SPOS #699 - Ron Tite On Think Do Say Dec 01, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #699 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #699 - Host: Mitch Joel. These are the hard conversations to have (from a professional standpoint). Ron Tite and I are very close friends. It's rare that a day goes by without some point of connectivity (a train of texts, a call, etc…). I've admired his work, his thinking, his humor and his ideas from the day that we first met. Ron has been an award-winning advertising writer and creative director for some of the world's most respected brands. He is Founder and CEO of Church+State (originally The Tite Group), a content marketing agency and publisher of, This is That Travel Guide to Canada – a best-selling, award-winning satirical book from the creators of CBC Radio's hit show, This Is That. His past work includes being Executive Producer & Host of the award-winning comedy show, Monkey Toast, in addition to writing for a number of television series, penning a children's book, and writing, performing, and producing the play The Canadian Baby Bonus. In demand as a speaker on innovation, branding and content marketing, Ron continues to speak to leading organizations all over the world about "The Expression Economy" – his take on modern business. His first book, Everyone's An Artist (Or At Least They Should Be), was published in 2016. His latest (and greatest) book is Think Do Say, looks at how consumers now vote with their wallet and their time. He even has a podcast of his own, and it's call, The Coup. Always filled with interesting perspectives, this is a show that you do not want to miss. Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #697 - Neil Pasricha Says You're Awesome (And You Are) Nov 17, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #697 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #697 - Host: Mitch Joel. I'm a very lucky human being. I get to call Neil Pasricha my friend. Neil is the author of six books. Let's start with, The Book of Awesome, a spinning rolodex of simple pleasures based on his 100-million-hit, award-winning blog, 1000 Awesome Things. Then there's, The Happiness Equation, originally written as a 300-page love letter to his unborn son on how to live a happy life. After that was, Awesome Is Everywhere, an interactive introduction to guided meditation for children. He then published, How To Get Back Up, a memoir of failure and resilience released as an Audible Original. He is a publishing juggernaut. His books are New York Times and #1 international bestsellers, and have sold millions of copies across dozens of languages. He also speak to groups (a lot). His first TED talk, The 3 A's of Awesome, is ranked as one of the 10 Most Inspiring of all time, and his second is called, How do you maximize your tiny, short life?, an artistic side-project called the world's first TED Listen, composed entirely of questions. His podcast is a personal favorite as well. It's called 3 Books, and it's a 15-year-long mission to uncover and discuss the 1000 most formative books in the world. Each of the 333 chapters unpacks the 3 most formative books of an inspiring individual like Judy Blume, Chris Anderson of TED, the world's greatest Uber driver, or David Sedaris. His latest book is titled, You Are Awesome - How to navigate change, wrestle with failure and live an intentional life. Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #695 - Marcus Sheridan On Great Sales And Better Marketing Nov 03, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #695 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #695 - Host: Mitch Joel. Long before Marcus Sheridan became one of the most sought-after speakers and trainers in the world, he was just some dude I saw speak on a small stage in front of an unsuspecting audience. Sometimes, you just know it when you see it. That day, I saw it. The "it factor" in Marcus. Speaking, teaching and training audiences to think differently (and better) about their sales and marketing in one of the most captivating ways. Since then, I have watched Marcus' massive ascent. From just another pool salesperson, into what he is now. He is the author of the bestselling book, They Ask, You Answer. As I alluded to, Marcus' story didn't begin on the stage. It started with a business created and run out of the back of a beat-up pickup truck. Marcus' experience of saving his swimming pool company, River Pools and Spas, from the economic collapse of 2008 has been featured in multiple books, publications and university case studies from around the world. From its humble beginnings as a three-person company to one of the largest manufacturers and installers in the country, River Pools and Spas has the most visited pool website in the world. From there, he built his sales and marketing consultancy, The Sales Lion, and in early 2018 that company merged with Impact, where they are now building a leading sales and marketing agency. With that, he recently updated and revised his book, They Ask, You Answer. Enjoy the conversation...

    Show notes

Welcome to episode #694 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #694 - Host: Mitch Joel. Before it was even a thing, Diane Mulcahy created the first course in the United States on the gig economy and teaches it in the MBA program at Babson College. The course gained immediate traction and was named by Forbes as one of the Top Ten Most Innovate Business School Courses. Out of that course grew a book. Diane is the author of The Gig Economy. She also walks her talk. She works independently, remotely and flexibly in the gig economy as a consultant, advisor, speaker, writer and teacher. Diane has been an investor for the past fifteen years. She is an Advisor to the Kauffman Foundation, where she manages the private equity and venture capital portfolio. She is also the author of We Have Met the Enemy …and He Is Us, a widely read report on the VC industry. In this episode we dig deep into the future of work, if the gig economy is tenable for our society, and the evils of the big market caps and over-promising based on the gig economy (Uber and WeWork much?). Google's Digital Marketing Evangelist, bestselling author (Web Analytics - An Hour A Day and Web Analytics 2.0), powerful writer (Occam's Razor), friend and business big brain, Avinash Kaushik. His articles may as well be business books, and his insights into what should really count today for business leaders is refreshing. He's got an attitude, he is full of passion, and he has some ideas about what we all need to be thinking about, in this day and age. Avinash has an incredible newsletter titled, The Marketing-Analytics Intersect (you best sign up for it), and we're back to discuss the power of analytics, why we have too much data, why brands should stop their social media posts, and whether all of this tech hate is well placed. SPOS #692 - Alexa, Tell Me More About Smart Audio With James Vlahos Oct 13, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #692 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #692 - Host: Mitch Joel. In case you have not noticed, I could not be more bullish on the power of Smart Audio. From smart speakers and Alexa to Google's voice assistant technology, chatbots and artificial intelligence. This space has been looked at analyzed in the book, Talk To Me - How voice computing will transform the way we live, work and think by James Vlahos. James is a journalist (who has written for the New York Times, Popular Science, The Atlantic and Wired). He wrote a cover story in 2017 for Wired , which was all about his startup (now called HereAfter), which - at the time - was really a chronicle of how he programmed his own AI chatbot to resemble his late father. This program, called DadBot, has evolved. The smart audio space continues to evolve. When people ask me what the future of technology is, Smart Audio is at the top of my list. So let's dive in deep, and see what's got everyone talking. Enjoy the conversation…

SPOS #691 - The Collaborative Advantage With Paul Skinner Oct 06, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #691 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #691 - Host: Mitch Joel. There are some books that hit my desk and captivate me. That was my reaction to Paul Skinner's book, Collaborative Advantage - How collaboration beats competition as a strategy for success. This is Paul's antidote to competitive advantage, and a new perspective in how to think about your brand and the future of business. Paul works at Agency of the Future, and is also the founder of the social enterprise, Pimp My Cause. Pimp My Cause brings together marketers and good causes to create transformational pro bono projects for social good. Paul often describes Pimp My Cause as a living laboratory of collaborative advantage in action. The Cabinet Office named Paul as one of the UK's leading social entrepreneurs. He is an advisory board member for the Museum of Brands and an advisor for the Future Strategy Club. Enjoy the conversation...

SPOS #690 - Newsy And The State of News With Blake Sabatinelli Sep 29, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to episode #690 of Six Pixels of Separation.

Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #690 - Host: Mitch Joel. I'm on mission to add different types of audio content to this show. Last week, I was asked to moderate at session at the InfoPresse event, Platforms (here in Montreal). I had the chance to speak with Blake Sabatinelli about the state of media, the news and his growing organization, Newsy. Blake is CEO of Newsy. Prior to joining the organization, Blake oversaw video strategy at Newsy's parent company, The E.W. Scripps Company. Blake has a long history in both news and digital strategy. A native Texan, he started his career as a digital producer at ABC Action News in Tampa, and was later promoted to executive producer, managing a team of producers and overseeing editorial operations. Blake later led the digital strategy and operations at WJLA and News Channel 8 in Washington, D.C. For those who are not familiar, Newsy is quickly becoming the source for concise, unbiased video news and analysis covering the top stories from around the world. With persistent curiosity and no agenda, Newsy strives to fuel meaningful conversations by highlighting multiple sides of every story. Newsy prides itself on delivering the news and perspective you need without the hype and bias common to many news sources. With that, Newsy streams a 24-hour network that is focused on over-the-top environments (OTT). This includes Newsy's apps for connected TV platforms such as Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Roku, as well as distribution deals Newsy has signed with streaming pay-TV services such as Sling TV and YouTube TV. In you look around, many in the media see Newsy as one of the fastest growing news companies in the world. Enjoy the conversation...
