Beyond the Polls with Henry Olsen: The Trump Tornado and Danger in the Dust Bowl Oct 08, 2026
    Show notes

There's good news and bad news, Toto: We are still in Kansas, but it's not the safe state we'd grown used to. With the midterms less than a month away, and reports confirming the GOP's move to divert funds to tightening races in the agricultural belt, Henry opts to fly solo this week to survey the windswept field ahead of the battle. Considerable movement has occurred in response to the president's bold maneuvering after returning to office, particularly among the Independents and MAGA-lite Republicans who helped elect him. But is a complete leveling inevitable? Not so, says Henry, who offers a lesson from the 2022 midterms that Republicans have curiously left on the table so far.

Plus, Michigan Senate candidate Mike Rogers has a new ad that reveals an important detail about this cycle's swing state playbook.

Can't wait til Thursday for Henry's election insights? Subscribe to his weekly newsletter, "Margin of Victory," for an early look at his latest thoughts on the approaching midterms.

3 Whisky Happy Hour: The Three Whisky Happy Hour: Godwin’s Law Edition Oct 08, 2026
    Show notes

Sitcom viewers will recall the "Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld, but the famous Soup Nazi needs to yield to the latest iteration of this low form of comedy, as this week's episode features the person who has been called "the Shampoo Nazi"—Charles Haywood. We would have thought that people named "EricKKK EricKKKson" (see how easy it is to be stupid?) would know Godwin's Law, whose most important corollary application is that the first person to resort to Reductio ad Hitlerum is immediately deemed the loser of the debate.

Charles Haywood is a person of considerable controversy these days, and to be sure he has some exotic opinions, which listeners should check out for themselves at his capacious website, The Worthy House, in particular his Foundationalist Manifesto.

Harry Jaffa, the person who wrote the infamous phrase "Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice" for Barry Goldwater (and who got called a Nazi for saying this in 1964), also wrote: "'Provocative articles' are worthless unless they can be tested." And thus Lucretia and Steve were delighted that Haywood agreed to come on the 3WHH podcast and submit to a testing of some of his "provocative" thoughts, and a few of his especially spicy social media interventions.

We barely scratched the surface with Charles, as we only got through three of his 12 pillars of how to reconstruct our decayed republic. Much of what he says looks like conventional conservatism, all well-sourced, if perhaps more pungently stated. Other vectors of his thought are novel, likely intentionally so. Listeners should do their own due diligence and make up their own mind, and also land on Charles' preferred moniker, "Shampoo Warlord." There is something comically ironic about the people who want to wash Haywood out of their on-fire hair, but might end up doing it with one of his products. (We delve into the whole shampoo thing in the brief biography segment at the beginning.)

    Show notes

Why are diesel prices soaring, and why doesn’t American energy independence shield consumers from global shocks? He also looks at the limits of energy self-sufficiency, the risks of disrupting global trade, and why expanding supply is essential to easing pressure on farmers, businesses, and households.

Parsing Immigration Policy: 40 Years After IRCA, What Did We Learn? Oct 08, 2026
    Show notes

Forty years ago this month, Congress passed the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), a law intended as a grand bargain: legalizing millions of illegal aliens while establishing workplace enforcement to end the economic magnet that encouraged illegal immigration. Spoiler alert: the amnesty happened, the enforcement did not.

On this 40th anniversary, Parsing Immigration Policy features a discussion with two former INS officials who dealt firsthand with the law and its aftermath. CIS Executive Director Mark Krikorian moderates the discussion with Dan Cadman, a former INS deputy director of investigations and CIS fellow, and Dan Vara, a former INS/ICE attorney and CIS board member.

    Among the lessons discussed:

    • IRCA’s legalization was not matched by the resources needed for workplace enforcement. Cadman notes that INS did not add investigative officers or resources after the law was passed, making widespread employer education, audits, and worksite enforcement unrealistic.
    • The rush to process millions of legalization applications led to changes in adjudication procedures, including eliminating one-on-one interviews and conducting them remotely, which resulted in massive fraud.
    • Vara describes seeing document fraud almost immediately, as applicants focused on how to obtain the documents they needed rather than whether they qualified.
    • Vara emphasizes that “immigration is politics and politics is immigration,” while the speakers argue that those who pushed the amnesty — including Senators Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch, plus the National Council of La Raza (now known as UnidosUS) — ultimately sought to get everyone into the pipeline and then undo the grand bargain.
    • The speakers warn that policymakers should never put benefits first while leaving vague or impossible enforcement goals to be accomplished later.
    • Cadman summarizes the central lesson: “Amnesty is a mistake.”

In his closing comments, Krikorian draws attention to a new DHS watchdog report on visa overstays during the Biden administration. The report demonstrates that the Biden/Mayorkas DHS not only admitted millions of inadmissible aliens at the border, but also effectively ignored this other means of illegal immigration, failing to investigate even those visa overstays deemed a threat to public safety.

    Host

Mark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.

    Guests

Dan Cadman is a Fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies.

Dan Vara is a Board Member of the Center for Immigration Studies.

What the Hell Is Going On: WTH: Will AI End Humanity? Chris Miller Explains. Oct 08, 2026
    Show notes

In this episode, we are joined by Chris Miller for a clear-minded and sobering discussion of the future of AI. The geopolitical competition between the United States and China in the field of artificial intelligence is the arms race of the 21st century, yet in this case, the product is self-improving. Some warn it could end humanity, while others refute these claims as exaggerations. So, what is the answer? Is the opportunity greater than the risk? What are the Chinese up to? Can they beat us? We discuss the risks, opportunities, and implications of proper regulation.

Chris Miller is a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and an associate professor at Tufts University. His latest book Chip War: The Fight for the World’s Most Critical Technology (Scribner, 2022) is a New York Times bestseller. In addition to Chip War, Dr. Miller’s books include We Shall Be Masters: Russian Pivots to Asia from Peter the Great to Putin, Putinomics: Power and Money in Resurgent Russia, and The Struggle to Save the Soviet Economy: Mikhail Gorbachev and the Collapse of the USSR. Dr. Miller’s work has been published in History of Political Economy, the International History Review, and the Soviet and Post-Soviet Review. His commentary has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, the Moscow Times, and South China Morning Post, among others. He has an MA and PhD in history from Yale University and a BA in history from Harvard University and has done research at Hoover Institution, Brookings Institution, Carnegie Moscow Center and the New Economic School in Moscow.
