Each July, we celebrate Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This year, the theme we’ve chosen is The Skin I’m In.

So often as Black women we’re told it’s okay to be ourselves as long as it doesn’t make others uncomfortable. We’re told to embrace our individuality but in the ways that align neatly with the expression of individuality that’s digestible for society. But what happens when you don’t feel like you fit into the mold? We’re not always shown how to manage the othering and the stigma that comes with it. Well this month, we’re doing exactly that and expanding what it means to show up as a Black woman and sharing words of encouragement to any sisters struggling to accept what feels natural to them.

All month long you can expect content on our blog, here on the podcast, in our Sister Circle community, and across our social media channels to celebrate being authentic to you. We’ll be engaging the ways history has impacted the way we love and value ourselves and tapping into the ways we can combat negative self-image. So be sure to visit us at therapyforblackgirls.com to stay connected and follow us on both IG & FB @therapyforblackgirls or on Twitter at @therapy4bgirls

And if you want to get the inside scoop and reminders about events and conversations for the month, you can text the word 'July' to 504-499-0663.

Recently we've gotten a few questions in the mailbox about how to find the best therapist for you and your needs, so this week I'm offering some things to consider in terms of whether your therapist needs to be Black, questions to ask during your consultation, and getting referrals from friends, family, or colleagues.

Session 213: In The Circle w/ Deleesa Jun 23, 2021
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

Y’all know that I am a huge reality tv fan and one of my favorite newer shows is "The Circle" on Netflix. Season 2 of the show wrapped in May 2021 and there were lots of twists and turns that required the contestants to think quickly on their feet and stay on top of their strategies. As the season progressed, I was paying close attention to the Black women in the game and the choices they were making and how other players were responding to them, and thinking a lot about what kind of strategy I might employ if I were to be on a show like this. Needless to say I had lots of questions and who better to help us answer some of these questions than Season 2 winner, Deleesa St Agathe. Deleesa and I chatted about why she chose to go into the game as her husband Trevor, how she prepared for the game, her thoughts about the perception of Black women on reality tv, how she kept herself busy in isolation, and the surprise of finding out she was expecting while filming.

Session 212: Exploring Father Daughter Relationships Jun 16, 2021
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

We’ve talked here on the podcast about Black women’s relationships with their mothers and many of you have asked us for an expansion of that conversation to discuss relationships with fathers. The term daddy issues is often thrown around, usually callously, to depict the difficulties some believe women have in romantic relationships as a result of the relationship they’ve had with their fathers. Today, we wanted to dig deeper into this to explore how Black women’s relationships with their fathers can impact us. For this conversation we're joined by Nic Hardy. LCSW. Nic and I discussed whether there is an impact on romantic relationships related to our relationship with our fathers, what kinds of qualities lead to healthy father and daughter relationships, healing from a damaged relationship with your father, and he answers some of the questions submitted by community members.

Session 211: How Music & Dance Impact Our Mental Health Jun 09, 2021
    Show notes

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

What’s the song that reminds you of the best night you had out with your girls? Or the one that brings the tears as soon as you hear the beat drop? There is no denying the power that music and dance has on our mood. Well did you know it can be useful in therapy too? In honor of Black Music Month, this week we're chatting all about how music and dance impact our mental health. For this conversation I was joined by Jennifer Sterling, a registered Dance & Movement psychotherapist and holistic nutritionist. Jennifer and I chatted about how she uses dance and movement in her work as a therapist, the concerns it can be useful for, and why dance and music are powerful in helping us heal.

I’m also super excited to share a conversation I had with one of my favorite musical artists, Carmen Rodgers, about her experience as an artist and her thoughts on why investing in your mental health is important as an artist.

Our relationships with religion and spirituality is a long and storied one. As of late, I’ve been seeing more references from sisters exploring African Traditional Religions as a means of reconnecting to parts of our history and wanted to learn more about it. To help us dig a little deeper into this area, today I’m joined by Dr. Dianne Stewart. You may know Michelle Williams as 1/3 of the superstar group Destiny’s Child, but this week she is embarking on a brand new identity as an author with her brand new book, Checking In. In the past couple of years, Michelle has been more open in sharing about the mental health concerns she’s experienced and she is now using her platform to help others to have these conversations to check in with themselves and others. Michelle and I chatted about the various parts of her identity she’s had to navigate throughout her life, the experience of managing depression while being in the spotlight, and keeping some things for yourself as a public figure.
