Show notes

For this week's main review, I am joined by Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Daniel Howat & Tom O'Brien. This week we're discussing the latest film from Disney/Pixar now streaming on Disney+, "Soul." Directed by Academy Award winner Pete Docter ("Up" & "Inside Out") and the first Pixar film featuring a Black lead, the animated film has been greatly anticipated since its premiere from this year's Cannes Film Festival was delayed. Working with complex themes, a talented voice cast, the composing talents of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, what did we think of the overall film? What do we think of its Oscar potential? And how does it compare to the other films Pixar has given us before? Tune in below to find out. Enjoy!

We're back for another show of television talk. Two months ago, we announced that we were launching a new format for Next Best Series. Much like Next Best Theatre, members of the NBP team get together once a month to talk about what television shows they're currently watching or re-watching. This month's show we''re discussing hit shows such as Netflix's "The Crown” and Steve McQueen's "Small Axe" anthology on Prime Video (and the debate of TV vs. film that the series has sparked amongst cinephiles). We also recap some of our favorite television shows of 2020 as we say goodbye to this landmark year in television history. Joining me for this episode we have Michael Schwartz & Ryan C. Showers. We encourage everyone to give us feedback on this new format and let us know what you think. Enjoy!

"Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" Dec 19, 2020

Show notes

For this week's main review, I am joined by Amanda Spears, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Ryan C. Showers. This week we're discussing the latest film on Netflix, which is another stage to screen adaptation from Tony Award winning playwright August Wilson ("Fences") titled "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. Already a big Oscar contender, the film was suddenly thrusted into the spotlight earlier this year with the tragic passing of one of its stars, Chadwick Boseman. With this being his last on-screen role, he leaves behind an iconic legacy which we discuss, along with the other tremendous performances from this ensemble, the direction by George C. Wolfe, how well the film overcomes its stage trappings and more. Thank you and enjoy!

Interview With "Wolfwalkers" Directors Tomm Moore & Ross Stewart Dec 14, 2020

Show notes

Tomm Moore has been crafting some of the best animated films of the last decade including "The Secret of Kells" and "Song Of The Sea." Now, teaming up with Ross Stewart, the two's latest film "Wolfwalkers," which had its premiere at this year's Toronto International Film Festival and is currently playing on AppleTV+, is taking the animation world by storm. Already hailed as one of the best animated films of the year (and one of the year's best films in general), the film is a gorgeously animated and beautifully told Celtic story that is sure to win over even the hardest of cynics out there. Moore and Stewart were kind enough to talk with us for a few minutes about the film's story, hidden easter eggs, whether they intended for Bill Goodfellowe (voiced by Sean Bean) to come across as Ned Stark (from "Game Of Thrones") in animated form and much more! Take a listen down below and enjoy!
