You Need To Calm Down Nov 03, 2021
    Show notes

Throw a stone at a wellness expert and they’ll tell you that mindfulness and stress reduction are the keys to living a long and healthy life. Additionally, last year the American Psychological Association reported that 2 in 3 adults described feeling significant stress over the course of the pandemic; a statistic that doesn’t seem to be decreasing any time soon. Despite chronic stress not being taken as seriously as other conditions by some medical practitioners, we are learning more and more how stress impacts the body in a very real way, and no, it’s not “all in your head.” While no one is certain what the next year will look like, one thing is absolutely certain: we need to calm down… but how do we do it?

HOST: Kate Spies, SVP+General Manager at Well+Good

    GUESTS:

Dora Kamau, Mindfulness & Meditation Teacher at Headspace and Registered Psychiatric Nurse

Dr. Melinda Ring, Executive Director of Northwestern Medicine's Osher Center for Integrative Medicine

    WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT:

Dora differentiates between short-term and long-term stress, and how we can learn to understand and manage each form in our own lives. Find her here and check out Headspace here.

Dr. Melinda explains how the mind-body connection is not just superficial, and how stress can cause real, chemical changes in our bodies. Find her here.

Your Life Is Not A Highlight Reel Oct 20, 2021
    Show notes

If asked to DTR with social media, many of us would answer: it’s complicated. When Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp went down on October 4, 2021, it became impossible to ignore how complicated that relationship really is. On the one hand, we got a day to check back in with ourselves IRL, but on the other… Many of us would be ashamed to admit how many times we checked to see if the apps were back up and running. When it comes to being sucked into the scroll, are we as individual consumers entirely to blame? It’s clear that whether we like it or not, most of us are in a committed relationship with social media, so how do we make it better?

HOST: Taylor Camille, Sr. Producer at Well+Good

    GUESTS:

Bea Arthur, LMHC, Founder and CEO of The Difference

Tanya Goodin, Author, Speaker, Founder of Time To Log Off

The Inflammatory Language of Inflammation Oct 13, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to “Inflammation Nation,” where the bigger picture of the many factors that affect our health and well-being tends to get overlooked. Additionally, as is the case when it comes to any over-inflated wellness buzzword, there are always plenty of people and places trying to sell us the magic cure-all… anti-inflammatory granola bar, anyone? When it comes to inflammation, it’s safe to say that the implications of the word itself have gotten... over-inflamed. What do we need to pay attention to when it comes to inflammation in the body and what is just inflammatory language?

    GUESTS:

Shana Spence, MS, RDN, CDN, Founder of The Nutrition Tea

    Runner's High Oct 06, 2021
    Show notes

Many of us have a very distinct picture in our minds when it comes to your typical runner: Someone who hops out of bed first thing in the morning without hesitation, laces up their sneakers, and covers miles on end without ever running out of breath or breaking a sweat. The reality? Running is an individual practice that looks different for everyone. In this episode, we hear from four trailblazers in the running space who are redefining what it means to be a runner and how nurturing our relationship with the sport is more important than how fast, how far, or how often we run.

    Therapy IRL Sep 29, 2021
    Show notes

As we head into the final months of 2021, one thing is abundantly clear: it’s okay to say that we’re not okay. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five adults in the U.S. live with a mental illness; a situation that’s only been made worse by the pandemic. With more people than ever standing up for their mental health and seeking out therapy for the first time, another crack in the system has been revealed–there aren’t enough therapists to match the demand. Enter: the rise of digital talkspaces. While these spaces help to make therapy more affordable and accessible, are we missing out on the benefits of talking to someone in-person? In a world where almost everything else we do is online, what does the future of therapy look like?

HOST: Kate Spies, SVP+General Manager at Well+Good

    GUESTS:

Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, Licensed Psychologist, Founder & CEO of Therapy for Black Girls

Dr. Amy Cirbus, Ph.D, LMHC, LPC, Director of Clinical Content at Talkspace

    WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT:

Dr. Joy shares how we can choose the therapist that is the best fit for us, and advises that while following therapists on Instagram can be a helpful tool–the work doesn’t stop there. Find her here and check out Therapy for Black Girls here.

Dr. Amy explains how the flexibility of online therapy can have a positive impact on our overall mental health. Plus, she shares her thoughts on what a hybrid model for therapy could look like. Check out Talkspace here.

    Phasing Out The ‘Fit-Fluencer’ Sep 22, 2021
    Show notes

When it comes to seeking out fitness information online, there is certainly no shortage of content. It seems that everywhere you look, there are posts promising that “burning,” “toning,” and “shredding” any body part of choice is just a double tap away. While the goal of many ‘fit-fluencers’ is to get people moving, how do we separate what works vs. what sells? Oftentimes, it’s easy to be reeled in by swipe-ups and sweat sets in favor of certifications and qualifications. When it comes to seeking out the best fitness advice for our individual lifestyles and goals, where do we draw the line between expert and influencer?

HOST: Ella Dove, Director, Creative Development at Well+Good

    GUESTS:

Charlee Atkins, Founder and CEO of Le Sweat, former Soul Cycle Master Instructor

Simone de la Rue, Health and Life Coach, Celebrity Trainer, Creator of Body by Simone

Dr. Rick Richey, Educator for The National Academy for Sports Medicine (NASM), Doctor of Health Science, Masters of Exercise Science

    WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT:

Charlee breaks down where the terms “burn,” “tone,” and “lengthen” come from, and how we can learn to make smarter consumer choices when it comes to finding workouts online. Follow Charlee here and check out Le Sweat here.

Simone shares her thoughts on the rise of the ‘fit-fluencer’ as a lifelong fitness professional who has devoted her life and career to getting people moving. Check her out here and Body By Simone here.

Dr. Rick reveals the two things you should be looking out for to determine if an online fitness program is a good fit for you. Find him here and check out NASM here.

Why We Work Sep 15, 2021
    Show notes

After over a year of much of the workforce operating remotely, we are entering a period of time that many experts are calling “The Great Resignation.” According to The US Labor Department, nearly four million people have quit their jobs... some with back-up plans and others without. For many workers, the future is still uncertain: some companies have opted for permanent hybrid models while others continue to push back the return-to-office date month after month. Regardless of their profession, more and more workers are taking stock: Is it possible to finally kick burnout to the curb? Is a work-life balance actually achievable, or just aspirational? As the pandemic continues to shake things up at a rapid clip, it is time to re-evaluate how and why we work.

HOST: Kate Spies, SVP+General Manager at Well+Good

    GUESTS:

Dr. Krystal Conner, Life and Career Coach

Megan Hellerer, Career Coach for Underfulfulled Overachievers

Jazmine Reed-Clarke, Career and Wellness Coach

Megan Hellerer breaks down how we can take a more targeted approach to our careers and shift from blind ambition to aligned ambition. Find her here.
