UVP 151 Doctor Sensitive Can’t Take Criticism Nov 17, 2021
    Show notes

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a letter from the mailbag. A practice owner wrote in, feeling very frustrated by an associate doctor on their team who is struggling significantly with self confidence and their belief in themselves as a good doctor. It seems like any time someone on the team asks questions about a patient’s care or double checks a drug dose or asks to look at x-rays and discuss what the doctor is seeing, Dr. Sensitive takes those as personal affronts and explodes in anger or tears. They feel like the team doesn’t trust them and doesn't act like they believe they are a good doctor. Our practice owner is wondering what to do since it feels like a lot of is being blown out of proportion and aren’t things they themselves would be fussed over. Let’s get into this... HOF Episode 113 This week on the Uncharted Veterinary Podcast, Dr. Andy Roark and Practice Management Goddess Stephanie Goss go to the mailbag: “We are short staffed and getting shorter by the minute. Where do you find good people? We need to hire at least 1 person in every role. Our morale is at an all time low and people are burnt out. We need to save the ship before it goes down.” AND “Alrighty!! I’m in a pickle! I canNOT seem to get Veterinary Technician applicants. I have posted on Indeed, Facebook and LinkdIn. We are so short staffed and it’s starting to take its toll on everyone. How do I find a Vet Tech worth hiring?!” Let’s get into this episode! UVP 147 The Team is Acting Badly Oct 20, 2021
    Show notes

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a topic they were discussing with a colleague recently. This colleague is in a position where they bought a practice a few years ago that came with a handful of toxic team members. Those people have self ejected or been weeded out and the team has been working in synergy for some time. However the last few months, the griping and the passive aggressive comments have snuck in. People are eye rolling at each other and biting each other's heads off over little things. This practice owner is feeling defeated and is also determined to get their positive culture back and hold the team accountable. Since everyone is involved, they are planning a team meeting to discuss. The practice owner wanted to know a few things about how best to set it up - they asked some great specific questions: Do I bring up specific examples of things people have done/have been doing? How hard do I come down on them for future incidents? How do I get them to correct their behavior and be accountable for their actions, without driving them out? Let’s get into this... UVP 146 Moving On Up (From Small GP to Big Hybrid Practice) Oct 13, 2021
    Show notes

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie discuss a question that a colleague recently asked to get advice from their fellow leaders. Moving Up Manager asked for advice in making the transition from managing a small mom-and-pop GP practice that has long term clientele and lower prices to managing a brand new high-end, boutique ER/Specialty practice. They were looking for advice on how to handle the different types of client service issues that may be unique to each type of practice as well as general advice for making that kind of transition. When Andy and Stephanie started discussing the question, they quickly agreed that there are probably a lot more similarities than differences. Let’s get into this... UVP 145 Letting Go of the “I Am Giving My Notice” Guilt Oct 06, 2021
    Show notes

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a topic from the mailbag. Dr. Fed Up writes in and asks for help with letting go of their guilt over giving their notice at their new practice. Dr. Fed Up was hired as a new grad and promised support and mentorship. Fast forward to the present where they are often working alone with no other DVM present in the building and tackling a full surgical caseload that they don’t feel confident tackling. Dr. Fed Up wants to quit and move on to something that would be a better fit for them but is struggling with 3 questions - How do I tell them why I am leaving, how much notice do I give and do I feel guilty that the leaders of this practice may have to close a location (temporarily or permanently) due to lack of DVMs? Let’s get into this... Links: Upcoming events: https://unchartedvet.com/upcoming-events/ The October Uncharted Veterinary Culture Conference is ALMOST HERE!! UVP 144 The Vet Who Won’t Go Home Sep 29, 2021
    Show notes

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle a topic they were discussing with a colleague recently. This colleague is in a position where they are managing an awesome veterinarian - they are providing solid, high quality care, the clients and team adore them and everything is pretty great. Except that this veterinarian seems to be at the clinic CONSTANTLY. They are working 3-4 hours after their shift has ended each day. They are not only making themselves available to their team, they are also actively communicating about cases and patients on their days off. They cannot seem to unplug from their patients/clients and leave work at work. Our colleague was expressing their serious concern for Dr. Works-A-Lot. They are worried about their mental and physical health and wellbeing. They are worried about and care for this vet. They do not want to see them burn out! They spoke to Dr. Works-A-Lot and it got very emotional. Dr. Works-A-Lot was very upset initially because they felt like they were doing the right thing for their patients and clients by making sure charts were detailed and complete, call backs were all made, they answered all the questions that needed to be answered etc. Dr. Works-A-Lot was seeing things through the lens of feeling criticism vs empathetic feedback about how work was impacting them and also how their decisions were impacting the team. Let’s get into this... UVP 143 There is ALWAYS an Excuse (How to Teach Accountability) Sep 22, 2021
    Show notes

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle another topic from the mailbag. We received an email from a practice owner who is frustrated with a member of their team who always seems to have an excuse for their mistakes or breaking protocols. They asked Andy and Stephanie: “How do I help them self-reflect a little better and to take ownership of things rather than blame it on something or someone else?” Get ready for some serious discussion on how clear is kind. We will also cover the basics of how people are motivated when it comes to accountability. Ultimately, Andy and Stephanie agree that you can’t fix anyone, they have to fix themselves. We talk about the key to understanding what might motivate them to fix themselves and how to leverage that to create an environment that supports accountability. Let’s get into this... UVP 142 Leveraging Relief Vets Sep 15, 2021
    Show notes

This week on the podcast, Dr. Roark and Stephanie tackle another topic from the mailbag. We got an email from a relief vet who was wondering how they can better support the practices they work at. They want to know how to prepare ahead of time and both ask the right questions of the practices they are working with and get the needed information from the practice to make sure that it is a good fit for them/their style! They want “practices to be relieved when I come, not feel relief when I leave”. Having done relief work, Andy has a lot of ideas and opinions to share and Stephanie gives some good ideas for questions the clinic should be asking, questions the relief vet should be asking and ideas for a plan pre/post relief vet experience.
