    Tribe of Testimonies

The Book of Mormon, a scripture of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, describes two peoples: Lamanites and Nephites. After a last great battle, the Nephites were destroyed from the face of the earth. The remnants of the Lamanites are among the ancestors of today’s North American Native Americans. Andrea Hales (Navajo), the host of Tribe of Testimonies, interviews faithful Native American Latter-day Saints of tribes across the U.S. and Canada to learn how the Gospel of Jesus Christ has influenced their lives. Everyone’s story is different—conversions, families, missions, educations, careers, talents, achievements, failures, trials. As we share our stories, maybe we can strengthen each other. May we all walk in beauty. // This podcast is not sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, we love the Church. Erlene Brown - San Carlos Apache & Navajo Oct 25, 2022
    Show notes

There were so many surprises with Erlene Brown's interview. First off, she originally told me that she didn't know what to talk about regarding what she loves about her heritage as it relates to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. But her pioneer story is right on point! Then she is so humble and vulnerable about her addictions and crimes--and how she overcame them. (Thank you, Jesus!) And finally, her testimony about why it matters to be of the Tribe of Israel is so compelling because she literally prayed to know for herself. Obviously, this summary just glances over everything--you definitely should listen to her own words.

    Sheila Taysom - Navajo Oct 18, 2022
    Show notes

Trigger warning: Sheila Taysom shares about how she went, as an adult, to a counseling group for those who were abused as children. But because of that, she has learned how much Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love her.
Much of the rest of our conversation was joyful. She talks about her sweet Downs Syndrome son. She praises bringing families together. She shares testimony of family history. And she teaches about how thin the veil really can be--and what a blessing it is. She's the one who reached out to me, so hopefully whoever you are that needs to hear this message can have a witness of whatever truth is spoken for your ears.

    Adam Conte - Oneida & Mohawk Oct 11, 2022
    Show notes

This guy! This guy is a go-go-go guy. Adam Conte is busy doing good works. As a child, his parents started him on the right path. As a youth he found his own testimony. As a young adult he participated in many performing groups that helped him firm his identity. And as a more mature adult, he has seen the value of good mentors, good family, and the good news (Gospel). He now is doing his best to help others recognize their worth and the blessings on the Gospel in their lives. He goes from one project to the next trying to serve and connect. And I love that!

    Gary Rogers - Cherokee Oct 04, 2022
    Show notes

This summer our family did a whirlwind road trip to see some Church History sites. We spent one day in Nauvoo. I figured that was the place of the highest concentration of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and that therefore it would be the highest chance for me to find someone amazing to interview. Score! Gary Rogers was the man I met. He and our family "bumped" into him four different times in one day. I don't know if you believe in signs--but I do. I felt that Heavenly Father, at the minimum, wanted us to be friends. So, here we are in conversation for you to eavesdrop on. Gary has led a very interesting life. We barely scratched the surface. But I hope you can feel how the Gospel has blessed and led his life. I'm glad he shared a bit of his story with us.

Dani Palmer - Lakota (Rosebud Sioux) Sep 29, 2022
    Show notes

Dani Palmer is a woman who has learned how to stand up for the truths that she believes in. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's unclear how to do it. There have been so many times when she has just put her faith in Heavenly Father and given Him her will. Countless blessings have come because she's practiced this. She's been led with family decisions, career decisions, and church decisions. We laughed together as she described the unusual circumstances that led to her current marriage. We sighed together as we talked about traumas in the world and how we can help prevent more. We commiserated on unusual church callings we've received. The more time we spent together, the more we were able to understand each other. It was wonderful.

Erin Campbell - Yakama, Tulalip, & Lumbee Sep 20, 2022

There's a part in this conversation with Erin Campbell where she talks about having a tumor on one of her glands. She had to have surgery. Surgery stinks. But she also talks about how she and her relationships grew and strengthened. She talks about how one day, we'll be able to look back on our lives and recognize that growth requires challenge--and she's grateful that she's been able to grow. I love the testimony Erin shares about how living the Gospel of Jesus Christ each day is a blessing and strength. That's what I want too--to live the Gospel each day because I know it's a daily blessing.

Marlin Kingi - Oglala Lakota Sep 13, 2022
    Show notes

There is one that Marlin Kingi shares with us where the trickster teaches us that we need not let the world tell us who we are. Marlin has learned through is personal experiences how to let the Lord tell him who he is. That divine heritage has helped him be able to share to others their divine heritage. He has danced, worked, sang, and served showing that we are all children of God. President Nelson has been reminding of this again and again. Our first and foremost identity is that of belonging to God. Come listen how knowing this fact has influenced and led Marlin through his life.

    Benjamin Lee - Navajo Sep 06, 2022
    Show notes

Not everyone has full support when they join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Benjamin Lee had partial support. That was enough, though, for him to not only join but to also become a missionary. He thanks his parents and grandparents for teaching him to be true to the truths he has learned and to live the good values we preach in our Gospel. He also is able to see the connections and reminders in the Navajo culture of the blessings of the Gospel. I think all our lives would be blessed if we were willing and able to see the little reminders the Lord has put in our days to look to Him.

    Ron Begay - Navajo Sep 01, 2022
    Show notes

While I was talking with Brother Ron Begay, I was so moved with the missionary spirit. His mission stories are inspiring--not because literal mountains were moved. But because multiple tiny "mountains" were moved to show God's handiwork in his life. So missionary work has been on my mind since we visited. How am I doing the Lord's missionary work? How are you doing the Lord's missionary work? If you've served a mission--how does that continue to bless your life and/or how does that play on your thoughts each day? It's great to think about. And what a blessing it is to have opportunities in our lives, whether great or small, to share our testimony and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

    Junior Pinto - Navajo Aug 23, 2022
    Show notes

When I reached out to Junior Pinto about possibly being a guest, he said, "Let me pray about this.... I knew this day was coming but didn’t think it would be this soon." His connection with Heavenly Father and our Savior is profound and wide open. President Nelson and pretty much every prophet before has promised us that we can have that connection if we feed our faith and commune with intent. I loved, how without prompting, Junior ended our conversation--his testimony--in the holy name of Jesus Christ. We don't always have to use the words to do it, but I definitely think it's more powerful when we do acknowledge Him. In other words, Junior's words were very powerful to me and I am so grateful to be another witness to this joyful expression.
