Interview With "Goodnight Mommy" Director, Matt Sobel Sep 19, 2022

Show notes

"Goodnight Mommy" is a remake of the 2014 Austrian horror film of the same name and stars Naomi Watts in the lead role. The film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Director Matt Sobel was kind enough to spend a few moments talking with us about his work on the film, including how he came on board the project, working with Naomi Watts, and what it was like having to live up to the original film and make it his own. We hope you will check out the film and take a listen down below. Enjoy, and thank you!

Together we're reviewing the latest film from Gina Prince-Bythewood, "The Woman King," starring Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim & John Boyega. A historical action epic set in Africa featuring strong, powerful, Black women in the lead roles is something you do not see coming out of the Hollywood studio system every day. Interview With "See How They Run" Director, Tom George Sep 16, 2022

Show notes

"See How They Run" is one of the more impressive directorial debuts from 2022. Director Tom George and screenwriter Mark Chappell are a match made in heaven as they take the "Whodunnit" genre and flip it on its head with a tribute to the work of Agatha Christie that is a deceptively modern, meta, and vastly entertaining murder mystery in its own right. Tom was kind enough to spend some time talking with me about his work on the film, working with the cast, crafting a compelling murder mystery in 2022, and more. Please take a listen down below and enjoy!

Director and co-writer Jullian Higgins was kind enough to spend some time talking with me about the film's themes, working with Thandiwe, and more. We hope you will check out the film, which is opening in theaters this weekend, and take a listen down below. Thank you, and enjoy!

Interview With "Speak No Evil" Director/Writer, Christian Tafdrup Sep 14, 2022

Show notes

"Speak No Evil" had its world premiere, digitally, at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it shocked and terrified audiences with its dark humor, which grows more sinister and more threatening until the cringe comedy is completely erased, and all that is left is stomach-churning horror. One of the stand-out films from the festival, it's been playing in limited release in New York and Los Angeles but will now be available to stream on Shudder starting September 16th. Director and writer Christian Tafdrup was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about the film (both without spoilers and with indicated spoilers for those who do not wish to know where this twisted film goes). We hope you will check out the film (if you can handle it) and take a listen down below. Enjoy, and thank you!

"Barbarian" Sep 10, 2022

Show notes

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Dan Bayer, and together we do our best to avoid spoilers and talk about one of the best horror films of the year, Zach Cregger's "Barbarian" starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård & Justin Long. Go into this one as blind as humanly possible, then come back and listen to our review, which we recorded minutes after watching it in the theater. We hope you enjoy it. Thank you!

Episode 310 - The 2022 Venice & Telluride Film Festivals & Final TIFF Preview Sep 06, 2022

Show notes

For Episode 310, I am joined by Tom O'Brien, Dan Bayer, and guest Jorge Don Birnham. This is an interesting podcast because this is a series of conversations conducted over the Labor Day weekend while I was at the Telluride Film Festival with Jorge. He and I bookend the podcast with our drives to and coming from Telluride. In between, I talk with Tom on two separate occasions about his experience at the Venice Film Festival and chat one last time with Dan about what we're looking forward to seeing at the Toronto International Film Festival this week. Apologies for the audio quality, as I did not have my microphone for any of these conversations, but I hope you enjoy them either way. Thank you!

Show notes

"Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received good notices for Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown's satirical performances as a husband and wife team running a modern-day evangelical church. The two of them were kind enough to spend a few minutes chatting with us, followed by another brief conversation with the film's director, writer, and producer, Adamma Ebo, and her co-producer (and sister) Adanne Ebo. We hope you take a listen down below and check out the film, now playing in theaters and streaming on Peacock from Focus Features. Thank you, and enjoy!
