Session 205: The Connection Between Menstrual Health & Mental Health Apr 28, 2021
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Do you remember the conversation you had with your parents, aunties, grandma or friends when you started your menstrual cycle? Whether you’ve realized it or not, the tone and content of that conversation has likely shaped your relationship to your cycle all these years later. To help us dig into how our menstrual cycles may impact our mental health, today I’m joined by Sara Flowers, DrPH, MPH. Dr. Flowers and I chatted about how our cycle changes throughout our lives, the ways that shame often shows up related to our cycles, the importance of having conversations with one another about how our bodies change throughout life, and she shared some great suggestions for how we can talk to the younger people in our lives differently about their cycles.

Session 204: Some Thoughts On Body Image Apr 21, 2021
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Our relationships to our bodies can often be complicated. Messages we get from society, family, and the media often leave us frustrated with our bodies and can lead to unrealistic expectations. To help us get a little clarity in this area, today we’re joined by Paula Edwards-Gayfield, MA, LPCS, LPC, NCC, CEDS-S. Paula and I chatted about how our perceptions of our bodies are formed, how those perceptions have been shaped during the pandemic, what it looks like to have a more connected relationship to our bodies, developing healthy ideas about nutrition, and she shares some of her favorite resources.

Session 202: ICYMI, Shedding Your Superwoman Status Apr 07, 2021
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

This week we're rewinding to a very important conversation that you might have missed here on the podcast. In April 2018 I had a conversation with Dr. Spirit all about how we can shed the superwoman status. Given all that we’ve experienced this year I think it’s a timely reminder to not measure ourselves against unrealistic standards and to recognize that our worth does not come from how much pain we can withstand.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Setting and maintaining boundaries is something we revisit often here on the podcast because I think for many of us there’s always work to be done in this area. One area that we haven't discussed is what boundary setting looks like in the digital world. And who better to join us for this conversation than the woman who has literally written the book about boundaries, Nedra Glover Tawwab, LCSW.

Nedra and I chatted about the 6 different types of boundaries, the differences between codependency and counterdependency, what it looks like to set boundaries in digital spaces, and she shared some reflection questions to help you to get in touch with the boundaries you may need to set.

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

A year ago this week, all of our lives took a very drastic turn. For many of us it marked the last time we worked from the office, the last time kids went to school in person, and the last time we moved about the world without a mask or two. Looking back, it’s really hard to imagine how much would be so different now. Joining me today to chat about what this year has been like and what things might look like moving forward is Gorgeous West, MA,APC,NCC. She and I chatted about what you might expect related to the pandemic anniversary, tips for digging deeper into your self care, managing jealousy and FOMO related to the vaccines, and what we’re looking forward to post pandemic.

Session 197: ADHD Diagnosis Later In Life Mar 03, 2021
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

According to this article, ADHD symptoms in girls are often explained as character traits rather than ADHD. Girls might be thought of as spacey, as day-dreamer, forgetful, or chatty. Later in life, a woman might reach out for help for her ADHD, only to be diagnosed with depression or anxiety instead. To help us explore what it might look like to have a diagnosis of ADHD later in life, I am joined today by two very special guests. Inger Shaye Colzie, LCSW and René Brooks. During our conversations we chatted about the impact of being diagnosed with ADHD later in life, why Black women are commonly misdiagnosed, how a later in life diagnosis impacts things like self esteem and identity and some helpful tools and resources for anyone who may need them.
