Vitamin D Facts That May Change Your Life Apr 27, 2018
    Show notes

Learn some basic truths about vitamin D.With so much data about vitamin D available, it’s easy to get confused. Some of that information is conflicting. Registered dietician Heidi Moretti says vitamin D helps your body create hormones. She breaks down the most important things you should know about vitamin D. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin D is 600 IU (international units). 5000 IU is comparable to a grain of rice. Spending a little time in the sun gives you 10,000 to 25,000 IU of vitamin D. Vitamin D changes disease risk because it affects how your genes work. It dampens genetic expression of autoimmune disorders and cancer. Best nutritional sources of vitamin D are wild salmon and mushrooms, but it takes a lot of food to reach the amounts available from some sunshine. Supplements can enhance the vitamin D you get from the sun and food. Vitamin D3 comes from lanolin and is an effective supplement. Vitamin D2 is derived from mushrooms and is less effective but vegan. Sun exposure is a concern. If your shadow is long when you stand in the sun, you’re not getting enough of the right kind of UV rays to create vitamin D. Stick to supplements if you don’t have much melanin in your skin. Listen as Heidi joins host Lisa Davis to discuss vitamin D basics you should know and how essential oils can help you.

When Food Is Comfort: Overcome Emotional Eating Apr 17, 2018
    Show notes

Are you an emotional eater?Trauma can open people up to addiction. It might be easier to binge on potato chips than to seek out and address the source of the compulsion Food addiction specialist Julie Simon points out that the brain is wired for emotional reactivity when there isn’t enough nurturing in childhood. Sometimes parents don’t know when they have a nurturing deficiency. Those children become adults and need to learn to nurture themselves. Learning self-care can help rewire your brain, lessening the drive to compulsively eat. Listen for the signals of distress in your body. Examine what you’re feeling and the circumstances surrounding those feelings. Look at what happened just prior to the impulse to eat. Validate your emotions. Develop the compassionate voice within yourself. Listen as Julie joins host Lisa Davis to discuss how to develop compassion for self, address food addiction, and enlist extra help via her 12-week program.

A cook copies the masters -- their dishes, their techniques, their seasoning -- to develop a knowledge and skill base. Here, Page recommends essential books for the chef’s library, explains the difference between enhancing flavor and adding flavor, lists trusted food sources for the best-quality ingredients, and demonstrates how to learn time-tested flavor pairings and affinities. Stage 2: Alchemy. A cook integrates and applies new knowledge and experience, converting ingredients and classic dishes into something fresh. This section overflows with examples of converted classic dishes, chefs’ sources of inspiration, and the thought process behind reinventions. Page also breaks down the principles behind the creation of individual flavors, especially those that contribute to the taste of familiar dishes, showing how to apply such principles to the invention of something new. Stage 3: Creativity. A cook connects and combines elements into a new creation. Page teaches you how to take a look at the cooking techniques you know, and the dishes you love, to play with different combinations and create dishes without recipes, using your informed imagination. You’ll also find countless proven techniques for enhancing creativity through both stimulation (including travel, reading, and dining out) and stillness (such as lowering brain wave frequencies via meditation and yoga).
