    We Won’t Go Back to 1973 Jul 15, 2022
    Show notes

Season 5... Can you believe it?! Season 5 kicks off as we transition to Friday episodes, and we’re coming in HOT with this first episode, addressing the Supreme Court’s ruling on Roe V. Wade. After admiring Jackie’s Under the Tuscan Sun moment, your hosts dive into this subject... and how we can even have conversations around this heated topic. The two touch on the argument for adoption, and how it minimizes the reality of what everyone actually goes through in that process. They also express concern for everyone being re-traumatized by this frenzy, and share how they felt when they heard the news. D and Jackie make sure to address the horrifying birth outcomes in this country, especially for people of color, and lastly, they cover Biden’s executive order which offers some hope as we work through this. What this all comes down to is the value of privacy and choice over your bodily autonomy, and how no belief, religious or otherwise, should dictate how the entire country proceeds.

Fixing the Broken Long-Term Care Industry with Dr. Buffy Lloyd-Krejci Jun 27, 2022
    Show notes

Dr. Buffy Lloyd-Krejci is one of the foremost authorities on infection prevention and control in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, and it’s safe to say she has never done things halfway. From a young age, she had a curiosity for healthcare and mathematics, and intertwined those two passions to ultimately found her own practice, IPCWell, consulting with health care facilities across the country. She joins Danielle and Jackie to shed light on a population that is often left far behind, the elderly. When she first started working in nursing homes and quickly realized that long-term care fell to the bottom of everyone’s list, she had to ask herself and those around her: Why aren’t we doing more about this? So, she decided to do something! Jackie, Danielle, and Dr. Buffy discuss the misconceptions about nursing homes, the lack of care for the elderly population as a whole, and tangible next steps we can take to make a change within a historically overlooked industry. Dr. Buffy will inspire you to want to take action in your local community and spread awareness about the broken system that is long-term care. If you were inspired by this episode, be sure to grab a copy of Dr. Buffy’s book BROKEN: How the Global Pandemic uncovered a nursing home industry in need of repair and heroic staff fighting for change.

Women in Dentistry with Kairavi and Baz: My First Name is Doctor Jun 13, 2022
    Show notes

This episode is what The WoMed is all about — women celebrating other women in healthcare! Jackie and Danielle chat with Kairavi and Baz about women in dentistry, including the unique value they bring to the field. However, they also share the unfortunate discrimination they’ve faced as a result of being women, and Baz discusses her tumultuous journey to becoming a dentist. The patriarchy runs deep in healthcare, and dentistry especially is a field dominated by white men. Your guests offer advice for females and people of color thinking of applying to dentistry, and share why they both wanted to be dentists. Patient outcomes are better when you see yourself in your provider, and with providers like Kairavi and Baz, the future of the field is in great hands.

Gun Violence is a Public Health Crisis Jun 06, 2022
    Show notes

    TW: Gun Violence

In light of yet another mass shooting, this time at an Elementary School in Texas, your hosts discuss gun violence and the need for it to be examined as a public health crisis. They highlight the reality that mass shootings, while devastating, are still just a small part of the picture, as gun violence is a daily reality for many. The ease at which people can purchase weapons is alarming, especially considering guns are the leading method for suicide in America. Thinking of gun violence as a public health issue would bring this fact into more discussions. Jackie discusses her career in Chicago, and the horrible reality of gun violence in that city — disproportionately so for people of color. Lastly, your hosts share ways you can use your voice to speak out and get involved, which they highly encourage.

Resources we encourage you to explore further:

    • Students Demand Action
    • Sandy Hook Promise
