Harry Freedman - Leonard Cohen: The Mystical Roots of Genius
Ed is joined by Harry Freedman, who has spent the last few years looking at the work of legendary singer/song writer and poet Leonard Cohen.
Mr Freedman tells Ed how he uncovered the spiritual traditions that lie behind Leonard Cohen's profound and unmistakable lyrics. Cohen himself was deeply learned in Judaism and Christianity, the spiritual traditions that underpinned his self-identity and the way he made sense of the world.
It is a voyage into the allusions, allegorical structures and theosophical imagery Cohen put together so well in his work which is both profound and eternal.

Dead Man Talking
Dawn and Dave Cook
Douglas Clark – Dead Man Talking Podcast
While there are serial killers who are well known and infamous, somewhat down the food chain although no less horrifying is Douglas Clark. Or is he? Dawn and Dave Cook have researched the case after deciding to make a documentary about serial killers, spoke to Clark – known as The Sunset Strip Killer. It is alleged Clark and a misfit called Carol Bundy went on a spree of gruesome murders between June and August 1980.
What started as a curiosity as to the common determining factor or experience which creates a serial killer turned into an investigation into the Clark/Bundy murders and the holes in the prosecution which cast doubt on the sentencing that ultimately placed Douglas Clark on death row.

Jonathan M. Katz - Smedley Butler
Smedley Butler was a decorated and notable soldier, rising to the rank of Major General thanks to his fighting in battles in the Philippines, The Mexican Revolution and World War 1.
In 1933 he appeared in front of a congressional committee to inform them of a planned coup, organised by some of the wealthiest industrialists in America, to overthrow the administration of Theodore Roosevelt. He was appearing after being asked to lead a demonstration of veterans in Washington who would then launch an attack on the civil structures of State. This was similar to events and schemes happening or being planned throughout Europe at the time, though bore few connections apart from the Fascist influences.
Jonathan M. Katz talks about his book – Gangsters of Capitalism, detailing how America went from where it was at the turn of the 20thCentury, to where it is over a hundred years later, from the foundations built by people like Smedley Butler – called The Maverick Marine - in the first half of the century.
His book has been referenced as essential for anyone who wants to know how the modern world came to be.

Park Police discovered Foster dead from an apparently self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head in Fort Marcy Park off the George Washington Parkway in Virginia on July 20, 1993. Foster was holding a gun in his hand. An autopsy and subsequent investigation later confirmed that Foster had died by shooting himself once in the mouth with the .38 calibre Colt revolver found at the scene.Or did he? Foster had been known to be unhappy with his job at the White House. Exactly why remains a subject of controversy. Accusations and criticisms were rife in his work. But the case didn't sit right. Foster wasn't logged out of the Whitehouse. The gun was found some distance from the body - a rare occurrence in gun shot suicides. And Forster's injuries were indicative of the pistol being held in the right hand, but Foster was left handed.Despite the reluctance of authorities to reopen the case, many researchers have postulated a number of different scenarios which ended in Foster's demise.Hugh Turley is one of those who has looked into the case. he shares his knowledge of the case with Ed Opperman.

Derf BackDerf - The Kent State Killings
The Anti-war movement in the 1970s was one of the biggest or perceived as the biggest threat to the American society in generations.
Derf talks to Ed about his work and his current project, which is the killings of students during a anti-war protest in 1970, known as The Kent State Shootings.
The event and the cover up was one of the most obvious and blatant in your face operations, even for the US Government under Nixon.
The Kent State shootings (also known as the May 4 massacre and the Kent State massacre) resulted in the killing of four and wounding of nine unarmed college students by the Ohio National Guard, on the Kent State University campus. The shootings took place on May 4, 1970, during a peace rally opposing the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War into Cambodia by United States military forces as well as protesting the National Guard presence on campus. This incident marked the first time a student was killed in an anti-war gathering in United States history.
Derf Backderf, is an American cartoonist. He is most famous for his graphic novels, especially My Friend Dahmer, the international bestseller which won an Angoulême Prize, and earlier for his comic strip The City, which appeared in a number of alternative newspapers from 1990 to 2014. In 2006 Derf won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for cartooning. Backderf has been based in Cleveland, Ohio, for much of his career.
His award winning book, Kent State is out now.
