Session 197: ADHD Diagnosis Later In Life Mar 03, 2021
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

According to this article, ADHD symptoms in girls are often explained as character traits rather than ADHD. Girls might be thought of as spacey, as day-dreamer, forgetful, or chatty. Later in life, a woman might reach out for help for her ADHD, only to be diagnosed with depression or anxiety instead. To help us explore what it might look like to have a diagnosis of ADHD later in life, I am joined today by two very special guests. Inger Shaye Colzie, LCSW and René Brooks. During our conversations we chatted about the impact of being diagnosed with ADHD later in life, why Black women are commonly misdiagnosed, how a later in life diagnosis impacts things like self esteem and identity and some helpful tools and resources for anyone who may need them.

Session 196: Understanding Complex PTSD Feb 24, 2021
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

While many of us may be familiar with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), you might be less familiar with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD). To help us understand the differences between the two and to provide some context for C-PTSD, today I’m joined by Licensed Psychologist Dr. Janelle Peifer. Dr. Peifer and I discussed some of the causes of CPTSD, how it impacts interpersonal relationships, how we often overlook experiences as traumatic, an example of what this might look like based on the Duke of Hastings from Bridgerton, and she shares some of her favorite resources for you to dig in a little further.

We haven’t had one of these in a while but this week we’re back with an on the couch episode with Malcolm and Marie. Malcolm and Marie is of course the new movie on Netflix featuring Zendaya and John David Washington. Joining me to break down all of the many layers you can find in the film is Licensed Psychologist, Dr. Ayanna Abrams. Dr. Abrams and I chatted about the dynamics present between Malcolm & Marie, things we noticed while watching the movie, what it might look like for Malcolm & Marie to go to couples therapy after the evening in the film, and the kinds of things she might discuss with Marie if she came to therapy individually. This episode does contain spoilers.

Like many of you I’ve been spending a considerable amount of time watching all of the shows and thought it would be fun to have a little recap of what’s been happening on a couple of my favorites and dig into some of the themes that have popped up. Joining me today to chat about the most recent episodes of This Is Us and Married at First Sight is Beverley Andre, LMFT. Related to This Is Us, Beverley and I chatted about the power of the stories we hold onto in our lives, the impact of grief as shown in the episode, the symbolism of water, and the importance of having nonjudgmental safe spaces like the ones that often exist with our aunties. We also chatted about the newest season of Married at First Sight. We discussed some of our thoughts about the compatibility and readiness of some of the couples, what you might want to think about before choosing to apply for this type of show, our thoughts about what indicates success for the couples, and of course some of the red flags that already seem to be popping up this season. This conversation does include spoilers for both shows!

It's Inauguration Day here in the US and I'm feeling a mix of excitement that the current administration is finally ending and also anxiety about the safety of the day's events. The grief related to the many lives we've lost over the past year also seems to be heavier and heavier each day. If you're feeling similarly, you're not alone. When times are difficult, it's even more important for us to dig deep into taking care of ourselves. In today's episode I'm sharing 8 tips that might help today and in the days ahead and also answering a couple of On the Porch questions.

Session 190: Creating Calm Through Meditation & Affirmations Jan 13, 2021

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

One of the qualities I most appreciate about people who regularly practice mindfulness is the ability to cultivate inner calm despite what is happening on the outside and I think this is definitely something many of us can use more of right now. To help us learn more about mindfulness practices, today we are joined by Wellness educator, Meditation teacher, Reiki Healer, and Author Devi Brown. Devi also serves as the Chief Impact Officer for Chopra Global and is the voice of daily inspiration on the Chopra App.

Devi and I chatted about the wellness practices she incorporates into her life, how to get started with using crystals and primordial sound meditation, the importance of affirmations and she shared a beautiful guided affirmation that can be experienced over and over to help keep you grounded.
