    The People’s Court Podcast

    The honorable Judge Marilyn Milian presides over the four-time Emmy award winning “The People’s Court.” For more than two decades, Milian has dispensed justice and provided legal insight in the courtroom where justice and reality collide. And now, you can take the show on the go with “The People’s Court Podcast.”

    “The People’s Court Podcast” draws on ordinary people who have filed grievances in civil court and have opted to have their cases heard and mediated by Judge Milian. Running the gamut from disputes between neighbors and family members, to dissatisfied customers suing businesses, Milian’s decisions – based on current law – are final and binding.

    Joining Milian is multiple Emmy Award-winning investigative reporter Harvey Levin, who serves as the series’ host and legal reporter. In the courtroom, Milian is joined by court officer Douglas McIntosh. Doug Llewelyn interviews litigants after a decision has been rendered in their cases.

    Show notes

    The plaintiff hired the defendant as an attorney to defend her son in court. Her son got into a fight and beat someone unconscious, which got him arrested and charged with attempted murder. The plaintiff doesn’t think the defendant was good at his job, so she’s suing for the cost of retainer. The defendant argues he had to dismiss himself from the case because the plaintiff refused to pay him. He’s countersuing for the balance of services.

    Then, the plaintiff rented the top floor of her home to her then-girlfriend’s daughter and son-in-law. After a month, she evicted the defendant. She claims her ex-girlfriend tried to kill herself in the plaintiff’s home and got drunk. The plaintiff claims the defendants left the place in a mess when they left, so she’s suing for rent and damages. The defendants argue the plaintiff tried to run over the ex-girlfriend and denied them access to the home. They say the plaintiff left their items outside in the rain when she kicked them out. They’re countersuing for rent and the cost of items that need replacing.

    A Real Shakedown Jan 25, 2024
    Show notes

    The plaintiff met the defendant when he was interviewing her for a job. He says he took a nap on the defendant’s bed while the defendant ran some errands. The defendant’s phone broke when he was in her room, so he bought her a new one. He argues the defendant won’t pay him back, so he’s suing. The defendant doesn’t think she owes him because she didn’t break her phone.

    Plus, the plaintiff had a service contract for oil with the defendant’s company to clean her heater. She says she stopped using the defendant’s company because she found a less expensive product elsewhere. She says the defendant kept cleaning her heater and she tried to cancel the contract, but he refuses to refund her money. The defendant argues the customer is required to buy oil from his company, but she hadn’t in years, so he canceled her contract.

    Plus, the plaintiff hired the defendant and loaned him money to maintain his credit. He says the defendant never paid him back, so he’s suing. The defendant argues the plaintiff tried to steal his paycheck and he never borrowed money in the first place. He doesn’t think he owes anything.

    Stealing a Noodle Jan 24, 2024

    The plaintiff says her cousin, the defendant, stole her dog, so she’s suing. The defendant claims their aunt originally owned the dog and gave the pup to him when she could no longer care for him. Besides, the defendant argues that the plaintiff doesn’t have the necessary space to take care of a dog.

    Then, the defendant hired the plaintiff to make dresses for her wedding party. Unfortunately, the plaintiff claims she has yet to be paid, so she’s suing. The defendant insists the plaintiff didn’t deliver the dresses in time, so she owes nothing. In fact, the defendant says the dresses were so late that they missed out on using their limo rental, and the photographer couldn’t get photos of the defendant’s bridal party.

    Being Harried Jan 23, 2024
    Show notes

    The plaintiff, a hair salon owner, alleges the defendant bought the building she used and jacked up the rent. The plaintiff refused to sign a new lease and claims the defendant didn’t return the security deposit, so the plaintiff is suing. The defendant argues that the plaintiff left without notice, and he doesn’t owe her a dime.

    The plaintiff claims the defendant got into an accident, and the car he hit careened into the plaintiff’s fence. The plaintiff is suing the defendant for the damages. The defendant says the accident wasn’t his fault, and therefore, he owes nothing.

    The plaintiff used to date the defendant. While they were together, the plaintiff says they once got into a fight, and the defendant stole money from his drawer, so he’s suing. The defendant admits she took the money, but she insists it’s because she felt threatened by the plaintiff and had to change her locks. The defendant is countersuing for lost wages.

    Feline Injury Jan 22, 2024
    Show notes

    The plaintiff and defendant lived together. The plaintiff says the defendant’s cat attacked his feline, and his cat needed surgery. He’s suing for vet bills, Uber trips to and from the vet, and loss of work. The defendant argues the plaintiff has a hairless cat who already had an abscess on his back. No one witnessed the fight, so she doesn’t think she owes.

    The plaintiff bought a car from the defendant. He says they agreed on a monthly payment plan, but then she started demanding accelerated payments. Then, one day, she stole his car, so he’s suing. The defendant argues the plaintiff’s first check bounced, and she had to pay the bounce fee. She says she had a right to take the car back because the title was still in her name.

    The plaintiff says his neighbor’s tree fell on his car, which was a gift from his grandfather. He claims the defendant won’t pay, so he’s suing for the cost of car repairs. The defendant argues the car doesn’t even run and he isn’t sure the tree that fell onto his car was his.

    Shorting Out Jan 19, 2024
    Show notes

    The plaintiff hired the defendant to do electrical work on his house after Hurricane Sandy. He claims the defendant’s worker did a terrible job, and now the lights don’t work. He had to pay another electrician, so he’s suing for damages and the cost of having to pay for another electrician to fix it. The defendant claims he gave the plaintiff a price for the job, but then he tried to get additional work for free.

    Then, the plaintiff used to be in a relationship with the defendant, and they have a child together. She claims the defendant broke her computer and now won’t pay her back, so she’s suing for the cost of the laptop. The defendant argues he broke the computer by accident. He says the plaintiff told him not to worry about it, but then her mom’s boyfriend got in the middle of it all, so now they’re in court.

    Plus, the plaintiff purchased a car from the defendant. He claims the engine was cracked, and now the car overheats. He’s suing for the cost of car repairs. The defendant agues he told the plaintiff to bring the car in, but he waited over a week to do it, so it’s not his responsibility.

    Ruining a Sweet Sixteen Jan 18, 2024

    The plaintiff hired the defendant to put up decorations and props at her daughter’s Hollywood-themed Sweet 16 party. She says the defendant showed up late, so people had to wait in the lobby for the party to start. She’s suing for a partial refund. The defendant argues his workmen got stuck in traffic because of a marathon, but they still got everything done. He claims the party got started only 10 minutes late, and he offered her a credit for her next party, but she refused.

    Then, the plaintiff hired the defendant, a painter, to do work around his house. He paid the defendant most of the money upfront, but he claims the workers did a terrible job and damaged his house. He’s suing for a refund. The defendant argues his workers did a great job and the plaintiff is impossible to please. He doesn’t think he owes the plaintiff a dime.

    Plus, the plaintiff contracted with the defendant to rent space for an event with 250 people. The plaintiff claims the defendant rented the venue to someone else just six days before the scheduled event, so he’s suing for breach of contract. The defendant argues the plaintiff didn’t pay and someone else offered him more money instead. He claims he did not even have a contract with the plaintiff to begin with.

    Rubbing a Relative the Wrong Way Jan 17, 2024

    The plaintiff is suing his aunt and cousin. The plaintiff moved in with the defendants because he got kicked out of his house. He claims his aunt and cousin stole his clothes and won’t pay him back, so he’s suing. The defendants argue the plaintiff stole things from their home when he moved in. They eventually had to evict him and get a restraining order. They’re countersuing for attorney fees, stolen property, and car damages.

    Then, the plaintiff rented an apartment from the defendant. She says her daughter tripped on a pothole on the property and broke her arm. The plaintiff sued the management company, but then they canceled her lease. She’s suing for the balance on a security deposit. The defendant argues the plaintiff caused thousands of dollars in damage in their apartment. She’s countersuing for additional repairs.

    Plus, the plaintiff hired the defendant to install shades in her condo. She says she was watching television with her great-grandson one day and the shades came crashing down. She had to hire someone else to install new shades, so she’s suing for a reimbursement. The defendant thinks the plaintiff should blame the people who installed her window frames, not him.

    Leaky Situation Jan 16, 2024

    The plaintiff hired the defendant to fix his roof and install a new one. He claims the defendant subcontracted out to people who had no idea what they were doing, and it came out terribly. It didn’t even pass a home inspection. He’s suing for the cost to repair the roof. The defendant argues he did a great job and even gave the plaintiff a good deal.

    Then, the plaintiff bought a motorcycle from the defendant. He says there was a broken chain that he thinks the defendant glued back together. The motorcycle started dripping oil and the engine had issues, which he claims the defendant hid from him. He’s suing for the cost of a bike repair estimate. The defendant argues the bike sat around for several years before he sold it. He says he doesn’t know what the plaintiff did with the bike between the time he bought it and sued him.

    Plus, the plaintiff crashed into the defendant after he made a left turn when the plaintiff was going straight and had the right of way. She hit the defendant, who then crashed into another vehicle. The plaintiff says the defendant didn’t have enough on his insurance policy so pay her, so she’s suing for what she’s owed. The defendant argues the plaintiff was speeding when she crashed into him.

    Causing Things to Overheat Jan 15, 2024

    The plaintiff brought his car to the defendant’s shop because it overheated. He says the car overheated minutes after the defendant claimed he fixed it. It overheated a third time, then got it towed to a different mechanic, who said the thermostat was installed backwards. He’s suing for additional car repairs. The defendant argues he never would have installed the device backwards.

    Then, the plaintiff purchased a car from the defendant. He wants his money because he claims the vehicle broke down the day after he bought it. He’s suing for the deposit he put down. The defendant argues the plaintiff can’t just return the car as he pleases. Plus, it’s not his fault the plaintiff’s mom and girlfriend didn’t like the car. He’s countersuing for the balance on the deposit and loss of business.

    Plus, the plaintiff and defendant had been friends for 30 years, but the lawsuit ruined it. He brought his car to the defendant because his friend offered to fix the plaintiff’s truck transmission. The plaintiff says he got his car back five years later, and the car isn’t even in good condition. He’s suing for the cost of repairs. The defendant doesn’t think he owes.
