It’s okay if you cry on Christmas Dec 02, 2022
    Show notes

As the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is in full swing, your hosts wanted to take the time to speak about grief and loss during the “happiest time of the year”. Whether that is a death, a divorce, or even a falling out with a friend, it’s important you take space for yourself. This is the first holiday in 12 years where D has had a significant other, and she reflects on what those hardest years look like, and what came up for her during that time. Last year was the first holiday Jac was alone since her divorce, and offers tips for navigating time with family members who want to ask all the questions…The two discuss things that help to manage grief during the holiday season, and are sure to offer tips for healthcare workers during this time as well. Danielle opens up about what having a partner means for her, and how, while grief never fully goes away, it gets easier to manage as your life grows around it.

The notorious flu with Dr. Purvi Parikh (...& D has a boyfriend) Nov 25, 2022
    Show notes

Happy Thanksgiving WoMed fam! Rapid fire good news bad news…bad news first, Jac’s sick…but good news, DANIELLE HAS A BOYFRIEND! After a virtual diagnosis from nurse D, we get the cutest update ever on Dani and Michael. Your hosts then welcome back immunologist, allergist, and medical expert for all the major news networks, the incredible Dr. Purvi Parikh to talk about the flu. This is the worst flu season in 13 years, and Dr. Parikh explains the combination of reasons why she thinks this is the case. The chat about how allergies, a cold, the flu, and Covid symptoms can be identical, and the number of people who don’t care to get the flu shot (not cool). Dr. Parikh discusses the misconceptions around the flu and flu shot, the importance of not opting to mask up instead of getting vaccinated, and shares what you can do in addition to getting vaccinated to keep people safe as we gather for the holidays. This is your cautionary reminder that the flu is deadly, especially for children, and it should be taken seriously. It’s not too late to get the shot! Happy holidays y’all, we love ya!

His terminal illness is saving my life: testing for the BRCA mutation with Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider Nov 18, 2022
    Show notes

Today’s instalment of DMs in the DMs sets the tender tone for today’s episode, as D shares a message she received about grief. Your hosts then welcome back Internal Medicine Physician and founder of End Well, Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider, to update everyone on significant personal changes since we last heard from her. Her father has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, and she herself has been found to be BRCA positive. Dr. Shoshana is on a mission to let people know that this mutation is incredibly prevalent, and that the testing for it needs to increase. If it weren’t for her dad’s illness, she would have never thought to test. She shares why she thinks providers aren’t aware of the link with the BRCA gene, how the mutation may actually extend her father’s life, how it’s important for men to get tested as well, and the lifestyle changes she’s made as a result of testing positive. For many people, genetic testing may be covered if you have a first degree relative with certain types of cancer, but if you’re not, you can seek out a genetic counselor and decide with them if it makes sense for you to be tested. This episode dispels the myth of BRCA only being associated with breast cancer, highlights the importance of knowing your family history, and touches on the balance of being both a provider and a family member of someone suffering. We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Shoshana for her honesty and vulnerability, and hope to assist her in advocating for increased access to genetic testing.

Listen to our last episode with Dr. Shoshana here. You can also find her article in Newsweek here and can seek a genetic counselor at findageneticcounselor.nsgc.org.

Dating in your 30s: butterflies = toxic flying worms Nov 11, 2022
    Show notes

    TW: weight and body image

On top of Danielle dating on national television, both of your hosts are now dating in their 30s, which is uncharted territory for Jac. So, this episode is all about dating — whether it be IRL, on the apps, or on a popular television show, they cover it all! D opens up about her best efforts dating on the apps, and Jac emphasizes the importance of giving yourself time to heal and grieve a past relationship before jumping in to a new one. She also shares a tip she heard that said finding a long-term partner is similar to finding a business partner when it comes to the qualities you should be looking for. They also cover how different they find dating in their 30s, as opposed to in their 20s, as the type of men they look for changed with the increase of self-confidence that comes with age. Plus, let’s be honest...more people can afford therapy in their 30s, and that’s a bonus for everyone involved. However, they don’t want you to think it’s all sunshine and roses, as they dive in to the insecurities that come up still while dating. They share their ideal first dates, and how awkward first dates aren’t necessarily a bad thing! They also touch on toxic masculinity and how we may be perpetuating toxic archetypes, the pressure of having kids as you get older, and freezing your eggs (something that interests them both). Lastly, Jac leaves us with a horrible first date experience she had recently. Hey, all good Jac… on to the next!!

Be in your body: the practice of sensuality with Ev'Yan Whitney Nov 04, 2022
    Show notes

Sexuality doula, author, and podcast host Ev’Yan Whitney joins The WoMed today to discuss sensuality and how we can all be more in touch with ourselves. Before they chat, Danielle opens up about her recent struggles with feeling uncomfortable in her body in light of being back on television. A lot of what is getting her through this tough time comes from what she learned from Ev’Yan, and we hope this conversation is equally as valuable to you. As Ev’Yan explains, sensuality is not necessarily about sexuality or sexiness, but more so the practice of paying attention with your senses, and being fully awake to the feelings and emotions coming up for you. There will of course be times where you feel disconnected from your body, especially if you struggle with your mental health, but it’s important that it doesn’t become your baseline. They also discuss how the experience of simply being comfortable in your body can often be harder than the act of having sex, as we often put on a performance, or a costume, in place of being in the moment. They discuss the internalized narratives about what sexuality is supposed to look like, and how porn is unfortunately but should not be used as an educational tool. The three also discuss accepting your aging body, body neutrality, and how sensuality encompasses acknowledging the full spectrum of who you are. Ev’Yan wants to make sensuality and embodiment more accessible, and provides tips and advice for us all to hopefully get one step closer.

Everybody’s got different bodies with Human Dissector Mrs. Angemi Oct 28, 2022
    Show notes

This week’s episode starts with a brand-new segment, DM in the DMs, where D (M) shares a unique DM she received as a result of being on television again. This week, it has to do with eyebrow transplants...On another note, D can barely contain her excitement as one of her dream guests hops on the mic. Human Dissector Nicole Angemi joins The WoMed for a spook-tacular Halloweekend episode! She speaks about what drew her to the “gross” and how her career in pathology came to be. Her popular Instagram account shows photos of death, near death, accidents, preventable and non-preventable diseases, along with educational information for the everyday person to discover. Seeing something in real life that you normally only see in textbook might only happen once in your career, but with Nicole’s Instagram page, she can deliver an extensive education to masses. She speaks to an incredible by-product of her page, which is combating ableism with knowledge. Nicole then talks about the process of creating her new book, and how she picked which diseases to highlight. While people working in hospitals often only have access to the specimen around them, the following Nicole has amassed gives her access to photos and stories from around the world. For those of you who are a bit queasy, your hosts also discuss Nicole’s other account that highlights how beautiful genetics can be. D and Jac are so excited about this episode, and we hope you enjoy! Happy Halloween!!

    Show notes

The WoMed’s best kept secret is out—your girl is in, Paradise! The beach just got that much hotter as our sweet D made her appearance. We cannot WAIT to watch her “journey” unfold. We hope you loved our episode last week full of beauty faves! Your hosts had even more faves they wanted to share with you, so they needed a part 2. This episode covers even more ground, first with a pre-NP plan of care from Dr. Jaclyn Camardo for patient Danielle who has heartburn. The two then jump in to TV shows, and discuss the importance of balancing, say, The Handmaid’s Tale with Abbott Elementary. Danielle chats about Don’t Worry Darling and all the drama surrounding it, and, in light of D being on TV, they chat about self-care and prioritizing mental health. They then hop in to fall fashion, music, and staples in their purse. They also discover they have the same fave perfume brand, DedCool! They wrap up with D sharing her favorite thing she brought to the beach, and Jac’s fave thing, which is watching her bestie on TV.
