home, a very distinct prompting told him to stop at the Trading Post--no particular reason why. He called his wife and told her he'd be home a few minutes later. As he entered the Trading Post, the signs we had put up caught his attention. His heart immediately knew that the reason he was supposed to stop there was so he could connect with us, fellow Native American members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I felt connected to him as he introduced himself. And I feel connected to him as he describes his love for our Savior, Jesus Christ. Daniel continues to try to serve our Lord through word and deed. Once upon a time, this sweet family wanted to upgrade their house to a little larger house. They had been working toward this goal for a long time. They prayed to Heavenly Father to help them find the right house. He told them it was in Utah! Whaaaat!?! Yes. So this sweet family moved from Mesa, Arizona, to Utah. And they have found peace and blessings along the way. Amy Fa'atoafe has been trying to live where Heavenly Father can use her as a blessing to others. She has served in various social service positions. She sees how the blessing of the Gospel has kept her safe and provided answers when she has needed it. She is aware of the gifts that Heavenly Father has given her, and by knowing her gifts, she is able in turn to bless others. She has learned that doing right eventually has its reward. I'm so grateful for Amy's living testimony.

It's so awesome how when you go into a conversation with an open mind you can learn so many new things. And it's also amazing how you can find commonalities. I knew hardly anything about Chris, but those good things happened for me. Persistence was a word that Chris uses to describe his son. But I could tell from some of his own stories that he was already practicing that virtue. He talked with respect about his father and I could tell that his own children respect him for his efforts. He talked about dreams and goals. I could tell that he is slowly working on them. And he talked about enjoying life. Boy, that part of our conversation really struck me as an important word. "Enjoy." Heavenly Father really does want us to find joy. And his definition of "joy" is amazing: so much happiness that it is spilling out of you.

Sky is a son, a brother, a spouse, a father. He talks about each of these roles with so much love and devotion. In all, he talks with gratitude. I love how we can talk about doctrine and conjecture with reason. I love how we could talk about vision. Sky has been blessed with a willing heart. He recognizes that as he learns about what is in store for those he loves, he is also tasting what Heavenly Father has in store for him. He talks of his daughter's future, of his brother's destiny, and of the things he knows he can learn from his grandparents and other ancestors. And we talk about not always fitting in with others, but always fitting in with the Lord and His plan for us.

Growing up where I did, there were just a few other Navajos around. Joleen's family was one. I wanted to be like Joleen from the time I met her. She has always chosen to be kind, to love people, and to let the Light of Christ radiate from her. She's a single mother now, but that hasn't held her back. She has worked hard to be able to provide for her daughters. She has worked hard to get a degree and get a stable job. She has worked hard at teaching her daughters to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I love her stories of her grandparents. One of her super fans asked me to interview her. I'm so glad it was the right time to do it. As I listened, my heart was happy, was excited, was nervous, was pondering, and was sorrowful. But my heart always swung back around to joy as she pointed out the great many blessings and miracles that she is able to stand and witness of--especially that of our relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

There has already been a point in Leslie's life where she questioned her faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It's probably hard in a daily environment where people don't want to talk about religion, where people put religion down, or where you are reminded again and again of un-Christlike uses of religion. But, with encouragement and an invitation, Leslie prayed and studied about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints--and especially about Jesus Christ Himself--and realized that she does want this to be part of her life. She has a testimony of The Book of Mormon. And more importantly, she knows that Jesus Christ loves her individually and that He is helping her. Her faith continues to grow as she shares her testimony, as she seeks understanding, and as she attends church and the temple. I loved her perspective on faith.

Ah-in-nist Sipes - Cheyenne & Caddo Aug 22, 2023

When Ah-in-nist Sipes decided to really find out if The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was true, he came with three questions. First, what is the real doctrine--if any--about the color of skin? Second, how does being a believing Cheyenne work with the teachings of the Church? Third, who really is Jesus Christ? Ah-in-nist describes how he found the answers to each of these questions. I love his journey. And he calls it that: a journey. He didn't just happen to stumble on the answers all in one day. He sought them out carefully, prayerfully, and diligently. Now he knows that being Cheyenne is exactly who he's supposed to be, who our Creator intended him to be, and who can do good in the world because he is. I love the way he talks about his parents, his siblings, his grandparents, his tribe, and his ancestors with great love and respect. This conversation is amazing.

Mylo Fowler is a famous photographer. I wish we had time to hear more of his story. But I want you to hear how gratitude and stewardship led to more light in his life. Light now directs his life. Light leads his life through photography as well as his spiritual growth. Light. Don't block the light. Pay your tithing so heaven can shine its light down. Listen to the Spirit because you'll find even more light. So good! I love his relationship with his family, both blood and "adoptive." He's been blessed with so many people who opened their arms to him and who loved him just because that's what they do. I, too, want to be like that. Those people have shown him what it means to "belong." We belong together in the House of Israel.

I don't know about you--but I have some theories about the Church, about some of the scriptures, and maybe even doctrine. But they're just theories. Ralph Murrietta had some theories about Jesus Christ before Ralph joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He presented them as a college student in a public speaking class. Because he was brave enough to do that, one of his teachers was brave enough to share a special book with him. It changed so many things in his life. He's always been a spiritual person, but the missing parts that the Gospel filled in his life have made him more satisfied and closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. I love how he meshes the Gospel with the teachings of his heritage through prayer and pondering.

Two things stood out to me about this conversation with Jeff. First--he literally found happiness while he was studying The Book of Mormon. He was in a deep despair when he remembered some advice he has learned again and again as a child. He took that challenge and read The Book of Mormon and found a happiness he had been looking for. Second--he has a strong testimony of the Atonement, which is the ultimate expression of Love from our Savior Jesus Christ. Jeff has used the Atonement in his life and found that connection with our Savior and testifies of it. I'm really glad for all the things we talked about, but those stuck out to me. As I was visiting with Mario Platero, I was struck by his great humility. Humility doesn't always mean shy. In fact, it definitely doesn't. It means knowing that the blessings we have come from hard work, from love of and for others, and from Heavenly Father. Mario talks about how his callings, both at church and in his career, have blessed him. One of my favorite things is that he said that he loves his wife even more because of serving as a bishop. Yah, I love that. Another thing I love is that he calls The Book of Mormon and anchor in his life. In his humility, he also shares that he doesn't know everything--which means he relies on faith. At the end of the conversation, I love his advice for making decisions. Listen and hear what he has to say!

Listening to Charles Knife Chief talk about both the good and the bad about his tribe's history, and then later mentioning the good and the bad about other things in his life just made me think about what we learn in The Book of Mormon. There is supposed to be opposition in all things so that we may know the difference. It isn't supposed to be easy here all the time. He also talked about finding someone who was dear to his heart. He had to search for him and do all that he could--and then Heavenly Father literally made their paths cross. There is purpose in so many things that happen to us here. Brother Knife Chief also talks about having an eternal perspective and how that helps him make sense of the world that we live in today. So many good things to think about and apply here and now.

This lady is a powerhouse! She talks about so many people who have been good to her and for her. She talks about them being powerful in her life in a variety of ways. I think she must be good at taking the good from people and incorporating it into the way she lives her life. She recognizes that paths cross for a reason. She knows that Heavenly Father gave her an Indigenous heritage because those strong traits--especially endurance--are a benefit to her and her posterity. She also sees that Heavenly Father placed her in the places that she did so she can learn things to help her grow. What advice does she have for us? Go to the temple. Listen to the Holy Ghost. Treat others kindly. And walk toward our Savior.

I had this episode in my pocket for a while because my June was super busy. So as I relistened to all the things Ken Shields shared, I was humbled again. He, like our Apostles and Prophets today, is old and therefore can see things better. He can see the value of the lessons his parents taught him. He can see that holding on the Gospel of Jesus Christ is hard but worth it. He can see that the Holy Ghost really is real. He can see the fruits of the Priesthood. He can see that being poor of worldly wealth is okay because it keeps you humble. He can see that we each have the potential to see Jesus Christ. His testimony is powerful. I'm grateful for Brother Shields!

Al Frank - Nez Perce & Klamath Jun 27, 2023

Humility seems like an attribute Al Frank has, whether he agrees or not. It could be circumstantial, or it might be because he's worked on it. Or both. Maybe there are other reasons as well. He wasn't raised as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But when he was shown the blessings that he could have by joining, he knew it was what he had been looking for. And it was easy because he'd already made some personal commitments to live a higher standard than the average Joe. He has served in some callings that he never expected he would. But those callings have also grown his testimony and his relationship with our Savior Jesus Christ. He loves his family and wants them to enjoy the blessings of the Gospel. And now he's trying to help his congregation share their blessings with others. I love how the goodness of the Gospel can just snowball.

Geneva Garner - Navajo Jun 20, 2023

The Ten Commandments are foundational to our society, whether or not people recognize it. Geneva Garner's grandmother certainly knew the value of teaching her family about living by those rules. She knew that her children and grandchildren would find strength, satisfaction, and safety living that way. Geneva realizes now how much she funnels those teachings from her grandmother. As a convert, Geneva was excited to find life answers through the things her friend and the missionaries taught her. She saw the answers for questions she had as well as questions she didn't realize she had. I love how Geneva was so happy to share her testimony of identity and gathering. We can learn so much from her and the life lessons she has learned through effort and experience.

When I first talked with Gary John, we were in a noisy room celebrating a wedding. But he was just as excited to talk to me as I was to meet him. He loves to share his testimony. He loves to help the youth. He loves to spread the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He loves to teach people about the basics because he has seen how the basics (faith, prayer, testimony, church attendance, scriptures) have blessed his life and other people's lives. He is unashamed of our Savior Jesus Christ. He wants to badly for all of us to return to our Heavenly Father together. He also recognizes and honors the right to choose for ourselves: agency. It's the Plan. I loved visiting with Gary because he has so much enthusiasm. I hope you enjoy this time like I did.

As I sat and listened to Mary Kaquitts about her history, I was so thankful that the Gospel found her. I can't imagine being plagued with demons--and for years! But I am thankful that gospel music and natural healing has brought her peace. I love how she talks about just finding revelation after revelation while studying the scriptures and living the Gospel. I love her story about taking her daughter's name to the temple and being able to feel her daughter close. I love that she finds the Gospel in the traditional teachings of her community. And I love that she loves Jesus Christ and wants to share Him with everyone. I'm grateful for her testimony and her witness.

There are some people that are really good at seeing the good in others. Patt Iron Cloud is like that--she sees people as angels sent from God and it's up to us to learn to love them and treat them with respect. Wow. Sometimes I forget that. Patt has raised so many children and has taught them to be close to the Savior. She taught her children and teaches anyone in her influence how to ask Heavenly Father for help, how to listen to the Holy Ghost, and how to be close to our Savior, Jesus Christ. She knows so many of the hardships in this life are just in this life and that because we have a Savior, we can look forward. Honestly, Patt glowed while I talked to her. Glowed I tell you! She doesn't hide her light under a bushel and for that I am thankful.

Some people hold their relationship with Jesus Christ close to their heart and only share it with some people in certain moments. That's ok. Elizabeth Tolliver, on the other hand, shouts her love for Jesus Christ on the rooftops (figuratively speaking)! She has come to know Him so deeply that she wants everyone to feel the same kind of love. This relationship has come through using the Atonement personally, through testing Gospel principles by living them, and by recognizing Jesus through His servants who love and serve her. She knows the difference in her life and heart when she lives the standards of the Gospel compared to living like the world. This is raw and so good! Thanks Elizabeth.

Most of this interview is Becki Young. She shares how she met her husband, Brian Young. Becki tells of how depression has been an invasive and permanent part of her life. But she also talks about how the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and those blessing that can be found in the Church, have helped her cope with this. Blessings like the Holy Ghost and the Book of Mormon. She talks about dreams and about helping to gather Israel by sharing her testimony and those things that are precious to her. She talks about how the Gospel has answered some questions she had about her previous church life and how The Church of Jesus Christ has filled holes and made her feel like Heavenly Father loves her. I'm so grateful for the time I had with the Youngs.

I love it when I learn new things in unexpected ways. I always plan on learning things from my guests, but sometimes I'm surprised at what I learn. This time I learned more about silence. Seriously--silence. Listen. And then be still after you hear what I heard. I also learned about remembering to take care of our promises with the Lord because He will then take care of us. I learned that the youth are watching the parents and leaders more than we might realize (as I'm both a parent and leader this certainly makes me feel good). And I learned that being led by the Holy Ghost can give you a rush that can't be felt in any other manner. Maybe that's the feeling we should all be seeking after. I'm so grateful for this time with Nelson Deer, a young man striving to be a valiant servant of the Lord.

As I visited with Flora Shorten, I couldn't help but notice how much power she has, how much power she uses, and how much power she shares. She uses power for herself to keep her safe and on the strait and narrow. She uses bless and protect her family. And she shares the power of the Gospel with everyone around her who is willing to accept it. What power? The enabling power of Christ. She knows Him. She knows that He loves her as His daughter. She knows that the power of keeping covenants is a complete blessing in itself. She wants the people in her sphere to enjoy and know these blessings for themselves as well. Then Goldlin tells us about how people can judge without really knowing a person and how we each have the opportunity to make something of ourselves and of the situation and leave a good impression. It felt pretty special to be included in his list of answers for when he asked Heavenly Father what to do next. But it wasn't just me he was supposed to share his testimony with--it's you too.

Think about how cool circles are. Now think about applying those to your life. We read in the scriptures that this life is one eternal round. What does that mean exactly? I don't know. But for a minute, Cherry Menard and I talk about what it might mean. It might mean being able to see across time to those before who are holding onto us here and now, and maybe being able to see across time and holding onto those who will come after us. Maybe we're all focusing on the Savior at the same time. Maybe we should be moving with one heart. Maybe as we move our circle's shape goes a little "uncircular." Maybe a goal is to make it that perfect wheel, with Jesus as the perfect center. Maybe. Maybe we can work on our part of the circle right now.

I have this book called The Zookeeper's Secret. It talks about how most of us will look back on our lives and find that our "final" destination is almost never a straight line from point A to point B. Tianna Bettinson's life, even though she's still in a YSA ward, is already starting to look like an unexpected mess. She's learned that trusting in God means that He trusts in her. That's kind of big. It's huge, actually. Tianna recognizes that things won't always be perfect. Life isn't meant to be perfect. It isn't meant to always be happy. But it also isn't supposed to be miserable all the time either. Trust in God. Look for the joy. Stay on the strait and narrow path--but enjoy the meander.

This episode is shorter than most. But you will find that since Leslie Curtis lives her life with the Savior in mind that all the short vignettes she shares are powerful. It's amazing how she has remembered the names of so many people who directly influenced her life for the better. Did you know that your actions can be part of someone's life story? Let's hope our actions and words are worth remembering. I love that because Leslie was so diligently searching for her own witness of the truthfulness of the Gospel, that when she received it, she has focused her whole life on that answer. The answer is always Jesus!

He taught me about how to handle hard things and how not to handle hard things. And he taught me how to return to the Savior because the Savior is always there for us. Jason found humor in moments of high intensity. And he looked for the good people who were always helping him. I'm sure his light hasn't always shined like it does now--but he just glows. His spirit is one of joy and testimony. I hope you can feel all these same feelings.

He has learned how to watch for and pay attention to the small stuff--and that helps him in personal relationships. He has learned to show love to so many people because his heart is full. Curtis Walker starts our conversation by telling about the four "Hills of Life." I really saw meaning in those "hills." In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the top leaders are all old. They have all reached an ultimate hill of life and so can give us more perspective and are closer to God. Curtis also tells about how his own parents had summited those hills and because of their journeys were able to teach him with love and wisdom. Curtis's own testimony may have just started because he wanted to be around good people, but he did the work and continues to do the work that keeps him closer to our Savior Jesus Christ. There's a lot of wisdom and truth packed into these minutes together. I hope you can find gems for yourself as well.

During our conversation, Dwight Witherspoon was pretty honest about how being human is hard sometimes. (Dang "natural man.") But I loved how he learned to give those challenges to the Savior. He's learned to look for the small miracles and the big gifts. He knows the blessing of the Holy Ghost because he has been guided by Him--and even given pure knowledge of situations through Him. He has tested tithing again and again and found that the Lord always makes up that difference. And Dwight's testimony about families and the eternal scope of Heavenly Father's plan is beautiful.

He came back. That's Jarom Harlan's story. He came back to the Gospel of Jesus Christ because it changed him from the inside out. He's tested the waters both out of the Church and tested the promises in the Church. He's found safety and strength and family and purpose by living the Gospel. My favorite part of his story is when a Navajo man stopped by his apartment and invited him to church. A Navajo man whom Jarom had never, ever met in this life. Heavenly Father and Jesus sure love to bless us with people at the right time and place if we're willing to open that door. Now Jarom is seeking to pay it forward to anyone else he can.

Something that Cheryl Curry emphasizes over and over is that we need to connect with our Creator, our Father. That is something that I, too, have been worrying about. Cheryl talks about how when we eliminate God from our lives, we lose connection with all the things that make us whole: our divine heritage, why we're here, how we can become better, and how to love purely. Cheryl has learned by experience that she needs to follow the promptings Heavenly Father puts into her mind and her heart. She's learned that when she does, she will have the power to accomplish all that she's asked to do. Now Heavenly Father is leading her to help other people in their reconnection with Him and who they truly are. It's beautiful.

Who better than someone who loves their heritage, loves people, and doesn't mind getting their hands dirty to serve and stand for and with her people as an emissary of the White Mountain Apache Tribe than Shasta Hampton? Possibly no one. I loved so deeply how Shasta sought advice from the missionaries on how to talk to people. They encouraged her to pray. Of course! I loved that she talks about prayer in about six different ways in this short interview. Unless I'm mistaken, she definitely has a connection with our Heavenly Father because she uses prayer. She uses prayer to prepare, to calm, to seek answers, to show gratitude, to connect, and to make decisions. So good!

Something that Janell Murphy told me is that she's a healer. I think she's come from broken places enough and that she's sought out healers and healing enough that she has learned that gift of the spirit. She seems to walk in harmony with the world around her. She's learned that doing so brings her closer to our Savior. And by becoming closer to the Savior, she is more in harmony with the world. It's a beautiful circle of healing and growth. If you listen closely enough, you can learn how to strengthen and grow your faith. I loved that about our conversation, she was teaching me so much. Shania Benally and I talk a little bit about this video and about the analogy that it represents. Shania explains how as she dances in powwows, she always does better when she just feels the drum. And then we talked about how just feeling the Spirit and the Savior lead and guide us always makes our lives more beautiful, meaningful, and successful. We talk about how the Gospel in its simplest form is the way back to the Savior. Shania has been home from her mission for a couple years, but her mission has given her strength and direction in her everyday life. Shania is a good example of how letting the music of the Gospel continue to bless and guide her life.

She wanted to know if Priesthood blessings are really conduits of Heavenly Father's power. She shares snippets of how she found these things out for herself in this wonderful conversation. And as she has asked important questions about these things, she has also found time to improve her temporal existence. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what Heavenly Father wants us to do because He is willing to help us in all things.

Score! Gary Rogers was the man I met. He and our family "bumped" into him four different times in one day. I don't know if you believe in signs--but I do. I felt that Heavenly Father, at the minimum, wanted us to be friends. So, here we are in conversation for you to eavesdrop on. Gary has led a very interesting life. We barely scratched the surface. There have been so many times when she has just put her faith in Heavenly Father and given Him her will. Countless blessings have come because she's practiced this. She's been led with family decisions, career decisions, and church decisions. We laughed together as she described the unusual circumstances that led to her current marriage. We sighed together as we talked about traumas in the world and how we can help prevent more. We commiserated on unusual church callings we've received. Not everyone has full support when they join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Benjamin Lee had partial support. That was enough, though, for him to not only join but to also become a missionary. He thanks his parents and grandparents for teaching him to be true to the truths he has learned and to live the good values we preach in our Gospel. He also is able to see the connections and reminders in the Navajo culture of the blessings of the Gospel. I think all our lives would be blessed if we were willing and able to see the little reminders the Lord has put in our days to look to Him.

How are you doing the Lord's missionary work? If you've served a mission--how does that continue to bless your life and/or how does that play on your thoughts each day? It's great to think about. When I reached out to Junior Pinto about possibly being a guest, he said, "Let me pray about this.... I knew this day was coming but didn’t think it would be this soon." His connection with Heavenly Father and our Savior is profound and wide open. President Nelson and pretty much every prophet before has promised us that we can have that connection if we feed our faith and commune with intent. I loved, how without prompting, Junior ended our conversation--his testimony--in the holy name of Jesus Christ. We don't always have to use the words to do it, but I definitely think it's more powerful when we do acknowledge Him. In other words, Junior's words were very powerful to me and I am so grateful to be another witness to this joyful expression.

One of the gifts of the Spirit that I never thought about until someone pointed it out to me is "being vulnerable." Yah, yah, I know there's this whole vulnerable thing that a famous Ms. Brown talks about. But actually being vulnerable is an act of courage, and in Cindy Quinney's case, an act of love for the Savior. She talks multiple times about different ways she has learned vulnerability. The thought just came to me that vulnerability = a broken heart and a contrite spirit. That's it! Cindy has learned to have a broken heart and a contrite spirit through scripture study, through being willing to follow the Spirit, and through repentance. I'm sure I'm missing some too. But man, I love Cindy and want to follow her. And I know she's trying to follow the Savior. I think that's good company to be in.

This interview had me smiling almost the entire time. Like from ear to ear. When Brooks Shotgunn really found The Book of Mormon, it came to life to him. And it seems like life bloomed. Formerly "Bishop" Tyler Youngbull has made a lot of changes in his lifetime. While he was raised with the Gospel of Jesus Christ as a part of his life, it wasn't the center of his youth. But prayer was. And remains so today. He has grown from being told when and how to pray to learning to love prayer as a personal and powerful connection with the Lord. Prayer was the catalyst for a mission. It has helped him define his goals. It has strengthened him in callings in the Church. And it's a legacy he hopes he leaves with the wonderful people he has associated with in his ward. As a true disciple of Jesus Christ, Tyler testifies of a living Savior and of the Plan of Salvation. I'm so thankful for Brother Youngbull.

Ason Begaye - Navajo Jul 26, 2022

Not long ago, my guest was simply called "Sister Begaye" most of the time. She was still Ason, but she rarely used that name. "Sister" is a lovely title when you think about how those who truly live up to its meaning treat other people. Ason talks about how she wants to continue to be part of the gathering of Israel because it's the culture of Christ. She talks about how it's a home for all of us. A safe place. She talks about making her own future family home a safe place. She's learned first-hand the differences between a family home that is in a state of turmoil and a family home that is full of love. Her plan for making it a safe haven is to follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost and make it a place where Christ would feel welcome.

For some people, knowing exactly what they want to do with their life is easy. For most of us, we have to work at it. We have to be willing to be led by the Spirit. We have to be willing to take twists and turns that we didn't expect. And we have to be willing to use the gifts that God has given to us individually to "get there." Tyler doesn't know exactly what he wants to do as his "end game" goal [career]. But he recognizes that God has given him very specific gifts that he intends to use in the benefit of our brothers and sister. I love that. I love that he is willing to do good to bring glory to God. I also love how he was blessed to be able to learn more about his heritage through his missionary service. The Lord truly does bless us!

Roy Talk - Eastern Band of Cherokee & Navajo Jul 12, 2022

As I edited this episode, I just think about how humble Roy Talk is. Sure, he's friendly and funny--but that doesn't mean he's not humble. He loves his wife, children, parents, and all his family with his whole heart (except that tiny part that is reserved for BYU Cougars, Utah Jazz, and Green Bay Packers). It's like it's bursting out of him. He's learned to love so well that he's been able to move past heinous hurts. I think he's the type of person that has learned to listen to other people so intently that he is able to learn great things from them--which in turn makes him a wonderful person to talk to. I'm sure if you've ever bought a t-shirt from him that you've walked away thinking, "I'm sure glad I stopped to talk to Roy and got the souvenir to boot!"

John Borrows is very well educated--academically and by the Spirit. I loved talking to him! I told him I've been thinking about faith for a while and I asked him to just comment on it. Talking about nests, birds, fish, rivers, and water brought faith a deeper meaning for me. He also has learned new meanings to commonly-held Latter-day Saint beliefs that has added dimension and connection to his thoughts and life. He was just so interesting that I'm excited for you to hear this conversation. I think your faith will be strengthened and possibly your relationships with the people around you.

When I first contacted Hugh Jones, I was so happy with the interesting things he had to say. It's interesting how often I ask a question that comes into my mind that my guest has been working on, pondering on, or executing in their own life. This time the interesting conversation revolved around firming up your own testimony so that your children are able to watch you work through questions of your own. But the important thing is to build and strengthen your testimony--make sure your relationship with the Lord is your own and a real relationship. I also loved how he talked about being engaged in good works on your own--without being told what to do. That lesson is sitting in the front of my brain and making me want to be more aware of my own actions. Such a great conversation.

There's one point when I was talking to Clayton Long that I asked him what he wanted to talk about. Two things came up. First is the Gathering of Israel. He really wants to be a part of that gathering (as he is) because he knows that it will help bring the Savior back to the world. The second thing he really wanted to talk about is testimony--his own and how to start, nurture, and grow testimonies. He wants to be useful in Heavenly Father's hands in teaching people how to find and build their testimonies. These two desires are my desires as well. Also, I felt loved by this man when he called me his daughter. I love that about our Navajo way--and the true way of the Church--that we really are family. We really do belong to each other and as such we should love and care for each other.

Summer Fox Belly - Oglala Sioux Jun 14, 2022

There is a great word that Summer Fox Belly teaches us today: Hunka. It has to do with relationships. She teaches us that when we are hunka, we have a familial obligation to each other, whether or not we are blood family. I loved her teaching us this. As we talked, she alluded to this in multiple ways in regards to her branch, her foster family, and friends in general. It made me feel closer to her knowing that she feels like this about people, hopefully me as well. But it really made me feel the Christlike love we call "charity." I was really grateful to have a new way to look at Him, our Savior, and in those that I associate with. Let us all try to be a little more hunka with each other.

Abraham Thomas - Oglala Sioux Jun 07, 2022

I want Abraham Thomas to be another one of my best friends. I guess I keep finding the best people and the best in people. Abraham is a singer. He does it because he loves it. But more importantly because he knows that it is a gift given to him from our Father so Abraham can help bring people back to Him. It's an amazing gift. It doesn't, however, make all the hard parts in his life go away. Abraham acknowledges depression in his life--and it has gotten really dark at times--but he fights it. He knows that the fight can be won when he asks Heavenly Father for help. He also knows that his fight has made him strong enough that he can help other people in their fights. His heart is so full of love--for you and for me.

Michalyn Steele - Seneca May 31, 2022

Michalyn Steele has a brilliant mind--and a strong testimony of the Savior Jesus Christ. I loved talking to her about how she has been able to use both her mind and her testimony to bring the world a little more light. It feels like we're family (we're both Parkers!). It was fun to hear how her passion to help her students become valuable members of society has been adding to her personal growth. As a single woman in The Church of Jesus Christ, she recognizes that all that the Lord promises will be sure and true. I'm so grateful for her time and her testimony.

Geri Daines - Tlingit May 24, 2022

I believe I could rightfully say Geri Daines has a thirst for knowledge. This led her to get a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a doctoral degree. And this led her to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Having truth as an anchor point, family as another, and the Savior has kept her steady through all sorts of difficulties. She is so proud of her siblings and her children and grandchildren. She looks for the good in people and recognizes that if that "good" is cultivated, people can shine. She has learned to give herself grace. These things all help her to know her divinity.

Aimee Adams - Waccamaw Souian, Cherokee, & Seneca May 17, 2022

I've had a hard few days...but having Aimee Adams' clear, calm, cool demeanor and positive attitude really soothed my soul. Like balm. It's strange that the "negative" ions you find in abundance at the seashore help you find peace. Aimee seems to have harnessed that peace in her life--or at least knows how to use the peace in her life to spread peace. I find that to be a wonderful Christlike attribute. Aimee's excitement about the Gospel of Jesus Christ is infectious. Her stories about being sincere and honest about that love makes me get excited too! Some day I'm going to meet Aimee and just give her the biggest hug--she's that kind of person.

Elliot Bryant - Navajo May 10, 2022

Everyone has a story. That is what I have come to believe. Elliot Bryant has come to know the Savior by diligently heeding the commandments and following the prophet. It hasn't always been easy. He has had to come back to things he's learned and try again. But that's what we're all supposed to do. He works hard at fulfilling his church callings and has seen blessings in his life because of that. He has worked hard in his family to be a good son, sibling, and uncle. Most of us strive for those same designations. I think those are great designations in the eternal scheme as well.

"Ray of light"! That's what we shall call Donald Rodgers. He's simply delightful to be around. When he and his wife pulled into our driveway, my 4-year-old ran out to greet them. I don't think she could help hugging both of them. They give off a reassuring feeling. Donald is full of the perfect amount of mischief, gratitude, loyalty, and humility. He was so fun to be around. I only managed to capture a few of his stories, I'm sure. But one of my favorite parts was at the end of our conversations when he almost couldn't stop talking about how much he loves our Savior Jesus Christ. His testimony is sure. I'm so glad to now include Donald as one of my friends.

I loved this interview! Sister Ilene Begay, translated by her son, Justin, testified again and again about how the Spirit of the Lord has been her way to know our Savior Jesus Christ. Sister Begay only speaks Navajo. She never had the opportunity to learn to read or to write. But the most important communicator to her has been the Holy Ghost. Because she has been so close to the Spirit, she has been able to witness miracles and blessings! I almost wish this was required listening--it is so good. What a blessing the Gospel of Jesus Christ is!

A lot of this episode focuses on Andi Gooch's story of finding her birth identity. It is still ongoing. One piece of the puzzle at a time. And it's beautiful. Every piece is beautiful. Because Andi has come to know her individual worth, her divine nature, she is able to help others find theirs as well. She has been able to help people through the family history convention called Roots Tech. And she's been able to help individual girls in a girls' home know that they are loved and worth love. I personally found hope and joy in Andi's story and hope that you find that as well.

Mark and I sat together with Keali'i (Kelly) and Hannah Baker for much longer than just the interview. They are so good for each other. Together they are building a wonderful life centered on their testimonies of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Kelly knows that the Atonement of Jesus Christ can change hearts, minds, and bodies. Before he went on his mission, he had never really read the Book of Mormon. After time lost, he finally read it--in six days! That experience ensured his testimony of that scripture. He talks about how his heritage has given him a purpose. And I really loved his explanation of what it means to be a member of the Tribe of Israel--stick around for that. Kelly is the type of person you want in your life because of his attitude, love, and strength.

Carmelita Red Elk Thomas - Comanche Mar 22, 2022

What a fun experience! Visiting with Carmelita Thomas about her life was absolutely delightful. She was raised in Oklahoma but landed in the Cache Valley in Utah. When she joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a young adult, she promised that she wasn't going to be "wishy washy" about the Gospel. She's held true to that promise. As a valiant disciple of Christ, she has made temple and family history work a priority in her life. She showed me (we were on Skype) a box full of names that she has done temple work for. She's pretty proud of that--in a humble way of course. She testifies of the Atonement as part of her life. And she testifies that living a Christlike life is the best life. I'm so glad that I could visit with this young lady: Carmelita Red Elk.

Melvin Sam - Navajo Mar 15, 2022

There are so many other things that we could have talked about, Melvin Sam and I. But we ended up talking about conversion, marriage, children, places they've lived, and covenants. Covenants was a big thing that I have been thinking about a lot lately. Mel felt lost in the world until he truly came to know the Plan on Salvation and that he was truly a part of Heavenly Father's plan. But when Mel came to know for sure that there was purpose and reasoning, he has hung tight to that knowledge. In some ways, it has become a mission for him now to spread the word. What a great word to spread! The good word! Also, we tagged on an extra part about participating in The Book of Mormon videos and about how that not only felt in 2021, but how it likely felt when the Savior actually came to the people of Bountiful.

I talked to Sister LaBelle just the day before we recorded our conversation. She was both excited and nervous to share her testimony and her story. She was excited because she knows that the gathering of Israel is a priority in the world today. She was nervous because she wanted to make sure her words were right, and that she could reach those who need to be reached. But as I listened to her soft voice and her careful words, I knew that the Holy Ghost was her companion. The Lord is blessing her as she takes care of her mother, her family, and her community. The Gathering of Nations! Jake Collins has a mixed heritage. And now so do his children (as his wife is also of a different tribe). I loved talking to Jake. He was full of energy. Education...then strength training....then dentistry. The Lord was in the details, as always. It was so great to hear of how Jake and his family were served by members of their ward who had their eyes and hearts open to serving. It was also so great to hear how Jake and his fellow dental students and staff were able to serve people in Jamaica. Stephanie Chadwick - Navajo Feb 22, 2022

As a best practice, we should be teaching our children every day Gospel principles and setting examples of how the Gospel actually works in and through our very lives. Stephanie Chadwick does this not only with the Gospel but also with her Navajo heritage. Her children have been blessed to have parents who have given them opportunities to experience how The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has grounded Stephanie and how their divine natures teach them to be strong and independent. Stephanie has also been able to influence many other young people to reach high and far in their lives. In other words, Stephanie is a pretty amazing person. I'm glad to have been able to reach out to her all the way on the other side of the world.

Franklin Keel - Chickasaw & Choctaw Feb 15, 2022

As I've been blessed to get to know Franklin Keel, I just imagine all the good that he's been able to do in the world. He has sought to help people with his education and abilities. I love how he tenderly talks about family and people he admires. I love his firm testimony of how Heavenly Father loves His daughters. Just hearing Franklin express that made me feel God's love for me. I am impressed with his knowledge of a wide variety of things: histories, law, relationships, government, languages. He's so humble, and yet I could sit and learn from him for days. I am so grateful for his testimony of our divine nature and our relationship with our Savior--it has certainly strengthened mine.

It's rare for most of us to be given very specific instructions about what to do with our lives. Sosha Cox says it's rare for her--but when it does happen, it is VERY specific. At different times in her life, she has been directed to go on a mission, to move to Provo, and to find a child through adoption. Brother John Beck was raised in South Carolina with a great many of his Catawba family. He had the Gospel growing up, but not necessarily perfect examples of living Gospel standards. Because he did stick with what he learned to be true, he has been led again and again to new and greater opportunities. At the end of this conversation John acknowledges that the more we are blessed, the greater the responsibility we have to share and live the Gospel. I loved that we were surprise opportunities that John was given because he was in the right place at the right time. But the thing that I loved the most was the experiences he had with his father in returning to full activity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after almost a lifetime of inactivity. I got emotional when he described the blessing this was to him. I hope you enjoy this time together.

I thought that when I was told by the Spirit to start a podcast that it was pretty big. Gwendena Lee-Gatewood was moved by the Spirit to run for the White Mountain Apache chairmanship. That. Is. Huge!!!!! Well, she did. She ran four years ago and won. She is coming to the end of her four-year term right now. And she's chosen to run again. I just want to hug her and let her know how much I admire her. She has used her position as chairwoman to teach people the Gospel of Jesus Christ--through service and love. She has been willing to be humble and learn from different events how to become a better leader. She says that as a young girl she was very shy, but she has taken the opportunities presented her to challenge and stretch herself. I think you're going to admire her and be strengthened by her as well.

There's something about Zumba instructors. Maybe Zumba instructors are supposed to have beautiful souls. Eileen Crocker definitely has a beautiful soul. Seems like she is the type of person that you'd like to dance with. Seems like she's the type of person that you'd be uplifted by just being around. I love her testimony that she knows that missionary work and temple work are foundational to knowing and loving the Savior. I love that she values her family and teaches her children by example. Tawny McEwen and I have a lot in common--and so much not in common. But I feel like that with a lot of the guests here on Tribe of Testimonies. I think that's something the Lord wants us to all feel about each other--that we're family in one regard or another. Anyway, Tawny is pretty amazing. The way she and her family have loved their extended family is a prime example of how to witness our beliefs. Do I truly love someone with Christlike love? Because that's what has been asked of us. I also loved how Tawny and her mom have been able to uncover so many family history names. Honestly, I'm a little jealous of that. One day...one day.... When I started doing some research on creating this podcast, Kyle Forsyth was one of the first "strangers" that I reached out to. I'm so glad that I did. I value his friendship and his testimony. Charity Fleming is a busy woman! She works AND has a multitude of pet projects. She has four kids and a husband. And she's the Primary President in her ward!!!! Whew! I just got tired typing all of that. I love talking to Charity and learning about her conversion. It's actually pretty perfect for Christmastime, to talk about giving your life to the Savior or finding Him. Either. I loved listening to her metaphor about the hillside and seeing all the different things, and yet knowing that all those things are part of the same thing. We all can't see it all. And sometimes we can see different parts of the overall Plan. I also loved learning about Charity's willingness to take other leaps of faith. It's a testament that the Holy Ghost can and will help us make crucial decisions. I hope you enjoy this time with Charity.

Gabriel LaDue has had a very interesting life--and he's only in his 20's! His father is Ojibwe and his mother is eastern European. He's been blessed to have been able to spend time with both cultures as well as other cultures. But the culture that has been the most impactful on him is the culture of Jesus Christ. I loved spending time with him and talking families, experiences, and Gospel. Rachel Crouse - Hopi Nov 30, 2021

Rachel Crouse and I have something in common: we did NOT expect to start something big--but the Spirit witnessed that it was a calling and the Lord made doors open. Rachel and her family have started a non-profit to help the residents on the Hopi Reservation. It has brought her closer to her family, to her roots, and to the Lord. Also, Rachel witnesses of the blessing a ward family can be in the lives of the member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Being on necessary bedrest for months was only possible with the love and support of those around her. Now she has a beautiful daughter to witness of the goodness of those who are seeking to share one another's burdens.

As we started to talk, William Locklear shared some things about how he's grateful for the Lumbee community he hails from. He shared how he feels connected to them whenever he find another Lumbee. He didn't say it, but I think that is a parallel with how a lot of us feel about sharing the Light of Christ with others--we feel connected. William also shares how he has been blessed by trying his best to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and he feels that difference when he doesn't. I love that William recognizes the good in other people. I love that he has a mission in life. I love that William is a light.

I love to giggle. I actually did that quite a bit in this interview with Mariah Pope. It just seemed like we had a lot in common. And I loved that she was able to see the humor of things that have happened in her life. Like being called into a Relief Society presidency when she felt not just that the calling should go to someone else, but that she didn't even know the sisters she was called to serve. (I've had that same experience!) I love how she was just like, "Well, I guess I'll try this college program...might as well." I kind of had a similar experience. I love how she has come into a family that seems so different than her own--and yet it's becoming the perfect fit for her. Definitely the Lord is guiding her life. And I love that she recognizes Him.

Of all my family, I must be Steve Scott's biggest fan. Why do I say that? Because I know that my family watches Steve and Chelsea for part of their "Come, Follow me" study each week and none of them caught the times Steve has mentioned his indigenous affiliation except me! Ha! Steve fills my soul every time he shares testimony with me (and the world). Could you imagine the good in the world if we all did that a little more for each other? So. Much. Good. Steve is otherwise your run-of-the-mill great guy that you definitely have something in common with. He's married. He's raising a family. He is trying to teach his children good values. He's a friend. He's trying to be actively engaged in good things. You know, all the things that we try to aspire to in our own run-of-the-mill lives. Jesse Fox comes from a large family. The amazing thing is that every child has graduated from college, almost half of them with graduate degrees. Jesse is a chiropractor in the Phoenix area. He never intended on ending up in Arizona, it was not in his plans. But, when the Lord points you in a specific direction, you go. He's learned that about a lot of other aspects of his life as well. I'm grateful for the time Jesse gave to us so we could hear his testimony and how the Gospel of Jesus Christ affects every part of his life.

This beautiful woman, Betty LaFontaine, is the type of woman I truly want to emulate. She has grace, strength, and love. She's been through a lot in her life and has seemed to pick the roses from out of the thorns. Some people have the gift of truly looking into another's heart and knowing them, and I feel like that is one of Betty's gifts. Her testimony of the Book of Mormon, and especially of the Savior Jesus Christ, have given her the firm foundation that is sometimes required to get through hard things. And she also just knows when a smile is all that's needed. I hope as you listen to her recount only a small portion of the journey she's been on that you'll be better able to see the beauty as you walk through your own life.

I recently received an email from Chris Nez asking if we could schedule a time for an interview. He is a sixth generation member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through one of his Navajo lines. SIXTH! Can you believe that? It's amazing. He didn't come to know that he was a sixth generation just as part of family lore, he had to learn it by family history. Doing family history has lead him to find relatives that have brought his testimony to a strong foundation that Jesus Christ's plan for us on earth is divine and good. Families can be together forever! It's a blessing that he now shares with his own wife and children. I'm so glad to have this testimony added to those shared before to strengthen my testimony.

What a spunky, heart-full-of-joy person Meredith Schramm is! As we interviewed on the phone, I just wanted to be in the same room as her to see her expressions and her bounce. She has a love of people. She has a love of education. She has a love of so many things. Did you know she and her family also do amazing beadwork? Well, it shouldn't surprise you. The way she recognizes the small and big workings of the Lord in her life is encouraging, plain, and simple. I think we can learn from her that life is a blessing and being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a way to show our Savior that we recognize Him and honor him.

And yet it is such a beautiful experience she's going through. She's single. She lives in a small town on the border of the Navajo Reservation. And she is blessing the lives of so many people--young, old, and in-between. She is a connector. She's passing on the light from her relationship with the Savior to those she interacts with. The name "Stephanie" means "a crown;" see--she's a blessing of glory!

Devin Nez - Navajo Sep 14, 2021

This guy is sharp! Or at least, the tools he uses are sharp. He's a barber. So, pull up a chair and have a visit with him. Devin Nez is the oldest of three sons. He has spent time learning and growing on the Navajo Reservation as well as his teen years in Utah County. He served a mission in the Dakotas where he learned from teachers of true charity. You like sports? So does Devin. He's learned life lessons from his interaction with teammates and coaches and from the games he's played. Also--I was impressed that though our first appointment had to be cancelled, he was the one who followed up and reset a time to get together. Yup, he's sharp and I'm glad I could visit with him. Joseph Namingha - Zuni & Tewa-Hopi Sep 07, 2021

This young recently-returned missionary, Joseph Namingha, is a thinker. He thinks about how we can each receive our own personal revelation. He thinks about how his parents and grandparents have set a good example to him that he wants to emulate. He thinks about how a simple message on social media can influence the people who read it. He thinks about how the scriptures have meaning to us even in our modern day. I'm glad that I can call Joseph my brother in the Gospel. I hope he goes on to do so much good in the world. It's the small things that can make a huge difference.

My introduction to Palmer Gambler was last December when I first listened to his podcast. He really wants to share his testimony of a loving Father in Heaven and a Savior. He loves his wife and their children with his whole heart. He recognizes weaknesses in himself and seeks to improve. He sees the greatness in the youth today. He witnesses that miracles aren't always found by stumbling across them, but often they are found by forging ahead and then looking back and seeing the partnership we've had with God along the way. This kid, Sonny Pugh, is absolutely a light. We met on the Book of Mormon live videos set as extras. (His parents are awesome too. They love their children fiercely.) Sonny doesn't live around many other people who look like him. But he recognizes, even at 13-years-old, that first and foremost he is a son of God. He wants to do good and be good. He wants to please both his mortal parents and his Heavenly Parents. He prays about the Book of Mormon AS HE IS READING IT! This young man is going to bless the lives of many people. I'm grateful that I got to know him on set and on this interview. Let's pray for all the youth of these days that they can make good decisions and be strengthened.

Way back when I first started this podcast, my friend told me to plan on interviewing Priscilla Yellowhead Tobey. I'm so glad that I finally could interview Priscilla. I love that she allowed the Gospel of Jesus Christ to change her. I love that she recognizes how the scriptures apply directly to her. I love that she has the ability to call down the blessings of Heaven into her life. I love that she asks daily to be a missionary. I love that she is positive and lovely with strangers and family. I love that she's a teacher of a wide variety of goodness. There's a lot of beautiful things to love about Priscilla. I'm so glad I had this time to get to know her. I think you'll be glad too.

Jessica Delai - The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Aug 13, 2021

My husband often asks me what stood out to me about an interview when I complete it. This time I told him that Jessica Delai was a convert, who for a time, was inactive. Then she told me that one day she looked at herself and thought, "I'm inactive." Jessica then realized the best way to *become active* was to DO something about it. I really admire that about Jessica--she does something about the things she sees she can improve on. She wants to improve the feeling in her home: so she posts reminders to talk kindly. She wants to improve the relationships she has with others: so she gives encouragement and acknowledgement to those around her. She wants to teacher her children about the Savior: so she practices His teaching in her own life. I want to be like Jessica...I think I'll start something good today too.

Dana Anquoe - Kiowa & Maidu Jul 27, 2021

One of the very first Native friends I met at BYU was Dana Anquoe. She was just as green as I was, but it turns out she didn't have the support that I did. In other words--she was a lot braver than I was. I admire that about her. I admire her courage. I also admire her indomitable spirit. During this conversation, I learned about her that the Gospel of Jesus Christ has really been a sure foundation for her. It has provided growth and safety. Pretty sure we can all find those qualities in the Gospel if we allow it. Dana hasn't had a "charmed" life, but her attitude makes so much difference. Finally, she taught me something about teaching that pretty much reset my whole thought process: testify first. It was absolutely delightful to interview Dana for an hour.

Ervin Trujillo - Navajo Jul 20, 2021

Again, my guest is a direct answer to a prayer I offered to Heavenly Father. Why? Because I really wanted to talk to someone who works with the youth of today. Ervin Trujillo is that person. On a lesser note, Ervin answered my prayer to find someone to fill in last minute. I love how vulnerable Ervin is with us about how he loves the youth, how he loves his wife, how he loves the temple, and how he loves the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Ervin's story is the same as so many: a convert, sometimes inactive, and yet always coming back to the Savior. And yet his story is uniquely his. Heavenly Father definitely has prepared a way for each of us to get back to Him--and it's always through the Savior who is Love embodied. Thanks Ervin!

I think that's due to her charm and ability to connect. I think a lot about connecting these days. We need people--we're supposed to be connected. Jalynne is really good at that. Charles has drawn strength from knowing where he came from because it gives him direction to where he wants to go in the future. In this episode we talk about why we learn. We talk about the ability to relate without having to "experience" everything. And, we talk about knowing that Heavenly Father is aware.

I love talking with our elders. William Tso's cadence and tone just calmed my "can't be late! Gotta do a good job!" frazzled mind. And then when he shared his testimony of how he knows the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, my heart rejoiced with him. I could tell that he had learned for himself that the Gospel is true and that he really saw the value and lasting impact it would have for him and his family. I love that he's passionate about music and how that bring people together and bring people joy. I showed up to his house with my teeny tiny microphone stands and asked if we could sit at his table. He asked his wife to grab a stand with a boom arm so he could relax in his rocking chair. I guess that in itself showed how he's able to improvise to make things better for whatever situation. Rachael Brockway - Blackfoot Nation Jun 15, 2021

As I put out the initial call to family and friends to help me find faithful Native American members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I was given Rachael Brockway's name and contact information. Rachael was born in Canada but adopted by a white, middle-class Latter-day Saint family in the United States. She grew up with no Native influence. As a young adult, she found a fit with Native American students at the university she attended. Best of all, not only did she find that she belonged in Native culture but she also learned for herself that she belonged in the culture of Jesus Christ. She knows that her Savior and Heavenly Father love her as an individual with a unique role to play in the world we live in. I'm grateful that she spent some time with me so that I can share that time with you.

Darren Parry is a brave man. His first "big" to-do was running for a U.S. congressional seat? Yes! He is always out and about doing good and being the type of person other people can look to and say, "Yes, this man is a good man. Follow him." The best part of following Darren is that he's doing his darndest to follow the Savior. "History is complicated." Aren't we all glad that we have a Savior who will judge us as individuals and as a cumulation of the experiences we have had, the things we have been taught, and the things we understand? I certainly am. I'm glad to count Darren as my friend now. We're on this journey together.

How do you know that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is true? Tyrone Whitehorse shares his story of his personal conversion--not just going through the motions of attending church, but actually knowing the Gospel is true. He grew up at the feet of Navajo medicine people and with a grandma who was a Indian Placement program pioneer. He learned amazing values and insights from all these people who taught him to have clean hands and a pure heart. To this day he strives to live so all the people who shaped him will be proud of him because that, in turn, is a way to love the Savior.

The more we learn about our spiritual gifts, the more they might surprise us. Cherisse Fisher always considered herself a pretty shy person. But, as she has grown in her testimony and gospel knowledge, the more she has become an every day missionary. She is able to share testimony to strangers who come into her life for just fractions of time. And she is sharing this gift with her family so they can learn it. Perhaps, too, those in her family tree are angels surrounding her when she needs them for her own benefit and for when she needs to serve and share with others. Cherisse is an amazing example of what it means to be a disciple of Christ.

Curtis is a friend of mine from law school. Since law school, he's worked all over the world. He's even moved his family to London for a time. He loves his family. His parents were first-generation members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their example showed him how to love family, work hard at whatever you're doing, and learn from the Holy Ghost how to direct your life. An unofficial family motto is "Lift where you stand"--meaning, "do the work that's in front of you while it's in front of you." (Thanks President Dieter F. Uchtdorf!) He has served in various Church callings and has found meaning and satisfaction in all of them. Curtis is a great example all these things, you're going to enjoy this upbeat guy!

While KeAloha Douma has done some amazing things in her life (graduating from BYU, serving a mission in France, dancing with Lamanite Generation/Living Legends, becoming Miss Indian World, conquering law school, serving her tribe as the Attorney General), she is most proud of her family. She loves her husband, children, and extended family. She cherishes the traditions who have shaped her and her husband and which now shape her children's lives. How would your life be different if your grandparents and/or parents who were baptized members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stayed active throughout their lives instead of going inactive? It might be better. It might be worse. Or--possibly--it might have turned out exactly like Heavenly Father intended all along. Maybe. From my distant mortal perspective, it looks like Marquez Barlow's youth prepared him to know his identity and destiny when missionaries entered his life. The songs he learned taught him a perspective on life that he can use each and every day. The people in his life love him by word and by example. And now he has been able to use all these tools as a missionary for The Church even during a pandemic and through multiple changes in Church culture. When I returned from the Washington, DC, area and found a full-time job in Salt Lake City, I was called to be a Relief Society president. I warned my bishop I wasn't hanging around to fill that calling for four or more years--I was planning on getting out within six months. Being a Relief Society president in a ward is a big job. Sheiyenne Baloo is currently her YSA (young single adult) ward Relief Society president. That's a big job! Her job (calling to serve) is even more "big" by circumstances. Through her life experiences, she has learned her divine identity, how to listen to the Holy Ghost, how to share her light with others, and many other things. I hope you enjoy this time with her as her light is warm, steady, and Christlike.

Before we started recording, Marty asked me if it was okay to mention that he was actually considering and working toward becoming a Catholic priest. He doesn't mention it in the interview. I told him "Of course you can!" We all have different stories--don't we? Some of us are deep into a different religion before finding The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some of us were born and raised in it. Some of us never had God in our life at all. And there are variations of all these. He had a small baptism as far as persons present in the room. But, he had a great baptism as far as persons sharing the experience online. (You know: Covid.) April SunShine M. Sanchez - Navajo Feb 23, 2021

With both paternal and maternal family histories of heart problems, April SunShine Sanchez was bound to have them as well. However, having them begin when she was only 28 years old was terrifying, burdensome, and downright difficult. Health problems aren't for the feint of heart. [That's a terrible pun.] On the flip side, Heavenly Father has given April more grit, more endurance, more faith--more heart--than most of us. Maybe you can draw some strength from April's story; maybe April's heart can strengthen your heart.

Jeffrey Not Help Him - Lakota Feb 16, 2021

A few years ago, when I taught Church history in Sunday School, the thought came to me that we were learning so much about individuals and their stories because they demonstrated the Gospel by living it. Brother Jeffrey Not Help Him is a modern pioneer in that regard. He tests it by living it. His testimony of the Book of Mormon, of the temple, and of the plan of salvation is strong and getting stronger. He and his wife work together to help their tiny Church group (soon to be branch) the beauty of being Christians.

I am a bum. I hardly excercise. Brother Terry Goedel is the opposite of that. He is enthusiastic about hoop dancing and therefore he keeps his body in shape! Through hoop dancing, he has found a connection with our Creator, our Savior Jesus Christ. Growing up as a child of a Navy officer, he didn't have connection at all with the heritage he was born to. Vanessa attended BYU straight from the Navajo Reservation. She didn't know anything about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The only religion she knew was the traditional Navajo way. While attending BYU, a series of "coincidental" events led to her eventual conversion.
