Mary Linn - Vital Voices: Endangered Languages in a Changing World

The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Art Of Living Series

Happy Holidays everyone. Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #418. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Art of Living Interview Series, our guest today is Mary Linn, Curator of Cultural and Linguistic Revitalization for the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage (CFCH). As a matter of fact, we're listening to some Smithsonian Folkways Recordings of a Harvest Song, and the CFCH Music from South New Guinea series. Mary Linn discusses with us how indigenous languages are linked to health, education, and employment, as well as the vital connection they provide to the continuity of knowledge and cultural practices. Mary Linn also tells us how speakers of endangered and minoritized languages are engaged in innovative efforts to reclaim them, thus revitalizing, and drawing on examples from several resilient communities, including unwritten languages.

One of the examples of an unwritten language that we'll discuss is the language of Chuukese. Mary Linn will hear some Chuukese spoken to her by my son, Avery Vogelzang, which we'll also do during our interview, and now, just to give you a sense of this language. I will tell you, too, that Chuukese isn't a language that Mary Linn is focused on, however, it is one of the languages that could easily be in need of linguistic revitalization, as it is spoken by a very small population in the Federated State of Micronesia. That, of course, is my son, Avery Vogelzang, speaking a brief bit of Chuukese, but we'll now be joined by Mary Linn, Curator of Cultural and Linguistic Revitalization for the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles: Surviving Holiday Travel

The Not Old Better Show, Healthy Travel Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #416.

I love the holidays. I enjoy this time of year because of family, faith, giving, receiving and holiday travel. Yes, I'll say it again…I do enjoy holiday travel, but not everybody does.

Some don't enjoy the chaos of the mass transit systems, the bedlam at the airports and the sheer number of us out and about. But I love it. Some just plain don't like holiday travel because of the upheaval to our lives, our body clocks, and what being in new places means to our digestion and health.

It is really easy to overlook good health when we travel.

Today's show is another great one in our Travelan Food & Travel Interview series, and we're speaking with travel health expert on nutrition, diet, lifestyle, balance and a registered nurse, Stacy Koski.

Stacy Koski is a Travel Health Nurse consultant at Passport Health and works with Passport Health customers all over the world to educate and advise on vaccinations, immigration health, and advanced medical travel-related education.

Stacy Koski is the founder of Balance Nutrition and Bliss Entourage and works to implement tools into your life that guide us to better travel health.

That, of course, is our guest today, travel health expert and registered nurse, Stacy Koski.

Today's show focuses on the splendid idea of sandy beaches, majestic mountains and exciting adventures that await us, all of which follow the often cramped road trip, delayed airplane flight or choppy cruise.

But health is one thing that shouldn't be set aside when you're trying to sidetrack your daily responsibilities for a little rest and relaxation. So, Stacy Koski will share some tips and tricks that health professionals have for three popular vacation travel options — cars, planes, and cruises.

Please join me in welcoming back to The Not Old Better Show, health travel expert, Stacy Koski.

My thanks to Travelan for their help in arranging today's show, and my special thanks to Stacy Koski, RN, and travel health expert from Passport Health, Balance Nutrition, Bliss Entourage for her excellent tips and guidance about holiday travel. My thanks to you, our special Not Old Better Show audience. Remember, let's talk about better. The Not Old Better Show. Happy Holidays everybody. Exercise Helps Anxiety and Depression - John Ratey, MD

    Fitness Friday Interview Series

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #413. Today's show is brought to you by AirMedCare Network.

As part of our Fitness Friday expert interview series, today's guest is best selling author, neuropsychiatrist, Dr. John Ratey.

Associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard University, John J. Ratey MD, is an internationally recognized expert in Neuropsychiatry, and has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and 11 books, including the groundbreaking ADHD "Driven to Distraction" series, and "Spark, The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain."

Chances are good that you, or someone you know, is dealing with anxiety. One in five Americans over 18 reported having a chronic anxiety disorder during the past year. Anxiety can increase a person's risk for other psychiatric disorders like depression and can contribute to diabetes and cardiovascular problems. One sobering study shows that people with anxiety tend to be more sedentary and do less intense forms of physical activity if any. That's ironic, because physical activity, and moving our muscles may be the single best non-medical solution we have for preventing and treating anxiety.

That, of course, is our guest today, Dr. John Ratey.

Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, Dr. John Ratey.

My thanks to AirMedCare Network for sponsoring the show today, and my thanks to Dr. John Ratey for joining me. As always, my thanks to you, our wonderful Not Old Better Show audience. Talk About Better. The Not Old Better Show. Happy Holidays, everybody.

Lindsay Graham - American Elections: Wicked Game

The Not Old Better Show, Artist Interview Series

Welcome to a special segment of The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #410.

The US election season is underway, and our country's political heavyweights will make the big 'final push' in important campaigns across the United States.

You know this, but today US voters face a choice that could shape the nation for years, and is so important to all of us, not just members of The Not Old Better Show audience.

The November of 2020 elections are approximately 1 year away, and citizens of the United States will cast ballots to elect their president. With feelings of political polarization at an all-time high, though, many are dreading another year of outrage, mourning, and animosity.

I hear the following refrain wherever I go, and as Not Old Better Show audience, we ask frequently, "Can't we just go back to the "good ol' days" when political parties worked together, and politicians put country over party?

Well, it turns out, those days never existed. It's time to rethink what you thought you knew about presidential politics with the new Wondery podcast: American Elections: Wicked Game.

The new show from Wondery, American Elections: Wicked Game looks back some, from the unanimous election of George Washington in 1789 to Donald Trump's surprise victory in 2016, and each episode will explore the truth behind all 58 of America's elections - all the way through the 2020 election. American Elections: Wicked Game host, Lindsay Graham, the host of American History Tellers and American Scandal, and offers answers to the questions: was there ever a "good ol' days" or was presidential politics always played dirty?

Americans have this very real animosity.

Many of us wonder why we can't just go back to those days where the political climate was far more temperate, and to a renewed spirit of political bipartisanship.

And that agreeable past we all remember, a mirage…it was never really there.

What is likely to happen? Final outcomes are difficult to predict, especially as media suggest turnout could be the highest it's been in decades, and many prognosticators believe the races remain on a knife-edge of victory or defeat. It won't take much of a nudge in either direction to topple a lot of races!

With all that in mind, we'll be speaking with the host of American Elections: Wicked Gam, Lindsay Graham. And, while you're listening, make sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you're listening right now. Just open your podcast app and search for "American Elections: Wicked Game." You can also find the link in the episode notes, so check it out… Listen now at: http://wondery.fm/AENotOld

BEN FOLDS - A Dream About Lightning Bugs

Smithsonian Associates, The Not Old Better Show

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #409.

As part of our Smithsonian Associates Year of Music series, this will be a very special show. In a minute or two, I'll be speaking with Ben Folds. And I'll tell you right out of the gate, I'm a huge fan. My exercise playlist repeats Zak and Sara, and that opening piano in Zak and Sara is just Ben Folds at his best! As a matter of fact, it's hard to think about Ben Folds without the characters in his songs.

And now, Ben Folds, in his first book, a memoir titled A Dream About Lightning Bugs: A Life of Music and Cheap Lessons, Ben Folds opens up about those characters, what he knows, what he thinks he knows, and what it took to move from a working-class childhood in North Carolina to stardom.

Join me and Ben Folds for a conversation during which Ben Folds talks about his creative process; how his personal life intersects with his songwriting; why he insists that the ups and downs are essential for any artist; and how paying his dues (his polka career never quite took off) and never losing sight of his dream of a creative life helped shape him into the musician he wanted to be.

Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Ben Folds.
