Welcome to 251 of The Today's leader Podcast. Today is a real pleasure and an honor as I introduce you to Ian Clough. Ian is the Chairman of The Brian Bell Group, a major organization in Papua New Guinea. Ian's leadership journey has been an inspiring one to say the least, while Sir Brian Bell, was his grandfather, Ian forged ultimately a national career with some of Australia's leading retailers, and household names, Kmart, Bunnings, Coles Liquor, Coles, and target, forging his own career, before coming back to the family business.
During our conversation, Ian shared his beliefs around leadership and how important, traits like warmth and empathy are, shares an example of why intent in communication is so important, his future seeing with his correct tip on the Melbourne Storm winning the NRL Premiership, with of course Justin Olam, the PNG star in the Melbourne side.
Ian also spoke of the Sir Brian Bell Foundation and the work being done in that space supporting the PNG community. The pride and purpose in his voice are notable as he recites the many great programs, the foundation has brought to life in a very short time frame, and the ultimate good it is doing in PNG.

As Jen says, running a high-performance team always boils down to two things, Adopting a "perfect fit" hiring process and developing each hire. according to his or her own individual and job-specific talent gaps.
She is a bundle of energy and knowledge, forsaking a wonderful international career in people, and forging out on her own path. As she described in the interview, she had an INSTAGRAM perfect career but chose to follow her purpose.
Who gets's really excited about messing up? One of the key aspects of the work Jen does and what she spoke about, was the trading fear for innovation and that is so important for leaders.

I picked up this book in 2011, and the insight was immediate.
The concept that grabbed me was the name of the book itself, have you ever researched, worked to get the car of your dreams, then finally one day you get the car of your dreams. Welcome to Monday Mentoring. As you may know, I have been working with a group of people since the beginning of the year on the Conquer the Year team and as 2020 has been challenging, we have some very focused, some have been waylaid, while others have reset their goals.
I started the year myself with the clear goal of 2 marathons and 2 books. In my group, I had people writing their first books, completing their online course, losing weight and getting fit, starting their own business, and completing studies to further their career.
In every case, we have had to be agile, and be able to shift, adjust to move forward. Many of our coaching sessions revolved around managing our mindset as the complexity of the COVID crisis evolved all around us.
