You’ve likely been following the news related to the recently developed COVID-19 vaccines and if you’re like me, you’ve got lots of questions. I recently had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Boghuma Kabisen Titanji who is an infectious disease physician and clinical researcher pursuing a fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine here in Atlanta, Georgia. During our conversation, Dr. Titanji shared how this vaccine is different than others we may have taken, how the vaccine was able to be developed so quickly, and what we might expect after taking the vaccination.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

One of the most common questions we get from the community is why can’t I find a therapist who takes my insurance. There typically isn’t a quick or easy answer to that question so we wanted to cover as many of the details as possible here. Joining us for this conversation is Dr. Cara McNulty, President of Behavioral Health & EAP, Aetna and Dr. Ajita Robinson, Grief Expert & CEO of Mastering Insurance.

Dr. McNulty shared great insights about what kinds of services are offered with insurance plans, how to find the plan that might be the best fit for you, and she shared more about the services Aetna offers to assist the with mental health needs. Dr. Robinson shared some of the reasons therapists might not accept insurance, what is involved with using your insurance for therapy, and resources you can use if you don’t currently have insurance.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

As the days get shorter and the wind gets colder, you might be moving a little slower and feeling a little less motivated. And given the multiple stressors we’ve experienced this year, that’s not at all a surprise. Today we’re joined by Dr. Allycin Powell-Hicks to talk about seasonal affective disorder and how that might be heightening depressive symptoms you might have experienced in the past. Dr. Ally and I discussed tips for managing depressive symptoms, how we can tell if symptoms are something we should be concerned about, how to support ourselves in this very different holiday season, and some of the relationship challenges that have arisen during the pandemic and how to manage them.

While monogamous relationships may be the relationship types we hear about most often, they’re not the only relationships types that exist. To break it all down for us, I was joined by Ruby B. Johnson, LCSW, LCDC. Ruby and I discussed some of the most common misconceptions about consensual non-monogamy, how to determine whether a polyamorous relationship is a good fit for you, some considerations in a polyamorous relationship, how to unpack some of the stigma related to consensual non-monogamy, and of course she shares some of her favorite resources.
