Lisa is joined by Rob Kugler the author of A Dog Named Beautiful: A Marine, a Dog, and a Long Road Trip Home.
Rob starts off talking about the soul-crushing diagnosis that his wonderful dog Bella gets and how he decides to take the time Bella has and fill it full of travel and adventures as he travels with Bella throughout the US. He also talks about family issues, the military, the gift of dogs, and so much more.
    BOOK DESCRIPTION:
An uplifting and unforgettable story of a US Marine, his extraordinary dog, and the road trip of a lifetime. When US Marine Rob Kugler returns from war not only had he given up a year of his life in service to his country, but he had also lost a brother in the fighting as well. Lost in grief, Rob finds solace and relief in the one thing that never fails to put a smile on his face: his chocolate lab, Bella. Exceptionally friendly, and always with - you wouldn’t believe it - a smile on her face, Bella is the friend Rob needs, and they spend their days exploring nature and taking photos. But then Bella develops a limp in her front leg. It’s cancer, and the prognosis isn’t good. Rob has a choice: either to let Bella go now, or amputate her cancer-riddled leg, and see what the next few months would bring. For Rob, the choice is a no-brainer, and instead of waiting at home for the cancer to spread, Rob and Bella pack their bags and hit the road. Life is short, but the road ahead is long and winding, and as they criss-cross the country Rob and Bella meet remarkable, life-changing men and women who are quick to make friends with this incredible three-legged dog.

    Show notes

Lisa is joined by Dr. Dana Dorfman who talks about her book, When Worry Works: How to Harness Your Parenting Stress and Guide Your Teen to Success.
Find out the why, what, and how parents worry, the parts the parent play which includes the eight types of parents when it comes to worrying about your kids: Sculptor, Game Show Contestant, Crowd-Please, Avoider, Clairvoyant, Shepherds, Corrector, and Replicator, and of course, when worry works.
    Book description:
Helps parents manage the stresses of adolescent achievement culture and to make decisions that align with their values, rather than their anxiety. WHEN WORRY WORKS responds to one of the primary sources of the nation’s worsening adolescent mental health crisis – achievement pressure. Burdened by the mounting pressures on today’s youth, parents seek ways to strike the balance between supporting their teens’ current well-being while also setting them up for future success. Eager to take action and to manage their escalating fears, parents inadvertently and unknowingly exacerbate the problem by overlooking their own parental achievement anxiety. Based on thirty years of clinical practice and her experiences raising her own teenagers in New York City, the work demonstrates that when parents become aware of their individual anxieties and learn to effectively manage them, they are empowered to make values aligned, rather than worry-driven parenting decisions. Dr. Dorfman provides practical evidence-based parenting strategies, exercises, and reflective prompts to guide parents through a process to constructively apply to their day-to-day parenting decisions.

Thanks to the rescue dog who saved her life after a traumatic brain injury, Carmen Leal went from saying she'd never have a dog to becoming an advocate for man's best friend. This endearing anthology includes stories that celebrate the bond between canines and humans including:

    • Buddy the beagle who went from living chained under a porch to becoming the town's only therapy dog

    • Bogey, an abandoned mixed-breed trained by prison inmates and adopted by his forever family

I Chose You is a collection of memorable, beautifully written stories of dogs rescued by people and, ultimately, people rescued by dogs. If you like four-legged friends and happy endings, you'll love Carmen Leal's touching collection of heart-warming stories.

Book description: Toxic Superfoods: How Oxalate Overload Is Making You Sick--and How to Get Better.
If you’re eating a healthy diet and you’re still dealing with fatigue, inflammation, anxiety, recurrent injuries, or chronic pain, the problem could be your spinach, almonds, sweet potatoes, and other trusted plant foods. And your key to vibrant health may be quitting these so-called superfoods.
After suffering for decades from chronic health problems, nutrition educator Sally K. She shines light on how our modern diets are overloaded with oxalates and offers fresh solutions including:
    • A complete, research-backed program to safely reverse your oxalate load
    • Comprehensive charts and resources on foods to avoid and better alternatives
