    Show notes

Building strong connections with patients is crucial for providing quality care and fostering trust.
However, there is a common misconception among many younger orthodontists that spending more time with patients equates to creating a stronger bond and gaining their trust.
As we all know, spending excessive time in the consultation room does not necessarily lead to increased case acceptance rates or patient satisfaction.
The key to successful patient interactions lies in finding the right balance between personal connection and efficient communication.
And you can achieve this in 30 seconds.
    How?
Tune in to this 5-Minute Friday to learn the valuable technique I use to connect with my patients in 30 seconds.

The Key to a Balanced Life Aug 04, 2023
    Show notes

Today, I want to shift our focus from work, patients, and systems to a topic that is often neglected but crucial for our well-being – YOU.
Life can get overwhelming, and it's easy to lose balance in our pursuits.
I often talk about the "Cross of Life," a metaphorical representation of the various aspects of our lives: mental, physical, spiritual, and social.
Achieving balance across these domains is essential for overall happiness and fulfillment.
However, there are times when life throws us into situations that demand temporary imbalances, such as starting a new practice, having a new baby, or taking on a new hobby.
While these periods are normal and may be necessary, we must be cautious of "mission creep," where imbalances become long-term and detrimental.
In this episode, I talk about the significance of maintaining balance in life and the importance of carving out time for yourself amidst the daily chaos.
    Key Takeaways
    - The Cross of Life (00:41)
    - Are you out of balance (01:28)
    - How to +1 on different areas of your life (02:30)
    - You need to make more time for yourself (04:15)
    - How to get out of your own way (5:55)
    - Find something to do for hobbies (6:08)

Conflict Resolution 101: Essential Skills for Orthodontists and Their Teams Aug 01, 2023
    Show notes

As orthodontists running an orthodontic practice, we understand that dealing with upset parents/patients and conflicts within our team can be stressful and challenging.
Our ability to handle conflicts constructively plays a significant role in the success and reputation of our practice.
However, it's crucial to recognize that the true impact of these difficult situations lies not in the conflicts themselves but in how we respond to them.
By adopting a systematic and empathetic approach, we can transform anger and conflict into opportunities for growth and positive change.
When faced with an upset parent or team member, the first step is to actively listen and restate their concerns. Restating what they are experiencing demonstrates that you genuinely care and are invested in understanding their perspective. This simple act of active listening can immediately diffuse heightened emotions and create an atmosphere of being heard and valued.
In this episode, I am joined by Dr. John Pobanz, who will be speaking at the Orthopreneurs Summit to explore practical strategies to handle conflicts constructively and create a harmonious and thriving orthodontic practice.
Conflicts are not insurmountable obstacles but opportunities for growth and improvement. The lessons learned from resolving conflicts with care and understanding can enhance our leadership skills and strengthen the bonds within our orthodontic team.
    Key Takeaways
    - Meet Dr. John Pobanz (00:34)
    - How to respond to difficult situations (04:24)
    - Assessing the cost-benefit of a reaction (08:58)
    - Systematizing how to react to situations (09:22)
    - Transforming angry patients into raving fans (14:53)
    - How to solve conflicts in a constructive way (19:17)
    - Restate and validate (23:19)
    - Probe for acknowledgment of the situation (31:27)
    - Let it go (35:58)

The True Meaning of Work: A Reflection on Money and Purpose Jul 28, 2023
    Show notes

I strive to make a difference in the world, to help my patients, and to be a source of positivity for my team.
These aspects are incredibly important to me, and I couldn't imagine pursuing a career devoid of such elements.
But let's be honest with ourselves, that’s not why we leave our families to go to work.
We go to work to support our families, to provide them with a roof over their heads and food on the table.
Now our purpose in life can be different from the reason we wake up every day and go to work rather than spend time with family doing things we like.
If the reason we go to work is to make money, then we need to figure out how to make more money in the least amount of time with good policies, good systems, good leadership, and good management.
How can you leverage your life so that you can make more money in less time so you can enjoy other things?
    Tune in to find out!
    Key Takeaways
    - The primary reason we go to work (00:35)
    - Freedom from finance (04:04)
    - Separate money from greed (05:13)
    - Make more money in lesser time (06:06)

My Case Against 'Airway-Friendly' Orthodontics Jul 21, 2023
    Show notes

While I may have used the term Airway-Friendly Orthodontics years ago, looking back I think it was a mistake to use that term and it’s OK to grow and change.
Airway-friendly orthodontics is arguably one of the worst terms that you can use and some have seized on it to make a dangerous point. In this episode, I want to lay out the case of why this is a terrible term but an important issue.
I am not an airway-friendly orthodontist; I am an orthodontist. And that means that I look at far more than just the bite.
As orthodontists, our expertise lies in altering skeletal patterns and altering tooth position. If I can expand a child who's six years old, whose pediatrician has given up on them, whose family is going through immense distress, I will. Especially if I'm part of an interdisciplinary team.
It deeply troubles me when individuals propagate rhetoric that dissuades orthodontists from shouldering the responsibility to help patients in need.
Such misleading narratives hinder progress in our field and harm those who could greatly benefit from appropriate orthodontic interventions.
And they prey on the term “airway-friendly orthodontics” as if that’s the problem.
As with any field, there may be instances of over-treatment by some practitioners, but these should not overshadow the importance of addressing legitimate airway concerns in children and adults.
Tune in to this episode to hear me argue against the term' Airway-Friendly Orthodontics and for the need for all of us to help the kids and adults who are falling through the cracks in the medical system.'
    Key Takeaways
    - My case against airway-friendly orthodontics (00:35)
    - Why are people expanding four-year-olds? (01:04)
    - Are people expanding way too much? (02:10)
    - The loudest voices often are the least educated on the literature (03:01)
    - The role of the AAO (06:42)
    - I am not an airway-friendly orthodontist (11:10)

What it Takes to Build $27 Million-a-Year Practice w/ Amanda Floyd Jul 18, 2023
    Show notes

Fishbein Orthodontics is regarded as one of the fastest-growing orthodontic practices in the country. They made $27 million in the biggest year and have more than 100 employees.
    Those are quite remarkable numbers.
One of the driving forces behind this immense success is Amanda Floyd. She serves as the Chief Operating Officer with extensive knowledge of managing, scaling a business, and employee development.
She will be speaking at the Orthopreneurs Summit in September on Creating Systems for Success.
In this episode, she shares her insights and experiences on the key factors that contributed to the remarkable growth and success of the Fishbein organization.
The key takeaway from her is that it all starts with the culture. Without a strong positive team culture in your practice, it doesn’t matter what else you do. Culture is the foundation upon which to build everything else.
The Fishbein organization attributes a significant portion of its success to its strong team culture. Amanda emphasizes that treating the team right is the first step towards delivering exceptional patient care. This approach ultimately translates into better patient experiences, as a happy and engaged team naturally provides better care and service.
Amanda also shares some secrets to hiring and reveals the reason why they have not been impacted by the staff shortages that have hit our industry.

Strategies to Align Your Expectations with Achievable Outcomes in Your Practice Jul 14, 2023
    Show notes

Today, I want to dive into a topic that affects us all—the gap between our expectations and the actual outcomes we experience.
We all have expectations, whether it's in our personal lives or professional endeavors. We set goals, make plans, and hope for certain outcomes. But sometimes, things don't go as expected.
Let's imagine expectation as a big circle. Everything within that circle represents our hopes and aspirations.
Now, imagine that the outcome falls short and becomes a smaller circle inside the big one. This smaller circle symbolizes the capacity—the mental and physical ability—to achieve the desired result.
When there's a difference between the size of the outer circle (expectation) and the inner circle (capacity), tension, pain, and conflict arise. We encounter problems and feel frustrated.
So, how can we bridge this gap and find solutions?
    Tune in to learn more!
    Key Takeaways

    Expectation and capacity (00:29)

    Lowering expectations (01:52)

    Increasing capacity (02:09)

    Making conscious choices (02:53)
