Episode 648: The Origins of Moral Injury with Timothy Shaw, PhD Aug 25, 2022
    Show notes

Amongst my incredible guests Timothy Shaw, PhD is in a class by himself. Tim studies the impact, origins and implications of moral injury. And in this interview (his second) he shares his inspiring passion not just for the topic of moral injury, but for its origins, meaning and significance for us as human beings.
Timothy has undertaken original research into how laws of war and deeper considerations of ethics and justice can inform our understanding of moral injury, the ‘signature sound’ of contemporary war.
He has taught ethics at university of Sydney and holds a research masters investigating the implications of just war theory - the most uninterrupted, longest-continuing study of moral decision-making known in the Western World - on psychological distress arising from preparative agency.
In addition, Tim received his PhD on the topic of moral injury, and the question of why killing is traumatic using the ethical optics of French philosopher, Emmannuel Levinas.
Tim is also editor of Great Philosophical Problems, a leading philosophical content publisher and leading voice in field of moral injury, Levinas and the just war tradition.

Episode 647: How To Talk To Your Teen with Elliot Kallen Aug 22, 2022
    Show notes

Elliot is the Co-Founder and President of A Brighter Day, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping teens manage depression and stress.
He and his wife started the nonprofit in 2015 in memory of their youngest son, Jake, who committed suicide at 19.
Every year, millions of teenagers struggle with thoughts of depression, deep sadness, isolation, stress, and the feeling of helplessness. Because of their mental health issues, thousands commit suicide, making it one of the leading causes of death among teens in the US.
Sadly, and too often, the parents of these teens are the last to learn about their child's mental problems, and sometimes it's too late to take action.
A Brighter Day aims to stop teen suicide by educating teens and their parents about mental disorders, and providing resources they can use to reach out and communicate when depression and stress are affecting either their own or the lives of those around them.
They have helped thousands of teens deal with mental health issues while still allowing them to retain their privacy and dignity.
Elliot is also actively involved in several other nonprofit organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club of Contra Costa, and Congregation B’nai Shalom, for which he has helped raise millions of dollars.
For nearly 30 years, he has also run a wealth management firm, Prosperity Financial Group, which helps individuals achieve their retirement goals and uniquely invest their assets.

Episode 644: Where is Our Wonder? with Nikki Eisenhauer Aug 11, 2022
    Show notes

Nikki is a Professional Psychotherapist, International Life Coach, Yoga Teacher, and Host of the podcast, Emotional Badass: Where Moxie Meets Mindful. In 2017, she launched the podcast to spread healing, empowerment, and hope to Highly Sensitive People (HSPs), empaths, survivors, and seekers all over theworld. Drawing from her personal experiences as a survivor of childhood abuse and the years she’s spent as a psychotherapist and life coach, she mindfully designed the show to be the emotional education so many of us crave.
I truly believe in the power of healing. When we heal our wounds, let go of what doesn’t serve us, and embrace transformational self care, we are able live a life of purpose, peace, and connection. As we each step up to do this healing work—through the butterfly effect,
    —we change the world.

Episode 643: The Courage to Stand Up with Clara Martin Aug 08, 2022
    Show notes

Clara Martin medically retired from the US Army with PTSD from military sexual trauma, and chronic migraines. She went to work as a peer counselor/victim advocate at a local nonprofit, and decided that she absolutely didn’t need therapy. Nine months later, after suffering a psychotic breakdown and being 5150’d by her concerned mother and brother, Clara realized that was probably not the best decision she’d ever made.
The recovery process was a long and arduous one, aided by an incredibly supportive family and community of friends, a fantastic therapist and psychiatrist, volunteer work in disaster relief with Team Rubicon and on crisis hotlines, and writing - three books are available on Amazon here, and she writes a weekly blog here, and just finished her first graduate course in clinical mental health counseling.
