Tom Fairey | The big Russian guy: Unexpected start of a multimillion dollar business Sep 21, 2021
    Show notes

Thomas is not your regular entrepreneur. In fact, he’s everything but normal.

After he wrestled a huge Russian guy for money (and won), he got an idea that led to an extraordinary journey of starting Stakester – a platform allowing video game players to back themselves. If you’re better than your friend, you win. If not, well…

He traveled to New York to introduce this concept to the Rockstar Games co-founder Gary Foreman. Gary listed 16 reasons why it won’t work. Then he joined Thomas’ team.

Since then, Stakester’s been able to raise millions of dollars, attract thousands of competitive players, and spread the message about fundraising and building & scaling a successful online business.

Tom also runs The Back Yourself Show. A podcast on a mission to empower those thinking about launching their own startup and turning those who have into superstar successes.

Fastest way to stunt growth; keep with the status quo Aug 03, 2021
    Show notes

Status quo sometimes runs rampant in many different industries; Professional sports, sales teams, real estate, the non-profit sector, entrepreneurship, or fortune 500 companies. Just because something has been done one way for a long period of time doesn't necessarily mean that it's the best way to do it.

    What I discuss:

    • Look for data & truth
    • Ask questions
    • Be willing to accept truth over "We've always done it this way"

    Show notes

James Donaldson | Standing above the crowd Jul 13, 2021
    Show notes

The 7-foot-2-inch James Donaldson is best known for his years with the Seattle SuperSonics. He also was a star player in his younger days for Washington State University and played 11 seasons for other National Basketball Association teams.

He started a successful physical therapy business in 1989 but then hit hard times in 2015 after open-heart surgery. His mother died, his wife left him, his business failed, his savings evaporated and he even considered suicide.

But then came the suicide of WSU football star Tyler Hilinski, which shocked him and convinced him to get back on his feet and continue on with his life.

He started a foundation, yourgiftoflife.org to further the conversation about mental health and suicide. And he's written a book "Celebrating Your Gift of Life."

    What we discussed:

    • The business of sports and how not to take things personally (it's a business)

    • Suicide prevention (the stigma of mental health for pro-athletes)
