    273 Chris Voss | Master Negotiations May 20, 2019
    Show notes

Chris Voss is a 24 year veteran of the FBI and retired as the lead international kidnapping negotiator there. Chris is a bestselling author and has a company called Black Swan that specializes in business negotiations drawing on his high-stakes hostage negotiation experience. In this, the latest episode of The Only Business Networking Podcast on iTunes, Chris talks to your host Travis Chappell about what to do when someone is haggling over a price with you, the most important tool that’s in a negotiators toolbox, and the only people that you should ever take advice from. Episode Highlights: Chris grew up in small-town mid-west and worked for his dad with mid-western blue-collar values. His father never asked anyone to do anything he wouldn’t do himself, but nothing was above him. Chris was expected to go to college, both his mom and dad went and he was expected to be on his own after. Chris knew from an early age that he wanted to be in law enforcement. After college Chris joined the law enforcement but his dad urged him to do federal law enforcement. Chris started out in the FBI and they uprooted him and sent him to Pittsburgh, then New York. He got onto the hostage negotiation team in New York. He had a knack for hostage negotiation but he wanted to be on the SWAT team. He was initially rejected from the hostage negotiation team for being unqualified. There’s no shortage of people who will get good advice and then never follow it. Criticism is the most cowardly form of advice. Working at the suicide hotline gave Chris some of the best experience and training about how to establish credibility, etc. After a year and a half of volunteering on the hotline he started training at Quantico. Chris talks about how his first real hostage negotiation went. There’s never one fatal error, a lot of things lead up to the moment when things go bad. If you do everything you know to the best of your ability and it’s still not enough, you need to learn more. The practices gratification Chris’s team had when working with the team at Harvard. Empathy is not sympathy or compassion, but to use it is a sympathetic thing to do. If you want influence with somebody let them know that you get what they just said. Most people’s motivations are hidden or blind, but when you call them out it bonds you together and gives you influence. The go-to label that will work for you in many types of circumstances. The importance of tonality and body language. How to use calibrated questions and tonality to get the upper hand in business negotiations. There’s great power in deference - ask “how am I supposed to do that?” People love to be asked how to do something and if forces them to take a look at your situation. How to get out of a price haggling situation. Why what you know is more important than who you know but the combination of both is even more important. The Random Round: What profession other than your own do you think it would be fun to attempt? X-Games or extreme sports If you could sit on a park bench with anyone past or present and talk with them for an hour, who would it be and why? His father, to know his point of view of what’s important now that he’s passed away. How do you like to consume content? Reading real books What’s one of Chris’s favorite books? Anything by Steven Kotler Chris’s morning routine: Do gratitude and “get his mind right” What is your go-to pump up song? U2 Elevation What is something you’re not very good at? Organization, extended focus What is one place online where we can find Chris the most? Firefox browser news articles which are curated and out of the mainstream... 272: Freestyle Friday | Change your Mindset, Situation, or Expectations May 17, 2019
    Show notes

If your everyday job isn’t getting you excited this episode is for you. In this Freestyle Friday episode of Build Your Network, the only business networking podcast on iTunes, your host Travis Chappell talks about how his personal experience taught him exactly what he needed to change to be fulfilled. Learn the three things you need to change to move toward fulfillment in your life. Episode Highlights: The jobs Travis held that he liked aspects of, but didn’t love the job itself. Why you need to personally believe in your product in order to effectively sell it. It should never take you decades in a job you don’t enjoy to decide to do something else. The three things you need to change to move toward fulfillment in your life: Change your mindset. Change your situation. Change your expectations of how happy you’re going to be in life. 3 Key Points: If you don’t love what you do, you will not feel fulfilled in your life. If you can change your mindset you can do nearly anything and be happy. If you’re expecting to be the happiest person in the world and you’re doing something that doesn’t fulfill you then you cannot be as happy as someone who is chasing their dreams. Tweetable Quotes: “So many people are doing something they don’t enjoy, but they don’t understand why they’re not as fulfilled as someone who’s chasing their dreams.” -Travis “If you want to feel more fulfilled and be in a situation that’s to meeting your goals, change your situation.” -Travis “You either need to change your mindset about your situation, or change the situation or change your expectations.” -Travis Resources Mentioned: Visit Travis’ website at https://www.travischappell.com (https://www.travischappell.com) Learn how Travis books his guests on the show download Meet Your Hero for free at http://travischappell.com/hero (travischappell.com/hero) Get your free mastermind course from Travis here: http://www.freemmcourse.com/join (Freemmcourse.com/enroll) Explode Your Network at http://travischappell.com/explode (travischappell.com/explode) Download the Himalaya app free in https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/podcast-audio-player-himalaya/id1275493456?mt=8 (iTunes) and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ximalaya.ting.himalaya&hl=en_US (Google Play) For information regarding your data privacy, visit https://www.acast.com/privacy (acast.com/privacy)

Episode Highlights: Hither Mann Hither is a multi-million dollar real estate and forex investor out of London. Networking is about building relationships - you’re only annoying if you’re not genuine. People treat networking like it’s door to door sales, but that’s not how relationship building is. Always know what you want before you enter, know the end goal first. Joel Brown The first level of learning is knowledge, the second it understanding, the third is wisdom which is gained through application. Joel would double down on great relationships if he had to choose one, but growing his knowledge was also critically important. There’s a difference between an informational coach and a transformational coach. Dan Fleyshman Speaker, angel investor, and youngest founder of a publicly traded company in history. Who you know is most important, and it’s not even close. You don’t need to know what what every expert knows, you need to know the people who can leverage their knowledge. Dan talks about a time when a connection led to a moment of success. The number one most important practice that has allowed Dan to build relationships. Dan adds value on a massive scale and when he does ask for something he’s very direct. 3 Key Points: Don’t focus on the money, focus on the relationship. To learn you need knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. It’s not what you know, it’s what they know - you skip the line by knowing people who have already done what you want to do. Tweetable Quotes: “The basis of your success is who you know.” -Hither “You get paid based off of how much conflict you can face and break through.” -Joel “I fast-forwarded 27 years of experience by knowing the people who already know it all.” -Dan “People can’t buy access, cool, or information.” -Dan Resources Mentioned: Visit Travis’ website at http://www.buildyournetwork.co/ (Buildyournetwork.co) Learn more about mentorships and masterminds for FREE at http://www.freemmcourse.com/join (freemmcourse.com/enroll) Download Meet Your Hero at http://travischappell.com/hero (travischappell.com/hero) Explode Your Network at http://travischappell.com/explode (travischappell.com/explode) Go to Rothys.com/Travis to check out comfortable, sustainable shoes. 266: Freestyle Friday | Meet Your Hero - Follow Up May 03, 2019
    Show notes

What happens when you don’t get the response you wanted from one of the people you want to network with the most? In this Freestyle Friday episode of Build Your Network, the Only Business Networking podcast on iTunes, your host Travis Chappell talks about the most important part of meeting your hero - the follow up. Episode Highlights: Always remember to go in for the initial ask first. Remember to be professionally persistent, even if you get a “no” at first. Five tips on follow up: 1) If you do not get a response don’t follow up immediately, wait a few days and reach out in a different way. A no is just a not yet, just get better, creative, and figure out how to add value. 2) If you do get a no don’t get upset and ignore them - be empathetic. 3) Don’t offer something with conditions, offer it as a value-add. 4) If you get a “not right now” be sure to follow up again, ask when is a good time to follow-up again. 5) Get a smile on your face, try video the second time if you don’t do it the first. Download the FREE Meet Your Hero Course at TravisChappell.com. 3 Key Points: Some people say no to everyone the first time, so professional persistence is key. Many times you’re only getting a “no” because someone is busy, figure out a way to differentiate yourself. Most of communication is body language, attempt to do a video chat with your hero and put a smile on your face. Tweetable Quotes: “There’s no follow up if there’s no initial ask.” -Travis “Don’t offer to do things with conditions, just do it as a value-add.” -Travis “Only 7% of communication is the words that we say.” -Travis Resources Mentioned: Visit Travis’ website at https://www.travischappell.com (https://www.travischappell.com) Learn how Travis books his guests on the show download Meet Your Hero for free at http://travischappell.com/hero (travischappell.com/hero) Get your free mastermind course from Travis here: http://www.freemmcourse.com/join (Freemmcourse.com/enroll) Explode Your Network at http://travischappell.com/explode (travischappell.com/explode) Download the Himalaya app free in https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/podcast-audio-player-himalaya/id1275493456?mt=8 (iTunes) and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ximalaya.ting.himalaya&hl=en_US (Google Play) For information regarding your data privacy, visit https://www.acast.com/privacy (acast.com/privacy)

265: Who or What Part 7 with Jordan Harbinger, Amy Porterfield, and Jeff Hoffman May 01, 2019
    Show notes

In this latest episode of The Only Business Networking Podcast on iTunes, we have Part 7 of the Who or What Series where Jordan Harbinger from the Jordan Harbinger Show, Amy Porterfield from the Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast, and Jeff Hoffman, serial entrepreneur from Priceline.com and Ubid.com talk to your host Travis Chappell, to continue the debate of whether who you know or what you know is more important, and why. Episode Highlights: Jordan Harbinger: It’s all about who you know - not just connecting up but up, down, and laterally. Your network is the most important resource you have. Short term - your network is great, long term - your network is crucial. How Jordan defines networking - helping people without the expectation of return and in a scalable way. When people help you and keep score they’ll write you off when you don’t reciprocate. Never think about networking transactionally. If you think everyone is taking advantage of you, it’s probably you. If someone won’t help you, even with small things, they’re probably taking advantage of you. Amy Porterfield: Who you know is important to a certain extent, but what you know is also important. People always need things done, so figure out what those things are. How Travis developed a relationship with John Lee Dumas and then got Amy Porterfield on the show. How Amy became friends with Marie Forleo and why she didn’t pay for that friendship. How to get started adding value to others. If you’re an evangelist for what someone is doing you can’t help but notice them. A person of influence is not going to tell you how they want you to support them. Jeff Hoffman: Who you know is more important because you don’t know everything. You’re not as smart as you think you are, and you’re not good at 12 things, you’re good at one thing. If you’re a founder/CEO/Manager you should schedule days to be out of the office to build your network. Why Jeff engages strangers all the time. How Jeff got a Universal Studios executive to come to be a partner in his independent studio. Most people neglect networking because they’re too busy being inefficient to stop and take time to be more efficient. 3 Key Points: Networking is not all about schmoozing people ahead of you, you should be well-connected with everyone - up, down, and laterally. There is not a difference between networking and real relationship building. Don’t build your network when you need it, build it way before you need it. Tweetable Quotes: “The only things people can’t take away from you are your skills and relationships.” -Jordan “You don’t have to be Richard Branson to offer value to people.” -Travis “Your heart has to be in the right place, it’s never about making something happen for you, and then magic happens.” -Amy “The only way to build anything of significance in life is to build a team.” -Jeff Resources Mentioned: Visit Travis’ website at http://www.buildyournetwork.co/ (Buildyournetwork.co) Learn more about mentorships and masterminds for FREE at http://www.freemmcourse.com/join (freemmcourse.com/enroll) Download Meet Your Hero at http://travischappell.com/hero (travischappell.com/hero) Explode Your Network at http://travischappell.com/explode (travischappell.com/explode) For information regarding your data privacy, visit https://www.acast.com/privacy (acast.com/privacy)
