    GRAND Magazine's Christine Crosby

The Not Old Better Show Author Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #438.

As part of our Art of Living, entrepreneur interview series, today's show is a special one. We'll have a special announcement, so please stick around to the end of the show, but that won't be a problem because our guest today, Christine Crosby is one of those special people you'll just want to listen to. Not only is Christine Crosby a lifelong entrepreneur (she likes to say she is a 'born entrepreneur'), with business and office equipment companies, publishing, and book author, Christine Crosby is a grandmother.

That last bullet point, about Christine Crosby being a grandmother is probably the most important to Christine Crosby and will be to our Not Old Better Show audience. Being a grandmother opened Christine Crosby's eyes to yet another business idea, born out of need: Christine Crosby's success as an entrepreneur didn't give her immediate insight into the world of 'grand-parenting." So, Christine Crosby launched a national magazine, GRAND Magazine to help her, help us all, actually, learn and thrive with our grandchildren.

Christine Crosby's insight and gift for recognizing trends were on point. GRAND Magazine has been a HUGE success! Our Not Old Better Show audience, the 50-plus consumer has indeed adapted to digital media—think Facebook, Twitter and Instagram—and advertisers are recognizing it, particularly in the case of GRAND Magazine. In fact, the Internet is brimming with articles on how to market to an older demographic. "Who wants to reach this market?" "Everybody."

We'll talk to Christine Crosby about all that, plus about her early years as an entrepreneur as well as trends she's spotted about the 50+ community and OH YEAH, there's a big announcement coming, too!

Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, via internet phone, editor, founder and publisher of GRAND Magazine, Christine Crosby.

My thanks to Christine Crosby, from GRAND Magazine, my new partner, and check out our site for links to more information and FREE digital subscriptions to GRAND Magazine. My thanks to you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show audience for your generous time. I know you have a lot to do and I appreciate you spending time with me today. Remember to look after yourself during this health crisis because looking out for yourself means looking out for all of us, to flatten the disease transmission curve. Please get the facts on COVID 19, protect each other, be kind, be well, stay safe and practice smart social distancing, and

Preview of Imagined Life - The Advocate

The Not Old Better Show Wondery

Welcome to a mini-episode of The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #437.

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to walk in the shoes of a legend and not even realize it?

The Wondery podcast, IMAGINED LIFE takes you there.

Imagined Life from Wondery is just so unique because of the way the stories are each told. The way they lead a listener through is amazing, and I am just mesmerized by these episodes.

Dear listeners, we are living in some challenging times. But, all of us have faced challenges, and throughout the time we've had challenges. It's during these challenging periods when we face pivotal moments that lead us to great growth and insight.

One of the many reasons I love the podcast, Imagined Life is because on each episode you step into the shoes of someone who has faced tough moments, real challenges, adversity…only to overcome the odds against them and ultimately create a positive impact on the world. Doing something great after facing long odds against you is what we're all about and I love these Imagined Life podcasts from Wondery.

I mentioned that I enjoy the way the stories are told, and you will, too. The stories are totally immersive. You will get clues along the way from each host about who's life this is, but only at the last minute will you find out who YOU are. That's right, Imagined Life is the inspiration for how to weather life's unexpected trials, Imagined Life shows just how connected we all are, and how you might face similar trials and adversity.

In a moment you'll hear a clip from the newest episode, titled The Advocate. In The Advocate, you'll face judgment and prejudice, but you'll transcend into someone who fights for the rights of others. You'll be regarded as one of the most likable people on the planet and to top it off you win the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

If you're wondering what it would be like to be a legendary musician, a successful entrepreneur or a stunning movie star, listen to the full episodes at Wondery.FM/NotOld_IL But, check out Imagined Life, and right now, sit back…. relax... and imagine… Your Life. http://wondery.fm/NotOld_IL

Senior Fitness During COVID-19: Sabrena Jo

Fitness Friday Series with Sabrena Jo

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show Fitness Friday edition, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #436.

Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo.

On the Fitness Friday program, we talk with Sabrena Jo about excise and fitness. But, with all of us facing the 'new normal,' of COVID - 19, we are more aware than ever that the COVID - 19 pandemics has rapidly changed how we live, work and learn. First and foremost, I want to assure everyone that the safety of older adults, a population is known to be at high risk, is paramount to us here at The Not Old Better Show. As a matter of fact, today we'll be talking to Sabrena Jo about adjusting to the 'new normal,' exercising in light of social distancing, and staying fit during the pandemic.

That, of course, is our guest today, Sabrena Jo talking about how fulfilling teleconferencing with your fitness professional. I love speaking with Sabrena Jo, American Council on Exercise (ACE) Fitness Director of Science and Research Content, because of her range and depth of ideas, and her research orientation. Research, fact-based analysis, and outcomes orientation is critical to our Not Old Better Show audience.

Sabrena Jo and I spend considerable time researching our topics to share with you, and today's show required extra time to give you the most up to the minute advice and counsel. According to the CDC and National Institutes of Health, where Dr. Anthony Fauci works, "Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs."

All of us in The Not Old Better Show audience are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 which may result in increased stress during a crisis. Fear and anxiety about the COVID-19 pandemic can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions, which exercise can lessen. Please be safe and join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, Sabrena Jo.

My thanks always to Sabrena Jo, ACE Director of Science and Research Content for joining us today. And to you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show audience, look after yourself during this health crisis because looking out for yourself means looking out for all of us, to flatten the disease transmission curve. Please get the facts on COVID 19, protect each other, be kind, be well, stay safe and practice smart social distancing, and remember to Talk About Better. The Not Old Better Show. Thanks, everybody.

Dr. Bart Ehrman - Heaven & Hell: Perspectives on the After Life

Smithsonian Associates, The Not Old Better Show

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #435. It's great to be back with you all, and thanks for all the warm wishes of health and advice about social distancing. We are in a new world, paradigm and set of circumstances, and everyone listening is aware of the current health emergency gripping our country and our world.

We're back with another great segment today, and as part of our Smithsonian Associates author interview series, we are joined today by author, historian, Christianity scholar, and expert on Jesus Christ and the New Testament, Dr. Bart Ehrman. Dr. Bart Ehrman will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates program, September 12, 2020, and the title of his presentation is Heaven and Hell: Perspectives on the Afterlife

Please know that Smithsonian Associates programs scheduled through May 3 are on hold. Smithsonian Associates patrons will be notified of any status changes, location changes, credits, or refund opportunities. Please check out the Smithsonian Associates pages, and our web site for links with more information about this very much in flux program.

According to the most recent Pew Research Center poll, 72% of all Americans believe in literal heaven as a place of eternal blessing for departed souls, and 58% believe in a literal hell and its eternal torments. But even though Christians have held these ideas for centuries, they are not found anywhere in the Old Testament or even in the teachings of the historical Jesus. So where did they come from? Were they simply invented? And, what about Eleanor Shellstrop, the wonderful character from the hit TV show, The Good Place, who desperately works to avoid the afterlife she deserves, and its eternal torments. Let's listen as Dr. Bart Ehrman reads from his new book, Heaven And Hell, A History of the Afterlife about the afterlife and more.

War Of The Roses - Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger

    Smithsonian Associates - Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm your host Paul Vogelzang, and this is show number 433.

As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living series, we're speaking today to Carol Ann Lloyd Stanger. Carol Ann Lloyd Stanger is a returning guest, a Not Old Better Show audience favorite, and today's show is going to be all about royal family drama.

Carol Ann Lloyd Stanger will answer the question: Can a family conflict change the history of England and Europe? When it's the Plantagenet family, the answer is yes. Henry VI's weakness as a medieval king led to a challenge for power, resulting in a series of battles and power grabs known as the Wars of the Roses. Tudor scholar Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger traces this tumultuous history from its earliest origins through its years of conflicts to its final result: the establishment of the most powerful family of the 16th century, the Tudors.

Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger. My thanks to Carol Ann Lloyd Stanger for joining me today, and my thanks, as always to the Smithsonian team for all they do to support the show. My thanks to you, my dear Not Old Better Show audience, and remember, let's talk about better. Thanks, everybody.

Mark Greaney - One Minute Out- Author Interview

The Not Old Better Show, Artist Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #432.

As part of our Art Of Living, Author Interview Series, our guest today is Mark Greaney. The Not Old Better Show audience will know Mark Greaney from his work in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan universe or his bestselling Gray Man series, and next week, February 18, 2020, a brand new Gray Man book, titled One Minute Out will be on sale and hit bookstores everywhere.

Our guest today is Mark Greaney, New York Times bestselling author, first published THE GRAY MAN, in 2009 and it became a national bestseller and a highly sought-after Hollywood property.

Now there are nine novels in the NYT Bestselling Gray Man series, including One Minute Out. Sony is developing the film adaptation for the series debut, The Gray Man. In research for his novels, Mark Greaney travels to dozens of countries, visited the Pentagon, military bases and embassies, and trained alongside military and law enforcement.

In bestseller Greaney's remarkable ninth Gray Man novel, our hero, Courtland Gentry (aka The Gray Man) takes on the Consortium, an international sex slave cartel, the existence of which Gentry stumbles on while committing a hit on a Serbian strongman. A former CIA employee, Gentry fell out of favor to the point that the agency was trying to kill him, and after getting that misunderstanding straightened out, the agency is still kind of trying to kill him, though he works as an off-the-books assassin in a secret CIA program called Poison Apple.

Never mind his official status. What's important is that he's probably the greatest assassin in the world, and those who oppose him usually end up dead. In "One Minute Out," he decides to defy his bosses and hunt down the men who are part of the Consortium, running his own op with no help from the CIA. It's a great story, and Mark Greaney gets high praise for his work…among his many compliments, comes from another of my favorite authors, Lee Child, who says: "I love the Gray Man."

Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, author interview series, NYT Best Selling author of The Gray Man, and his latest in the Gray Man series, 'One Minute Out,' author Mark Greaney.

My thanks to NYT Best Selling author, Mark Greaney. Mark Greaney's new book, 'One Minute Out' will be on sale wherever you find your books, February 18. My thanks to you my dear

Why We Love Crosswords: It's a Puzzle - Deb Amlen

Smithsonian Associates, The Not Old Better Show

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #431.

As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living Interview Series, we have a very fun show, and Deb Amlen is the head writer and senior editor of the New York Times Wordplay column. Deb Amlen will speak at a Smithsonian Associates event on March 5, 2020. For ticket details and more information, please check out today's show notes on our web site, and HERE> at the Smithsonian Associates web site.

Solving a challenging puzzle-like the New York Times Crossword is less about what you know and more about understanding how to penetrate those tricky clues.

The New York Times Crossword, which started as a way to give newspaper readers a diversion from the woes of World War II, has become the gold standard in the puzzle industry. Hundreds of thousands of people count themselves as Times Crossword solvers—and many turn to the paper's crossword puzzle column "Wordplay" to get daily tips for navigating the word grid.

Deb Amlen, the Times' crossword columnist and senior editor of "Wordplay," likes to say, what kept people solving after they had their first taste of "cruciverbalism"? (Look it up!) Deb Amlen likes to think it's the the humor and wordplay in crossword clues. Deb Amlen's favorite clue? "It brings out the child in you." Think about it…Answer: "Labor." Hilarious. Deb Amlen has a great sense of humor, and she'll offer an insider's look at how the crossword puzzle evolved through history, how you can get started as a puzzle solver or improve your skills, and ways to eventually crack the code behind even the trickiest of clues. And getting better at solving one kind of puzzle might just make you a little better prepared to deal with others you encounter along the way.

Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, Deb Amlen.

My thanks to Deb Amlen, head writer and senior editor of the New York Times Wordplay column. Deb Amlen will speak at a Smithsonian Associates event on March 5, 2020. 2020 Fitness Trends for Older Adults - Sabrena Jo

Fitness Friday Series with Sabrena Jo

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show Fitness Friday edition, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #430. Today's show is brought to you by Bombas socks!

Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo.

On the Fitness Friday program, we talk with Sabrena Jo about excise and fitness. But, with the new year, our new year's resolutions, there are many new trends to help keep us on track with those worthy resolutions. We'll be talking to Sabrena Jo about these trends, which are distinct from fads. A trend defined as "a general development or change in a situation," and a fad defined as "a fashion that is taken up with great enthusiasm for a brief period."

I love speaking with Sabrena Jo, American Council on Exercise (ACE) Fitness Director of Science and Research Content, because of her research orientation. Research, fact-based analysis, and outcomes orientation is critical to our Not Old Better Show audience.

I spent considerable time researching 2020 fitness trends for older adults and today on the Fitness Friday show, we'll hear from Sabrena Jo about wearable technology, HIIT (that's H I I T, for High-Intensity Interval Training), health and wellness coaching, exercise as medicine, and much more.

Fads, no, and trends yes, and the trends identified could predictably appear for several years as all of us in the Not Old Better Show audience age better, and when the industry compares the historical results. Likewise, fads may appear but they may drop off the list in subsequent years because they're fashionable, but don't have that 'staying power' we in the Not Old Better Show audience embrace.

Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via interview phone, ACE Fitness' Sabrena Jo.

Dance and Music for Parkinson's Disease and other Movement Challenges

The Not Old Better Show, Artist Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode # 429.

As part of our Art of Living Interview series, we have a wonderful show today. I say, 'we,' because my wife, Gretchen Vogelzang, who you all know, and from your emails, all seem to love, just like me, will join me with today's guests. Gretchen is wearing her "dance professional" hat because our two guests have dance professional hats, among others, that they wear, too.

As I say, today's show is a great one, and an important one and our guests reflect that importance. We are speaking with Robert Sacheli and Roy Barber. More about Robert Sacheli and Roy Barber in a moment, but our equally important subject is the delightful combination of music and dancing to aide in therapy for the aged, including therapy for those suffering from Parkinson's Disease.

Music makes you feel happy, mournful, engaged, soothed, or uplifted. People with Parkinson's disease (PD) benefit from participating in musical programs including dancing. If you have a movement disorder you may think you'll no longer be able to participate in many physical activities including dancing. That is not necessarily so. Dancing is good exercise, it encourages mental stimulation and social interaction, can reduce depression, and generally make you feel better.

That's our subject today and Gretchen and I will be speaking with two experts about this. Robert Sacheli and Roy Barber are dance and music experts, respectively, and both know from experience that music therapy has been demonstrated to be effective for people with PD and other movement restrictions. Both Robert Sacheli and Roy Barber will discuss their use of dance and music therapy programs that show that playing and/or singing, dancing and listening to music may have an effect on emotions, behaviors, movement, communication, and cognitive factors.

Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, Robert Sacheli, and Roy Barber.

My thanks to Robert Sacheli and Roy Barber and for their generous time about an important topic. My thanks to my wonderful bride and co-host today, Gretchen, and my thanks to you, our wonderful Not Old Better Show audience. Remember, let's talk about better…The Not Old Better Show.
