Episode 799: Mastering Resilience with Lorry Leigh Belhumeur Feb 08, 2024
    Show notes

Lorry is a renowned leader in the field of mental health, with over 30 years of experience serving children and their families.
As a licensed psychologist, Ph. D, and leader in the nonprofit sector addressing mental health and wellness for children, youth and their families Dr. Lorry has been a driving force behind the implementation of various evidence-based practices and strategies for buffering the impact of trauma and the effects of the toxic stress response, as well as building resilience.
Dr. Lorry was an early adopter of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) framework in her local community, which she continues to use as a context for understanding and addressing mental health needs. She has been recognized as a subject matter expert and is frequently sought out for speaking engagements and training on the topics of building resilience, ACEs and trauma-informed care, as well as finding your purpose.
She received her Ph.D. from UCLA and is considered a visionary and trailblazer in the field of children's mental health. Her unique approach reexamines mental health in the context of ACEs and offers solutions that not only treat the predictable negative impacts of ACEs but that also look upstream to prevent them from happening in the first place.
She has dedicated her life and career to helping the world understand and overcome the effects of childhood trauma, which we now understand as the toxic stress response brought on by ACEs.

Episode 797: Hip Hop Therapy with J.C. Hall Feb 01, 2024
    Show notes

J.C. Hall, LCSW, EXAT is a Hip Hop artist and therapist who runs the Hip Hop Therapy Studio program at Mott Haven Community High School, a “second-chance” school in the South Bronx. In 2013, J.C. assembled a professional recording studio in one of the school’s old storage rooms to provide youth the opportunity to engage in the therapeutic process through writing, recording, producing and performing their own music.
The origins of the program are chronicled in the award-winning short documentary Mott Haven, which showcases the efficacy of this approach in addressing trauma and grief in the wake of a school tragedy. After the passing of his friend and mentor Dr. Edgar Tyson, the originator of Hip Hop Therapy, J.C. created hiphoptherapy.com to serve as a centralized resource for those interested in learning about its theory and application. Due to the impact of his work over the years, J.C. won a national Jefferson Award for Outstanding Public Service Benefiting the New York Community in 2020.

Episode 795: The Art And Science of EMDR with Rotem Brayer Jan 25, 2024
    Show notes

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy helped Rotem change so many lives that it ended up changing his own life. By treating his clients with this transformative therapy, he’s realized the limitless power of healing therapists have. When he started providing consultation to newly trained EMDR therapists, he discovered that many therapists needed help and support on their own journey. Many therapists find it hard to navigate the endless flow of information from books, articles, studies, and, of course, the internet.
To help therapists learn and grow, Rotem created the EMDR learning community, where clinicians read and learn together.EMDR is a transformational form of psychotherapy. It has the potential to create long-lasting changes for our clients. Mediocre therapy will lead to mediocre outcomes or worse—make your client worse. Rotem believes that mediocrity is not an option. Sadly, many EMDR-trained therapists are afraid to use this transformative therapy in their practice or are unsure about what to do when things get complicated.

Episode 790: Everyday Trauma: Remapping the Brain's Response to Stress with Dr. Tracey Shors Jan 08, 2024
    Show notes

Dr. Tracey Shors is a Distinguished Professor in Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology and the Center for Collaborative Neuroscience at Rutgers University. She has ~150 scientific publications and has recently written a popular book Everyday Trauma. Her research program studies how our brains ruminate on trauma-related memories and how this process can interfere with our everyday lives, while making still more memories.
Dr. Shors is also focused on identifying effective tools for reducing repetitive thoughts that reinforce our everyday traumas. Her brain fitness program, known as MAP Train My Brain combines “mental and physical” training with silent meditation and aerobic exercise to decrease trauma-related and repetitive thoughts, as well as symptoms of depression and anxiety.
By understanding how and why our brain tends to ruminate, while training them with new mental and physical skills, we are better equipped to leave our pasts behind and live in a brighter future.
