"The Handmaiden" Oct 22, 2020

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

Our 2016 retrospective continues as we attempt to cover a few missing podcast reviews which we did not complete the year the site launched. This will culminate in NBP Film Community Awards and awards voted on by the staff towards the end of October. Next up is our review of "The Handmaiden" written and directed by Park Chan-wook ("Oldboy"). One of the most acclaimed films of 2016 and unjustly overlooked to be South Korea's Oscar submission for the Best International Feature Film category that year, the film has endured to become a modern classic in the eyes of many cinephiles. Do we agree? Joining me to discuss I have Nicole Ackman, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Patreon guest Jay Ledbetter. Take a listen below and let us know what you think. Also check out our previous 2016 reviews of "20th Century Women," "Paterson," "Captain Fantastic" & "Hail, Caesar!" Thanks!

Show notes

In what has been undoubtedly the oddest Tony season of our lifetimes, the 74th annual Tony Award nominations were announced this past Friday for the 2019-2020 Broadway season. Due to the pandemic, the selection was somewhat limited which led to more than a few surprising choices and even exclusions. The ceremony will be held virtually later this year (date currently unspecified) and we will be back for our winner predictions then with another free episode. Until then, take a listen down below to hear from myself, Nicole Ackman, Dan Bayer, Casey Lee Clark, Cody Dericks & Lauren LaMagna on this free full-length episode.

Interview With "Shithouse" Director, Writer, Producer, Editor & Star, Cooper Raiff Oct 16, 2020

Show notes

There's always excitement in the air when you feel like you're watching the emergence of a new creative talent on the scene and that's exactly how I felt with Cooper Raiff's directorial debut "Shithouse," which won the Grand Jury prize at this year's South By Southwest for Best Narrative feature. Conducting the duties as star, writer, director, producer and editor on the film, Cooper certainly had his hands full on this film and he was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking to us about that, what it was like working with Dylan Gelula, getting Jay Duplass on board early and more! Take a listen below and be sure to check out the film, available now!

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL EPISODE. Please check out the full episode on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

Next Best Adaptation is back where we review the source material of the year's potential Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar contenders. Last time we were here we looked at "Rebecca" by Daphne Du Maurier and "Death On The Nile" by Agatha Christie. Now, we are looking at "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir Of A Family And Culture In Crisis" by J.D. Vance. We recorded this podcast over the summer but the trailer for the film adaptation by Ron Howard and starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close was unveiled by Netflix today and we figured now was the right time to release this podcast. Joining me for this podcast discussion into the themes, characters and more controversial political viewpoints of this memoir, I have Michael Schwartz & Cody Dericks.
