SPOS #619 - What People Are Really Thinking With Mark Bowden May 20, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #619 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.

Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #619 - Host: Mitch Joel. In business you have to understand your customers... and your audience. We often talk about the power of getting better at communicating. This is true. Still, one of the largest parts of communications is usually an arena that few business professionals spend any amount of time understanding: body language and unspoken cues. These, usually, are the difference between winning that pitch (and retaining that customer)... or not. Whether it's online, in person or just consuming his content, I always enjoy the time I spend with Mark Bowden. He's perfectly engaging, entertaining and there's always something to learn. There is this powerful notion that success comes not from what we say, but what we do and how we say it. This power of communications is powerful. Few people truly have the expertise of Mark Bowden. He has developed cutting-edge techniques to stand out, win trust and grow profits through the power of communication. Some would call him a body language expert. I believe he is much more than that. He runs a company called Truthplane. He's written the bestselling business books Winning Body Language, Winning Body Language for Sales Professionals and Tame the Primitive Brain. Mark is also the co-creator of online course, Presentation Genius. Mark has a highly viewed TEDx talk and his YouTube Channel has over 3 million views. His latest book, Truth & Lies - What People Are Really Thinking (which is co-authored by Tracey Thomson) is incredible. Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #618 - What Creative People Want With Bonnie Siegler May 13, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #618 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.

Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #618 - Host: Mitch Joel. I first met Bonnie Siegler abut a decade ago. We were both new to the TED community and would (randomly) run into each other. I knew she was a graphic designer and led a creative studio, but I had no idea just how respected and regarded she was in the design world. Over the years she has become one of the most respected graphic designers in the world. Bonnie is the founder of Eight and a Half. Her impressive clients include The New Yorker, Late Night with Seth Meyers, HBO, The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and many more. Prior to Eight and a Half, Bonnie co-founded the design studio Number 17, and their clients included Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, Sex and the City, Foreign Affairs Magazine and more. While at Number 17, Bonnie also served as Creative Director of Newsweek after overseeing its complete redesign. Bonnie is now the author of two books: Dear Client (which is a guide for people who work with creatives) and Signs of Resistance (which is a visual history of protest in America). Bonnie was voted one of the 50 most influential designers working today by Graphic Design USA and was a featured designer in the Art Director Club's Legacy Project. She served as the chairman of the 2013 AIGA national design conference. In this episode, we focused on her new book, Dear Client and what businesses need to work better with creative people. Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #617 - Uncover The Power Of Real Networking With David Burkus May 06, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #617 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.

Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #617 - Host: Mitch Joel. I just love everything that this human being puts out into the world. His latest book, Friend of a Friend, is a fascinating read about how we can get the most out of our networks and relationships (and, no, it's not about social media!). David Burkus is a best-selling author, a sought after speaker, and associate professor of leadership and innovation at Oral Roberts University. He's delivered keynotes to the leaders of Fortune 500 companies and the future leaders of the United States Naval Academy. His TED talk, Why you should know how much your coworkers get paid, has been viewed close to two million times, and he is a regular contributor to Harvard Business Review. He's written three books: The Myths of Creativity, Under New Management and now Friend of a Friend. This new book is surprising in nature. It's a fresh perspective on how to grow your network and build key connections -- one based on the science of human behavior, not rote networking advice that worked for one individual over the course of their career. So, is there science behind how people connect and grow their wealth? Listen in. Enjoy the conversation...

Welcome to episode #615 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.

Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #615 - Host: Mitch Joel. If you're going to write and publish a book called, Brands and Bulls**t - Excel at the Former, Avoid the Latter. A Branding Primer for Millennial Marketers in a Digital Age, it's bound to get my attention. Bernie Schroeder was born in Austria, but is currently the director at the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center where he teaches entrepreneurship courses at San Diego State University. Bernie is a dreamer and a doer. His career involved being a professional marketer that led to the building of an agency called, CKS| Partners. This was one of the first integrated marketing agencies with more than 25 offices and 2,500 employees. He became a brand expert and helped to launch brands like Yahoo! and Amazon. Back in 2015, he published his first book, Fail Fast or Win Big. His second book, Simply Brilliant, came out in 2016. And now, he's back to call BS on brands... and much more. Welcome to episode #614 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.

Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #614 - Host: Mitch Joel. There are so many books on how to generate leads, close the sale, negotiate the sale, market the products and services and on and on. How many books have you read (or seen) about how to not lose the customer once you get them? You might think that once you have a customer, that you have them for life. Not even close. Joey Coleman has a unique ability. He is laser focused on how brands need to think once they have closed the sale. It's not just an ideology, either. It's a system. His latest book, Never Lose A Customer Again - Turn Any Sale Into Lifelong Loyalty in 100 Days is rocketing up the charts of every bestseller list... and for good reason. For over a decade, Joey has helped organizations retain their best customers and turn them into raving fans via his entertaining and actionable keynotes, workshops, and consulting projects. He has a long history of energizing and motivating audiences to enhance their customers' experiences. He is an award-winning speaker, and now he has packed that insight into a very important book. SPOS #613 - Tom Peters Is Back And Demands Excellence Apr 08, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #613 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.

Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #613 - Host: Mitch Joel. There is only one Tom Peters. He's a legend. Literally. For anyone in business, Tom Peters is the gold standard. From his countless bestsellers (In Search of Excellence, Re-Imagine, and on and on) to his incredible public presentations. He's a personal mentor to me (whether he wants to admit it or not) and I can best define him as a "cranky optimist." Tom is back with a brilliant new book (seriously, drop everything and go out and get it) called, The Excellence Dividend - Meeting The Tech Tech With Work That Wows And Jobs. Tom spent a significant amount of his earlier years in California, mainly Silicon Valley (where he was on a list of "100 most powerful people in Silicon Valley"), from 1965-2000. Tom is a civil engineering graduate of Cornell, where he was included in the book The 100 Most Notable Cornellians, and he earned an MBA and a Ph.D. in business at Stanford. He holds multiple honorary doctorates as well and has been honored by dozens of associations in content areas such as management, leadership, quality, human resources, customer service, innovation, marketing, and design. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1966-1970, where he made two deployments to Vietnam (as a combat engineer in the fabled Navy Seabees) and "survived a tour in the Pentagon." He was a White House/OMB drug-abuse advisor in 1973-1974, and then he worked at McKinsey & Co. from 1974-1981, becoming a partner in 1979. He also co-founded McKinsey's now gargantuan Organization Effectiveness practice. In 1981, Tom founded Skunkworks Inc. and The Tom Peters Company. As for his book? Just take a look here. After his many (many) years dealing and consulting with the top brands and business leaders in the world, his latest book, The Excellence Dividend is truly of the moment. From Tom's perch, there is perspective, insight and power that every person in business must pay attention to (and learn from). Enjoy the conversation...

From the music you like to how you think about work... and family... and beyond. That's how it has been as Laura Gassner Otting and I have become friends in the past few years. Laura helps innovators, idealists, and iconoclasts get unstuck and achieve their best results. It's not just your standard motivation stuff... far from it. SPOS #610 - How To Hire Great Marketers With Tim Matthews Mar 18, 2018

Welcome to episode #610 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.

Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #610 - Host: Mitch Joel. I came across Tim Matthews via LinkedIn. He had published an article titled, How to Hire Great Inbound Marketers: Six Key Personality Traits. From there, I discovered a well of fascinating content on how to nurture and hire great marketers and how to think differently about inbound marketing and content marketing that he had written. Tim was born in New York City and grew up in a nearby leafy suburb of New Jersey, before taking the long route to Silicon Valley through Tokyo. He has worked in high tech for twenty years and managed marketing teams at six companies. When not writing or poring over marketing texts, he golfs, crosswords, and tries to keep up with his wife on a standup paddleboard. He has published two books: The Professional Marketer and The SaaS Marketing Handbook. Currently, he is the Chief Marketing Officer at Exabeam, a security intelligence company.
