Scale Up Or Scale Out? | 5-Minute Fridays Apr 08, 2022
    Show notes

As an orthodontist or a dentist, there comes a time when you give serious thought to scaling your practice.

But what nobody really talks about is what scalability actually means. Understanding what we need to do for our practices to get them bigger and more effective is key.

Now, there are two types of scalability:

    • Scaling up
    • Scaling out

In this episode, I take you through the process of scaling and what it entails by using practical examples of what we have done in our practice and when you should consider doing them.

The question for you today is, where are you right now in your practice, in terms of scaling up or scaling out, relative to where you want to be?

To learn more about scalability, join Dr. Ben Fishbien, Amanda Floyd, and Dr. Sarah Howle For the "Orthodontic Practice Management and Marketing for Growth and Scalability" Course in April 2022 at the OrthoPreneur University.

How To Achieve The Ideal Oblique Smile Profile | Five Minute Fridays Mar 25, 2022
    Show notes

In line with this month's theme of esthetic dentistry, today, we talk about the huge importance of the oblique smile.

As orthodontists, we don't pay as much attention to that smile as we should, or at least many of us don't, despite talking a big game to our patients.

Even though the straight-on profile is very helpful and the front face image, the oblique smile is what makes a case stand out.

As orthodontists, we should be thinking beyond moving teeth, we should be thinking full esthetics. And the oblique smile plays a huge role in this.

Luckily, we've got one of the greatest teachers of our generation, Dr. David Sarver, for this month's Course at the OrthoPreneur University.

He loves talking about the oblique smile and will be teaching Interdisciplinary Smile Projection Techniques That Will Change Your Practice Forever!

Tune in 🎧 to learn more!

    Key Takeaways

    - The importance of the oblique smile (00:28)

    - Clinical images vs. real-life smile (02:29)

    - Smile projection (03:44)

    - Think beyond moving teeth, think esthetics (04:43)

Closing Anterior Open Bites Predictably w/ Dr. Nicole Scheffler Mar 22, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Nicole Scheffler. She is one of the amazing speakers lined up for the Orthopreneur Summit in September.

Dr. Nicole Scheffler received her dental and orthodontic training from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. She practices full-time in Boone, North Carolina.

She lectures a lot on closing anterior open bites all over the country and the world.

Back in the year 2000, when nobody was doing TADS in the US, Dr. Nicole went to Belgium to learn how they were placing TADS and how the patient experience was. She came back and approached ORMCO, and that’s how VectorTAS came about.

Nicole recommends closing open bites with TADS in conjunction with an open bite splint to intrude the posterior because it’s just as stable as jaw surgery.

We also talk about creating a vibrant office culture where staff want to come to work. This is important as we all know getting and keeping dental assistants who are the right fit is key to the success of your practice.

    Tune in!

    Key Takeaways

    - Dr. Nicole Scheffler’s background (01:38)

    - The pedo-ortho relationship (06:48)

    - How Dr. Nicole got into open bites (10:30)

    - Orthognathic surgery (14:31)

    - The etiologies for an open anterior bite (16:14)

    - Closing open bites with aligners or TADS? (20:27)

    - How to find good assistants for your practice (22:53)

Aesthetic Finishing In Orthodontics | 5- Minute Fridays Mar 04, 2022
    Show notes

The overwhelming majority of orthodontists hate restorative dentistry. This is odd because, as an orthodontist, you probably have better hand skills and a better understanding of restorative dentistry than many restorative dentists.

As part of our treatment planning, we need to consider restorative dentistry work to finish cases appropriately.

In this and the coming episodes of 5 minute Fridays, we'll talk about restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, and the macro and micro aesthetics of what we do. This is the stuff that will truly set your practice apart.

Listen in to learn more on macro and micro aesthetics as we gear towards Dr. David Sarver’s course at the Orthoprenuer University.

    Key Takeaways

How restorative dentistry will set you apart as an orthodontist (00:32)
